Ralph Macchio talks about new Karate Kid movie

There are a lot of people out there who are not happy with Will and Jaden Smith remaking the 1980’s classic hit ‘The Karate Kid’, I myself think it is a bad idea. I just don’t see a better movie coming out of this. The original movie is iconic and has a huge following of people that grew up with it, this new movie is destined to get slammed with haters. But what does the original Karate kid Ralph Macchio has to say on the matter? MTV recently caught with him and asked him about Jackie Chan taking on the role of Mr. Miyagi.
“I don’t know,” sighed the now 47-year-old star, in town to promote his Slamdance flick “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead.” “I think Jackie Chan, we all assumed that’s where they were going to go – unless they were thinking of just casting an unknown. The thing is whether Jackie Chan gives you Jackie Chan, or if Jackie Chan does a, you know, real stretch to the character,”
As Ralph began to reminisce about the good ol’ days he talked about what it was like when Pat Morita was cast as Mr. Miyagi:
“You know, the great thing about Pat Morita is he played [serious when he had to]. He was Arnold from ‘Happy Days’! We said the same thing [when he was cast]: ‘Oh, this guy isn’t going to be [dramatic enough], They wanted like, Toshiro Mifune, or some great actor, And Pat Morita comes in and just embodies this character. He had the humor, he had the comedic chops, but he had the richness of what the human part of that character needed; which is what made it such a great performance.”
In this new Karate Kid movie they are giving the character Mr. Miyagi a overhaul by changing his nationality from Japanese to Chinese and film parts of the film in China as well. It is Also rumored that Jaden Smith refuses to do the classic crane-kick. I think this is going to be a really hard movie to sell to people. Ralph goes on to say:
“I think Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, with a good script, and all the moons in alignment? It could be another big fat hit,”
Do you think it will be a hit? And do you think Ralph Macchio will do a cameo?

Well, first of all they’ll have to change the title to The Kung Fu Kid. Karate isn’t Chinese.
ralph macchio is still alive? i thought he died with pogs and mc hammer pants (and Mc hammer)
Ha! Yes! The Kung Fu Kid!
First of all I think they are going to make this new movie into a kids movie for elementary school kids. I’m not saying the original was intended for mature audiences but… I don’t think it should be remade, if there’s going to be another Karate kid movie Ralph Macchio should take over as the new sensei. Keep it with the orignal characters. Or maybe, better yet… leave it alone.
Why is it Hollywood can no longer come up with good ideas for movies. Instead they insist on remaking movies from the recent past and in my opinion they are doing a poor job of it. The karate kid story line and the movies are classics in my opinion and should be left alone. If they need to be remade then they need to be done right, not with a Chinese man taking the place of a Japanese man and not with a young black kid taking the place of an Italian boy from new york. The fact he wont do the crane kick is just adding insult to injury.
What A disgrace to the original Karate Kid.This movie will flop.
Hasn’t Hollywood heard the old saying: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”?
Weak…this is probably one of the worst remake ideas…why would you even consider to remake a classic such as the Karate Kid? Let it go Smith….pull the plug on this project and focus on the next one. Seriously, do you really think you can capture the same amount of success that the originals did? If it really is going to happen why not include Pat Morita? Jackie Chan has sucked since the Rush Hour trilogies
I agree with Ichiro BobbleHead if they insist on remakin it the should use at least some of the main chacters. Personaly i dont think they should even think about remakin it, its great and there no need to change it
Any movie being remade is inevitable. It’s just a way for a new generation to appreciate the story. And just for the record, Pat Morita is dead.
Sweep the leg!!!!!!!
They should have a new story with Ralph Macchio teaching his own son the a remake, a remake will flop
Talk about “off balance.” Personally, I think they should have stopped at the second movie, the third and fourth (if that one is even worth mentioning) kind of ruined it as it was. Now these Hollywood millionaires have decided that they want a slice of the pie. I say enough is enough. Even if Ralph did play in the new one I still don’t think they could do justice to the first two. The best. If they do make a new one it’ll just be a glorified Karate RPG for rich movie stars with nothing better to do. I’m sure not wasting any money on it.
Big mistake. I will not work! They should of just continued with the story line and used Jayden the one being bullied to seek help by the now trainer Ralph Maccio who has kept Mr Miyagi’s work going. It’s no karate kid without Ralph Maccio. And Jackie Chan. Umm NO! Not in this remake.
