Nearing Twilight: A Rant by Fangirl Montana Wildhack

Ok.So.
This year seems to be a year chalk full of highly anticipated movies. There was The Dark Knight, Quantum of Solace, Iron Man, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull…you get the point. This Friday, yet another one of these films comes to a screen near you. Of course I’m talking about Twilight.
Of course, I’m going to go see it. I have to. I have no choice. But I will admit, I do so with less anticipation than the other movies I’ve listed- Indiana Jones being the exception. There is always trepidation when going to see a movie that has been made from a book, especially with the success of LOTR and the Harry Potter movies. But honestly, I’m not super concerned about that with Twilight. Say what you’d like about the book, it doesn’t seem to be a tough book to turn into a movie. I’m a lover of books and Twilight was ultimately a fun read. It was cotton candy. Light and fluffy. Nothing too deep or complex going on in this book. Heck- I read it on a plane, from cover to cover, in about 9 hours. I certainly couldn’t do that with, say, Interview with a Vampire, right? But really, it’s ok that it’s cotton candy. Not every book needs to be deep and thought provoking. And ultimately, this makes the director and producer’s job way way easier. Unlike Peter Jackson, Catherine Hardwicke does not have a complex world to create. Unlike Neil Jordon, director of Interview with a Vampire, Hardwicke doesn’t have to deal with characters struggling with inner demons, trying to find their place in this world. Really, the only way that they, the Twilight filmmakers, can mess up is if they don’t follow the book and if they screw the pooch in their casting choices.
There has been much debate over the casting choices, but I’m going to reserve judgment until I’ve seen the movie.
So I go to the theatre this Friday expecting hot vampire boys and a cheesy teenage love story. As long as that happens, I think I’ll be happy.

Good or bad, this thing is gonna rake in the cash. Diehard fans of the book are gonna see it multiple times. To me going by the previews it looks pretty cheesy. Even the action… I can almost see the wires they are hanging from haha. But yea I’ll see it too.
Well just by reading this you can tell its not written by Dr. Vankman. Any and every girl who has read this book will be seeing this movie if not once, more then once. This director was smart to pick a book that had a great fan bass. Cause its not going to be Iron Man But in a way it will be, it will be the girly girl type. In stead of waiting two hours for one of the guy no romance action movie for once it is a women’s turn action with romance in one, with nice looking guys. We can’t beat that! I know that when I first saw the guy playing Edward, I thought he wasn’t as good looking as I read. As time went on and I saw him more and more he is finally fits the part. Women from all ages will be see this movie. And I mean all ages. Stephenie Meyer has won the hearts of so many women. She is truly a great writer. I will be looking forward to see what you think of this movie Dr. Venkman.
Actually, I’m a girl, I read the book, and I am not going to see the movie. Didn’t really like the book. Can see the appeal, but I’ve read better fanfiction.
But its going to make a ridiculous amount of money, and it will be even longer before I can escape the raving throngs of Twilight mania.
I agree, though. Totally easy film to make.
OK. I totally agree with you. It was totally cotton candy, but it was addictive cotton candy and I read all four books in about 1 month (to me the series kinda sucks until the 3rd book). I kinda hated that I was even reading it, but once I started, I HAD to know the end (curiosity and all that…). And, like you, I feel like I have to see the movie. But I’m not expecting much.
So thank you for understanding and acknowledging that not everyone who sees TWILIGHT will be 15-years old and screaming in a decibel only acceptable for bats every time something happens in the movie.
Sorry, you people are the first that I have heard that have read that didn’t like the books. For me I couldn’t put the books down. I agree with Ker. It was a fun book.
What kind of girls are you that don’t like reading a love story that was well written? Probably ones that Voted NO on Prop 8 (Lol, Just kidding) But I am a Lover of the book and I can’t belive GeekTyrant would put crappy writing like this on there website. All their stuff is good. Fangirl I am NOT your fan.
Yah, I hope that it’s two diffrent Jennifer’s. But I agree with them. I loved the Books and me and a big group of friends will be at the midnight show. We will be lining up eairly. I won’t be expecting much of the movie. But I am a Fan!
jennifer-
so- i’m wondering where in my rant you read that i claimed twilight wasn’t well written? where did i say it wasn’t a good book?
just sayin’- i never did. i liked it. it was fun to read.
that’s all.
I didn’t say you said that it was to Ghostie. But your writing isn’t what I would expect GeekTyrant to put up. Sorry still not a fan.
HAHAHA! i think its great all the catty comments. i think that this is the most posts any rant has had on here.
i’m here to submit my 2 cents:
before i do that may i just say bravo to Montana on your first time rant.
so i too was a little hesitant about seeing this book become a movie. one because the casting wasn’t well thought of. I do think they could’ve found a hotter bella and just from watching the trailers her acting looks lifeless. i shouldn’t be so unfair on judging the acting because after all it is just trailers i’ve seen, but you would think they would put their best on the trailers…. i dunnoo..
and Edward? come on. again, i wanted a more brooding character. to me he will always be the first dude to be killed by the avada kadavara curse in effing harry potter. his acting was mediocre then but hopefully he can at least pull off the sex appeal in this movie.
i’m just a little nervous they are gonna trash the book. I had heard rumors that they had to re shoot some scenes and add a couple things because they didn’t anticipate the book blowing up like it did. so they had to have the movie live up to the hype and anticipation.
by the way i enjoyed the book. nothing like a little mindless reading to tickle my fancy.
all in all this isn’t one of my top movies that i’ve been looking forward to watching. lets face it. If you’re talking good reads turned into good movies, Watchmen is gonna kick the crap out of Twilight both in reads and movies. I can’t wait for that to come out.
i like all the rant backs on here. keeps it spicy
I would like to start by saying that i have seen the movie ONCE out of pure curiousity and I am a girl. I’ve read all four books before the hype of the movie and still did NOT give in to these ‘gods’ that Meyer portrays within the Cullen family. This series is repetative and contradicting at the same time. There are no surprises, just a vey long wait (like in book four). Meyer’s use of sexual tension between characters is more of a teenage lust scenario instead of an actual love story. Every teenager knows that there is a difference between lust and love, this series blurs those lines. This series will also renew the vampire hype, but with the wrong presentation. Vampires are feared creatures, much like Vlad the impaler. They are not meant to sparkle in the sunight or become ‘vegitarians’. That’s the point to a vampire, not an literal ‘dream come true’.
