I’d like to know what the casting director was thinking when he cast Robert Downey, Jr. as Holmes.
Was it, “The long, thin, aquiline, clean-cut, gentleman Holmes is too boring. Let’s make him a semi-short, square, dull, scruffy sort to apeal to the modern fangirl,”?

I believe I’ve read that this was based on a graphic novel, but…This film is going to make things harder on real Sherlockians. I’ll have to explain to everyone who asks me about it who the real Holmes is…

Odd that they cast someone that is at least a bit closer to the original Watson, rather than a fat bungler. He could stand to be a bit more athletic, though, being a former rugby player.

I have some copies of the canon to spare, perhaps I should send them to various members of the film crew and to the person that made the graphic novel in the first place…XD

I expect the choice of Robert Downey Jr. had to do with him being hot at the box office right now due to Iron Man. If Iron Man had not been such a success, perhaps they would have tried for Johnny Depp?

I love RDJ’s work, and I think he has the acting skills to potray Holmes, but physically he is wrong. I think a physical likeness is important when portraying a character who’s physical description is so firmly planted in the public’s mind as Holmes’. If they were going to pick a vertically challenged actor who is a box office draw, I think, from a physical standpoint, Depp would have been a better choice due to his finer build and sharp features.

As a Brit I struggle with Downey's mock English accent. It doesn't really matter I suppose, but it's distracting.
