The Resident Goth Reviews “Repo: The Genetic Opera”

I first heard about this movie about a year ago. I have been a huge fan of the band Skinny Puppy for a few years now, and sometime last year I heard that Nivek Ogre (lead singer of Skinny Puppy), was going to be in a SciFi/Gothic themed musical, and I realized….I have to see this. The story revolves around a genetics company that sends out a Repo man if you fall behind on payment of your new liver, heart, etc.
All I have to say is damn this movie was cool!!!!

I am honestly not a big fan of musicals, except for the occasional Tim Burton film, but I am a huge fan of Scifi, especially with those rare gems that are a kin to cyber-punk. The story goes like this:

In the year 2056 – the not so distant future – an epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Out of the tragedy, a savior emerges: GeneCo, a biotech company that offers organ transplants, for a price. Those who miss their payments are scheduled for repossession and hunted by villainous Repo Men. In a world where surgery addicts are hooked on painkilling drugs and murder is sanctioned by law, a sheltered young girl searches for the cure to her own rare disease as well as information about her family’s mysterious history. After being sucked into the haunting world of GeneCo, she is unable to turn back, as all of her questions will be answered at the wildly anticipated spectacular event: The Genetic Opera

The music is solid. The visuals are amazing. And the story is original. the whole thing was written by Darren Smith and Terrence Zdunich. Zdunich also shows up in the film as a narrator-esque character known as The Graverobber. the movie stars Anthony Stewart Head as single father with a troubled past and Alexa Vega as his daughter who suffers from a strange genetic blood disease. Paul Sorvino plays the evil CEO of Geneco with Paris Hilton, Nivek Ogre, and Bill Moselely as his children. Singer Sarah Brightman shows up as, you guessed it, a singer by the name of Blind Mag.

The movie was great. I will even go as far as saying that this is the Rocky Horror Picture Show of the current generation. This will be a cult classic. Release is limited but do yourself a favor and go see it if it is playing near you.

I am still on the fence about seeing this movie, its never coming to my city so I will have to buy the DVD and Im not sure I want to comit myself to owning it if it ends up sucking. Ive found lots of clips of it on youtube (most of which look really good) and Ive read lots of reviews (which range from “best movie ever” to “oh god it was practically unwatchable”) and Im still not entirely sure if Ill like it. What I can say though: “mark it up” and “zydrate anatomy” are awesome songs.

Just wanted to let you and your readers know that the concept for this was originally created for the stage by Terrance Zdunich and Darren Smith. It was then that Darren Lynn Bousman directed one of the stage runs that he got involved and he helped create it into the movie that is Repo! The Genetic Opera. In the movie, Darren Smith is the opera director during the Testify scene.

I didn't know it was Paris Hilton until the credits rolled. I thought they had picked an actress that looked like Paris Hilton, in order to mock her with the Amber Sweet role.

Frankly, I thought Paris playing herself in a movie was apropo.
