Stephenie Meyer Hates it When you Steal From Her

So, it turns out that you really have to trust someone with the really important things in your life.  Unfortunatly, Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilightseries, found that out recently.  She gave out a few different copies of her current project to a few people, that she thought she could trust, to see what they thought. One of them thought it was so good that they posted it on the internet.  Now that rabid fans have gotten a hold of this leakage, she feels that she cannot finish what she has started.

This latest project was titled Midnight Sun.  It is an alternate version of the Twilight book, from the character Edward’s perspective.  For those fans who love the series, this is a dream come true.  It is well documented that I have read the first book in the Twilight series, and I feel that this new book is a very smart way to keep the interest in the world of Twilight.  One of my favorite authors, Orson Scott Card, did the same thing with his Ender series with Enders Shadow.  It just sends fans into a frenzy.

But here is where the problem lies.  On her website, stepheniemeyer.com, she addresses the issue of her stealing friend.  She has decided to post the yet unedited 260+ pages of the new book.  However, she states that she doesn’t think that she will finish the book:

So where does this leave Midnight Sun? My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn’t like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything.

….I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.

Yes,  Stephenie did the right thing by posting her favorite version of the story so far.  But I have lost a little respect for the lady.  I understand the artist type, where the art is everything and if anything compromises the art they quit.  I hate that, I just want to grab her ears and scream in her face: “Stop being a BABY!!”.  I think she should take this set back and make the story just to stick it to the thief.  This is her oppertunity to show her fans what they mean to her.  If she truly appreciates her fans like she says she does, then this wouldn’t stop her from finishing her story.  From this experiance she should that there are a very limited amount of people that you can trust with stuff like that.

Maybe I am being overly critical, but I think she is giving up too easily.  For those of you who want to read what Stephenie has posted then CLICK HERE.  I would love to hear what you think about this situation.  Let me know what you think, until then…

McMurphy Out!

I really don’t understand why she’s surprised. Twilight is the new Harry Potter right now. Of course someone would put it on the internet!! If you don’t want your stuff all over the internet before you’re ready, don’t give it out.
And of course I’m going to read it…..

Soooooooo…a writer makes the poor decision of who to entrust her work in progress with. And instead of blaming herself for the lapse in judgement or her friend for being a thief – and consequently suing/prosecuting the “friend” for theft…she decides to punish her fans by deciding to indefinitely postpone/cancel the book? Newsflash, lady. Your fans didn’t screw you over, your friend did – and with the blessing of your own incompetence.

Wow… what a bunch of ungrateful, disloyal assholes you all are.

You think that she owes you something because your her fans? Get this: you are *utterly* inconsequential; you just like her work.

“I understand the artist type”… no, you can’t. You can’t because you’re spoilt, greedy children without an ounce of compassion, screaming and stamping to be spoonfed more of what she has the talent to write and you don’t.

If you like her previous work then show some support for her now that she’s been screwed over. That would be being a “fan”.

Oh… and before you write this off as the indignation of a die-hard reader of hers, I’m not. Never heard of her before. Just thought I’d tell you what I think of your attitudes.

At first I felt the same exact way as the author of this thread. But some good points have been showed to me. I think Stephenie wanted this to happen. She never intended to publish Midnight Sun, this was her cop out.

    Think about it.

Before Breaking Dawn when asked about Midnight sun, there are many interviews where she says Midnight Sun wouldn’t be written for a long time, because after Breaking Dawn was released she planned to write other things. It was on the back burner.
She also mentioned that even if she DID finish Midnight Sun, she might end up just posting the whole book on her website (hm,…just like what shes done)

Of course though, after Breaking Dawn was released her fans went crazy (me included of course) and wanted her to immediately finish Midnight Sun for us. The pressure was on and i just think she didn’t even want to really write Midnight Sun. So now that its been leaked, it gives her the perfect opportunity to put it on “hold indefinitely”
How it got leaked is very sketchy. She gave it to only close friends (who probably had drafts of Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn…which means why would they want to leak Midnight Sun now when they’ve had plenty of time to do that before?) On her website at the end of the questions that were asked the most about Breaking Dawn, is asking what she will do next. NO mention of Midnight sun. In fact she says she wants to get away from the Twilight world.

Either way, i am a little upset. Because A. she is either lying to us about what really happened and this is just her way of not having to finish Midnight sun.
    or
    B. The way she actually handled the situation was bad. Like the author said, everyone would still buy Midnight Sun. Music Artist’s unreleased songs get put on the internet all the time, but you don’t see them throwing away their whole album and saying “fuck it then we don’t put it out!”

I think it comes down to , she doesn’t have the drive to write the book right now. Well fine, but don’t lie to the world. I think her fans would be a lot more understanding if she were just honest and said “hey look, i’ve just spent years of my life writing these books, I’m done for now!”

I love all the TWILIGHT books and just want her to write more! it’s to bad her book is out unfinished. I am just hoping that she will finish it. I know I will be the first to go out and buy it. Just one more thing if Stephanie is reading this PLEASE keep writing about Bella, Edward and Jacob! If you write I will read, we all will read.

Inspiration and creativity are strange things. You can't just wake up one morning and say, "Hey, I think I'll write a super block-buster hit song about trees!" I mean, you can, and if you are lucky something may come of that intention. Especially if you are already a good song writer. But really, many things have to fall into place that are waaaaaaaaaaaay out of your total control. Books are like that too. Writing reflects inner dynamics of the author. If the author is upset or thinking weird, the writing will be effected greatly. Betrayal by a friend is a bummer. I'd move on to something else for a while too. Get my mind off the betrayal and maybe come back later, if ever.

Give the gal a break folks!

    Lighten up!

    :-)

    LOL

ad ogni modo penso che sia una persona davvero speciale ….
mi chiedo se in lei non ci sia qualcosa di …. vampiresco ….
    ihihihih
    naturalmente scherzo.

  11. jessica on July 9th, 09

    arrivederci … Jessica
