Battlestar Galactica Big Screen Movie

This is some interesting news but I am kind of torn. I am a huge fan of the new Battlestar Galactica series it is one of the best shows ever to grace our HDTV’s. This new movie will not be based off of this series but will be based off of the 1978-79 version. IGN Movies is reporting that Universal Pictures is planning to develop the old TV series into a feature film, and that creator Glen A. Larson is lined up to write the script and produce it. They go on to say:

We were informed that the film will be based on the original BSG series from 1978-79 rather than the recent reboot from Sci Fi Channel. The story followed a band of humans who were the only survivors of a devastating attack on their colonial homeworld by the vicious cybernetic race known as the Cylons. The survivors, led by Commander Adama, embark on a journey through space aboard the military vessel Battlestar Galactica to find refuge on a distant planet called Earth.

Well hell, if you ask me that sounds exactly like what the new TV series is! They will just recast everyone and and condense the story down into 2 hours. One thing is for certain, the Scifi channel series has set an incredibly high bar, one that will be extremely hard to top in my opinion. This is a project I really want to be excited about! But what if it turns out to be one of those films that is all special effects and no story depth and ends up being just an empty movie. After going through the whole Scifi series I honestly don’t see the point in making a movie unless it is based off this current series because that is where all the Galacitca fans are at right now. Does anyone have anything positive to say to make me feel better about this because I am listening.

I don’t like this at all. I found TOS to be cheesy. The new series is amazing. I’d prefer they take a variation of it to the big screen. Ah well, Hollywood. I’ll not waste my money on it at the theater, I’ll just wait for DVD or skip it.

Don’t be down about the announced film spawning off of the original series rather than the new BSG! There are many things that they can do with the original theme BSG that they would be limited by if they chose to make a BSG 2.0 feature film.

The original series was lighter in tone, making for a potentially much for family-friendly feature film. (Hah, look at that alliteration!)

Also, the BSG 2.0 storyline has progressed so far, that there’s not much they could do with a movie that wouldn’t require a HUGE amount of retelling the story … for people who were just coming in at the movie, and hadn’t watched years of the new series.

Personally, I’m happy that they are heading back to the original for this one … I have high hopes!

I loved the original series and I think the current series is quite possibly the greatest Television series ever made. I am not entirely against the idea I just think they are a bit too late to do it. they should have done this 10-15 years ago. I will more than likely skip it and wait for it to be on HBO or something. I will not spend money on it. I probably wont even bother watching it at all.

Remember that the old series was an attempt to cash in on Star Wars. The first 2 hours were put out as a theatrical release first, then re-shown to start the series. Watching it when it originally aired, I was always rooting for it to be good, but it just never really managed to be satisfying, probably better than the Buck Rogers series, but not much. And I am talking about story, not whether the fx were any good or not. The characters were just too one-dimensional, so the results were way too predictable. So, I can see any new movie based on this being just like the SpeedRacer movie, flashy but empty.
