UPDATE: Will Smith is Not Captain America? Well, thats what I heard!

UPDATE:
——————————–
AICN got word from multiple sources at Marvel That Derek Luke is full of shit. Will Smith will not be playing Captain America. Marvel never even considered him for the role. So there ya have it.
——————————————————
Geeks everywhere went crazy when they saw Captain America’s shield in the background of Iron Man. Then when they announced a Captain America movie was going to be developed geeks went ape shit! Then the casting rumors started flying all over the place like with Leonardo DiCaprio or Brad Pitt sporting the red, white and blue costume. I would have never thought of casting Will Smith in the role though. So when Derek Luke let this little nugget of information out, I was quite surprised. During an interview for ‘Miracle at St. Anna’ with MTV he said this:
“I heard they offered Will Smith ‘Captain America,’” said Luke, adding that the intriguing casting rumor “just shows you how times have changed.”
You know when I think about Will Smith playing Captain America I can see it. I think he could pull it off. I wouldn’t go as far to say he is perfect for the role, but, If they really decide to go the Will Smith route I’ll stand behind it. He is the best choice that has been mentioned so far. If this casting rumor turns out to be true, I will be very surprised. As you know the Captain America we all grew up with was a white guy. I am curious what the response will be regarding this casting rumor. This wont be the first time Marvel has changed a character from white to black. Look at Nick Fury.
I guess if this is true or false information we will know soon enough.

Please no. I’d rather see Johnny Depp as Cap than Will ($cientology) Smith.
Definitely no. I mean it’d be ok if he was African American, but Will Smith? Definitely not. I don’t want Cap beat boxing, thank you.
while i think will smith is a good actor and i like things he’s in…he’s not captain america. Falcon, yeah sure, i’ll take that one. but not Cap
I’m not sure if it’s part of the regular Marvel universe (or the Ultimates universe, for that matter), but there was a mini-series about the first successful recipient of the Super Soldier formula – an African-American. Steve Rogers may not have even been the second successful recipient.
That said, I highly doubt a black man would have been accepted by the government, much less the general public, as an acceptable American icon when Captain America first hit the battlefield. Maybe Cap’s sidekick Bucky Barnes could be African-American in the film.
Maybe Will Smith can play the Winter Soldier – the presumed dead Bucky – in a sequel to the first Captain America film. Smith as a ruthless killer would be an interesting role for him. (I thought Tom Cruise* played an excellent villain in Michael Mann’s COLLATERAL.)
I went to see TRAITOR** tonight, which I enjoyed quite a bit. Don Cheadle and Guy Pearce are both great actors. I think Cheadle would make an excellent T’Challa, King of Wakanda, aka Black Panther.
But all throughout the movie I kept trying to think which Marvel superhero Pearce could play. How about Steve Rogers, aka Captain America?
He did turn down DAREDEVIL*** though. And now wants to work with Christopher Nolan again (they did MEMENTO together), and is interested in being in the next Batman film. (Which would be cool!) Maybe Pearce is a DC man, and wouldn’t want to do a Marvel film.
* (Of course, Tom Cruise would make a great villain. He’s certifiable! And he scares me. Seriously.
But I did enjoy his role in TROPIC THUNDER, which softened his image for everyone for at least 107 minutes.)
** (Holy carp! I knew “a” Steve Martin wrote the story for TRAITOR, but I didn’t know until now that it was “the” Steve Martin; i.e. the guy best known for his comedy work.)
*** (DAREDEVIL would have been fine if the studio hadn’t cut out practically all of the Matt Murdock footage – i.e. Daredevil’s civilian life as a lawyer – ruining the flow of the film.)
please keep captain america the way he is. Quit changing the characters we grew up with. If you want more african american comic book characters then make some. Or they could just make a comic book movie about a black super hero like the black panther. They already tried to give will smith the superman role and he was smart enough to turn it down so hopefully he will turn this one down if they offer him the job.
I think will smith is a great actor, but he is no Captain America. I think he would be great as Black Panther, he has the physique and he is black. If Marvel keeps with the comics there is no way the cap would all of a sudden end up black. Also if the rumor is true that the Captain America movie will be set in WW II then there would be no way that “Cap” would have been black. Look at history Units in the military were segregated during WWII. It would just not be as believable. Now if after the first movie and Cap is assinated like in the comic then maybe they could find someone else “Will Smith” that could handle the serum. Just a thought. And as Will Smith playing “Bucky”, same situation as listed above it just wouldn’t happen.
hay will i am a i love your moves
no will smith please , but marvel needs to green light the luke cage movie.
