T.V. Shows I Revisited – “Spaced”

“They say that the family of the 20th century will be made up of friends”. I recently went back and re-explored Spaced and found myself obsessed. Quite possibly my all time favorite television show. Spaced is a comedy series about a group of friends living in London who are struggling with everyday life and the pains of maturity. Tim Bisley (Simon Pegg) and Daisey Steiner (Jessica Stevenson) are 2 strangers who meet in a cafe. They both find that they are each searching for a place to live. They then pretend to be a couple in order to rent a flat in London that was advertised as couples only. As they move into their new place they encounter a slew of interesting characters.

Tim Bisley played by Simon Pegg (Shaun of The Dead) is a struggling comic book artist who, ironically enough, works in a comic book store and has an unhealthy obsession with general Science Fiction, comic books, Gillian Anderson, and Star Wars. His flatmate is Daisy (Jessica Stevenson, “Son Of Rambow”), a struggling journalist and writer who happens to be incredibly lazy. Mike Watt is Tim’s best friend. Brilliantly played by Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz) who is in fact Simon Pegg’s real life best friend. Their downstairs neighbor is Brian Topp played by Mark Heap (Big Train) who is a disturbed artist. Other notable characters are: Twist, who is Daisy’s best friend, played brilliantly by Katy Carmichael, landlady Marsha played by Julia Deakin and Daisy’s dog Colin played by Aida the dog. I almost forgot, every episode is directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz)

The show ran for 2 seasons in the UK but you can find every episode on DVD including a behind the scenes documentary, out-takes, deleted scenes, and loads of other gems. You can also see many clips on youtube, especially the infamous “gun” fight scene, Tim yelling at a child who wanted to buy a Jar Jar doll and all of the amazing scenes of the gang going to a Rave.

This show is full of more geek references then a Kevin Smith movie. With an appearance of 2 government agents that are reminiscent of The Matrix and an episode ending taking right out of Empire Strikes Back. Spaced is a must for any Geek. If you liked Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz, you will love this show. If you consider yourself a geek…YOU NEED TO SEE THIS SHOW!!!!
Watch it. You will not be dissapointed.
