Remake Alert! Are you ready for this? ‘The Crow’

Mr. Blacks gonna be pissed! But its true, the trades are reporting that The Crow, which starred Brandon Lee who was one of those actors that lost his life prematurely on the set of the film, is being remade by Stephen Norrington. This really sucks. First of all this is another movie that does not need to be re-made. Second of all is it just me or does it seem like this is kind of a dishonor to the memory of Brandon Lee? Here are the details:

Stephen Norrington has signed on to write and direct a reinvention of “The Crow,” based on the comic created by James O’Barr.

Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Media is negotiating with producer Ed Pressman to acquire the film franchise and finance the film.

Pressman produced the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed screen transfer, in which rock musician Eric Draven is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs, and returns from the dead one year later to exact vengeance. Though the original became a gothic-style hit that grossed nearly $100 million worldwide, it is primarily remembered for a tragic accident in which star Brandon Lee was killed during filming.

For Norrington, “The Crow” deal marks the end of a long screen sabbatical. After making his breakthrough with the Marvel Comics hero “Blade,” Norrington took on a big-budget comic transfer with “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.” Neither the director nor his star, Sean Connery, has made a film since.

Norrington said he felt demoralized by that experience, and the accomplished sculptor spent the next five years writing and working on his art. He made a deal to direct “Clash of the Titans” for Warner Bros., but left the project, he said, because he was “unable to excite Warner Bros. with my take, or influence the screenplay to any comfortable extent.” That pic goes into production early next year with Louis Leterrier at the helm.

Norrington resolved to focus on independent projects, and sparked to an approach on “The Crow” from Relativity production chief Tucker Tooley and Pressman. Norrington had a relationship with Pressman when they came close to making “Mutant Chronicles” several years ago. Both embraced Norrington’s vision of the antihero, which Norrington said will be different than the film Proyas made.

“Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style,”

I am not a big fan of any films that Norrington has made. The guy hasn’t made a movie since the crapfest ‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’. I am so glad he didn’t end up directing ‘Clash of the Titans’! He would have killed it. So what do you think about this Crow remake business?

i am against this. and i will fight to death to keep this from happening!
the crow is an amazing film. it is true and brilliant and the idea that someone thinks they could improve on that film just boggles my mind. seriously i’m having a hard time typing cuz i’m just shaking with anger!!!
yes- it is true- the crow franchise is fraught with horrible spin offs and sequels. every other “crow” movie has sucked. big time. but the original- it’s one of my top ten movies of all time. everything about it was awesome.
and who does this norrington guy think he is???
i agree dr.- his movies blow. and i can’t think, for a moment, about what he would do to this film.
    ugh.
i need to go puke now.
    i am totally disgusted.
    and my day is ruined.

I challenge you Venkman, the next time you get a heads up about a ‘retarded remake’ your post can not contain the word ‘Remake’. Not once, give it a shot ;) flex those literary muscles and see what you can come up with.

On the topic of this… well… you know how i feel about ‘remakes’ and that certainly includes this movie. Though… not a big fan of the original.

  3. Brandon's Lament on December 15th, 08

This stands as a testament to the utter stupidity of Hollywood and the senselessness of what they do. These people need to be dragged through the streets and hung by a post as a testament for all to know WHAT NOT TO DO!!!

What the fuck kind of Shit is that. How dare they even consider doing a remake of this film. HOLLYWOOD get off your lazy ass and produce something original for a change.

I urge everyone out there to find a way to stop this from happening before it happens. This is the last fucking straw!

i agree with Brandon’s lament. aren’t remakes kind of like buying a rolex on a market??

    Add me into the mix.
I LOVE this movie. I’ve watched it a couple dozen times. It still stands up. Brandon’s role of the ravaged and vengeful Draven was some of the best acting I’ve ever seen out of him or anyone else in this type of role. He really nailed it.

Can’t Hollyweird come up with an ORIGINAL idea? Do they have to keep redoing everything! It’s exciting when they bring comics to live–to bring that macabre, sometimes too idealized to believe sentiments to screen and try to make it work–but don’t mess with something like the Crow.

Go ahead and rework the sequels. They weren’t worth anything compared to the first one.

The day I see another crow film that surpasses the late Brandon Lee’s performance is the day Brandon Lee will tell me how I wasted my time watching his greatest achievement in life.

    Forever fan

I don’t know, I think they should throw a ton of money at this project…

So that when it bombs this douche bag will never work again.

It makes my skin crawl to think that anyone would even consider such a move. I know it will blow and I personally think the original was so good in so many ways – even the setting of Detroit on devils night (a true phenomenon) was put to screen so perfectly that I find it hard to believe that any garbage remake could ever take away from the original. It will only make the producers and directors look bad who even thought about trying to re-create or alter the story in their own lame way.

Unless this was a SinCity-like movie based on “The Crow Author’s Edition” (see http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/thecrow/ ) I would hate a remake was made

  9. xxxero on January 6th, 09

is any wonder he hasn’t made a movie since then? look at the drivel he has put out so far! it seems to me, that this Norrington guy has not an original bone in his body, much like the rest of hollywood.
he, and everyone who approved this blasphemy, should be stabbed in the eyes, then shot.

  10. Kira on January 14th, 09

Oh my GOSH! What is this guy THINKING?!?! I’d be up to watching the movie if it was remade, but they better get one helluva’ cast. But I’d probably burst out crying cuz’ they are trying to remake The Crow. That’s just sad, and this Norrington-guy, whatever his name is, is just….ughh *bleep* *punches bag, and stomps up stairs*

instead of remaking the origiinal which needs no remake why dont they make a new one, without a subtitle, and make us forget that city of angels was mediocre, salvation was garbage, wicked prayer was a travesty and the tv show was laughable.

if they would take five minutes before banging out a script they think is amazing and then pissing on o’barr’s origial work and idea, they might come up with a movie for theatres and not a straight-to-video suckfest.

why not make a movie based more on one of the comics, there were plenty of good stories, but all of them seemed to be f’ed in the a by the writers.

make a movie based on the original novel’s look and some new characters and good actors and big budget and call it something else and we’ll f’n talk.

other than that, dont piss on o’barr’s legacy and and brandon lee’s most amazing work by “remaking” it.

  12. Mr. Black on January 15th, 09

Agree 100% THNX. They should do a movie on The Crow: Dead Time. James O’barr actually wrote the original treatment for it. The only other Crow story he wrote besides the original.

If not that then The Crow: Flesh and Blood.

Just don’t remake a perfect movie.