Okay, to that person who asked why not include Pat Morita… it’s because he died in 2005. I always thought the logical thing to do would to make Ralph (as Daniel) the Sensei, teaching a kid that reminds him of himself. Or just leave it alone at part 2 (3 and 4 sucked).
Also isn’t Jayden Smith a bit young? He’s 10 now, about to be 11. What’s he going to do, beat up a bunch of kids?
My kids love the original Karate Kid. So the new generations can still appreciate the classics.
I think it's a BIG mistake to remake this movie. It's insulting to everything/everyone about the original.
I think Jackie Chan is okay, but when I heard he would be playing in this remake, I was very disappointed. I was actually disappointed to hear they feel the need to remake this movie at all.
And what's Jayden Smith's problem with not wanting to do the crane kick? Since they feel the need to make this movie, they should just make it it's own thing, and leave the original Karate Kid alone and let it stand as the classic that it is.
I won't be seeing this film in the theaters.
Please don't mess up the Karate kid. Back in the 80's Ralph was such a good natured kid.
I love wil smith, but come on let Ralph's son play Daniel. Please no special effects or flying ropes. There will be no mercy for messing up this movie guys. Somethings are better left untouched. Kinda like Micheal Jackson Bille Jean.
They need to scrap the idea of smiths and chan. the new film should have Ralph as the new teacher
mabye teaching his own kid.
So far all who have heard about this have been giving back negative feed back, which I can't disagree with the Karate Kid movie's have been a particular film I grew up with. Although I doubt they will stick true to the original plot of the story as we allready see its a diferent area, diferent scinerio's. This will be a DVD rental for me, I don't see jackie chan as Mr.Miyagi', but the positive is the fight scene's with jackie chan should be an enjoy to watch. I'm playing this one day by day to see how it develops.
well, why not do a remake, everyone here is saying how bad it will be and all that, yet, everyone will go see and, and no doubt it will make money. forgive me if im wrong, but isnt that what its about. Also, leave the classic alone? i grew up with it and loved it, but get someone of todays generation to shit through and watch it, with 25 year old technology. All the old classics need to be remade, Im a massive Christopher Reeves fan ( RIP ) but it was a great opportunity to watch it again, with todays tech. Give the movie a chance, but dont be out looking for a replica, this is a tribute to a great classic, an different interpretation. Good luck Will
I must agree with Robert. We should give it a chance however i do beleive that with so many changes maybe they should rename the movie and allow Jaden to be the star of his own classic. I am a big fan of Will's and beleive that this film will no doubt have a lot of high tech scenes so i'll watch it and see what happens. Maybe they've replaced the crane kick with something more exciting, we'll have to wait and see.
Don't think a 10 year old would be able to do a better kick than the crane kick, what will it be, baby kick? The only real success I can see from this movie is if they move away from the Karate Kid remake and just do a new movie. "Kung Fu Kid" would be a better choice and go more in the same line as the 3 Ninja kids. Being a Martial artist myself and assistant instuctor in Kung fu, this only says "FAIL" for a remake of Karate kid, especially when everything is Chinese based.
mc hammer is thriving and still making albums fool
haha ralph teaching his own kid? the daft tw@t is a sh!t actor and shouldnt be aloud within 1000 m iles of the new flick!
They can not include Morita as he has passed away.
Actually, the origional meaning of karate is china hand. And if you study okinawan karate history, it does originate from okinawa…. not that i think this movie will go anywhere…
I agree whole heartedly. They should just add to the movie, not do a remake. Ralph teaching his kid or better yet some strange kid ( like Daniel was) and he could still say"father teach"
I think if they are going to go through with it, they should use Macchio as well as the teacher. If they are going to update it maybe implement some MMA, since that is the new popular style. Maybe some flashbacks of Pat Morita and the first film. Has potential but not in the direction it is going so far. I have been disappointed with almost every remake I have seen so far. I think that the Marvel movies did good interpretations from the comics, but movie and tv show remakes all have flopped imo.
What they should do, is have Daniel continue Miyagi's work by having him open and run the Miyagi Do dojo, and lets say Daniel is divorced, and keeps contact with his son through karate, and as previously stated, he stumbles across a kid that needs attention, and helps that kid out the way that Miyagi did. No karate championship, no bad sensei, just one of those respect at the end kinda movies.
