Sundance Film Review: BIG FAN

There has been a lot of talk going around the Sundance film Festival for a movie called ‘Big Fan’ so I went ahead and took the opportunity to check it out, and unfortunately for me and my time it wasn’t that good at all. This film came from the same writer that wrote ‘The Wrestler’ and I guess I just expected it to be just as good, because it was one of my favorite movies last year. But this just goes to show that screenwriters that write really good movies can also write udder crappy nonsense, which is exactly what ‘Big Fan’ was.
First of all the movie was exhaustingly slow, I couldn’t wait for it to be over and neither could a few audience members because some of them got up and walked out. The story was also not really all that interesting either. The main character is a obsessed NY Giants football fan, the kind of fan that calls into those sports talk radio shows to spit off crap of why their team is better than everyone else’s. The main character Paul was really quite pathetic. I was honestly embarrassed for the poor guy. I hate being embarrassed for other people especial people that are only characters in a movie. The guy is a parking attendant that lives at home with his mom, and he just lives, breathes and eats NY Giants football. It comes to a point where he encounters his favorite player on the football team so he and his buddy follow him up to a little club where they devise a plan to go up and meet him. It doesn’t really go so well, and he gets his ass kicked by his favorite football player. This is where the movie takes yet another turn for the worst. Paul is trying the best way he knows how to deal with the consequences of that night.
If there is one good thing that I could say about the movie it is that the acting was decent. Not good enough to make it interesting and carry the film, but it was consistent. The lead role Paul was played by Patton Oswald and he really fit the part, and did a great job, but it is a role I think any decent character actor could have played. It also starred Kevin Coorigan as his best friend and fellow NY Giants fan Sal. It was a fine performance nothing really incredible to talk about.
I just flat out did not like ‘Big Fan’. There are so many bloody plot holes in the film that I lost count. They weren’t little plot holes either that you could just glaze over, but huge plot holes that would have helped drive the story forward and complete the damn thing. At the end you are left with the question you shouldn’t have to be left with in a movie and that question is, “What the hell happened to this, that, and the other thing!? I honestly have no idea how or why in the hell this movie even got made. It will be interesting to see if it gets picked up, who picks it up, how much they paid for it, and why.

I guess Ide be interested to see other reviews this author has written, and who picks them up, and why
Afterall, this site is “geek” “tyrant” .com…….. no? Maybe you should spend less time feeling sorry for the characters and more time feeling sorry for yourself.
