Gore Verbinski Developing a movie about the role-playing world

Some people may find this type of movie pretty depressing. I myself don’t play online role-playing games but I know people that do, people that are addicted to it and have lost jobs, spouses, and family over it.

Gore Verbinski and Universal Pictures has nabbed the rights to a article that was featured in The Wall Street Journal that will be used as the basis for the movie. It will be about the online fantasy role-playing world and how it impacts peoples real lives. Variety reports:

Verbinski will develop the film as a directing vehicle; Steven Knight (”Eastern Promises”) will pen the script.

The article by Alexandra Alter focuses on a married man who spends as many as 20 hours a day on a computer, existing through an avatar who is a thriving, musclebound entrepreneur. In reality, he is a diabetic, chain-smoking 53-year-old.

Like I said this could be a pretty depressing movie. I recently read an article about a guy that plays World of War Craft and owns over 30 accounts and plays for all his characters at the same time on a set up he has will over 30 monitors. It cost him over $10,000 a month to do this.

I am sure some people have it under control, but the ones that don’t would make for a really interesting documentary, but I guess they are going strait to making the movie. It just seems like a whole new and interesting world that not many people really know about. What do you think of all this?

Seems like an interesting premise but pretty easy to screw up and make it boring.

Hey Doc, I think it sounds interesting. I have some friends that are way into that as well and it is extremely depressing just to think about how boring their lives are.
