STAR TREK Sequel has been put in Motion
I Guess Paramount Pictures is pretty damn confident in J.J. Abrams ‘Star Trek’ movie because the engine has been started for the sequel. The new Trek movie will launch into theaters May 8th and it is bound to do extremely well at the box office. There is a lot of hype building up around this ‘Star Trek’ and it looks like it is going to be an incredible film.
Paramount has hired Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to start getting to work on the screenplay for the next Star Trek movie. J.J. Abrams is already set to produce the sequel, but has yet to make a decision on whether or not he will direct it. I don’t think I would like it if he didn’t return to direct the sequel. But, we’ll have to wait and see what happens. Maybe they will bring in Brett Ratner to helm the film. I wouldn’t doubt it. If he doesn’t take the wheel with this one I hope they get someone talented. Variety reports:
Story is still in the embryonic stage, but the trio are aiming to deliver their script to the Melrose studio by Christmas for what would likely be a summer 2011 release.
“There’s obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn’t even come out yet,” said Lindelof, co-creator with Abrams of ABC’s “Lost” who produced the upcoming “Trek” but did not contribute to Orci and Kurtzman’s screenplay. “But we’re so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed.”
“Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month,” he said. “With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.”
So there it is! The new Star Trek franchise has begun, and the next film is set to be released Summer 2011. So… what are you thinking?

I think it’s likely that they know this is a hit. If it flops (which is doubtful, but always a possibility) the studio can always pull the plug. They probably have their 3-movie arc already mapped out- so this is just another franchise with built-in sequels (Star Wars, Harry Potter are others to name a few).
I think with the amount of buzz the new trek has had so far(hell nobody reads message boards more then low level production company people) and the type of traffic such buzz created for Spiderman, Spiderman 2, Spiderman 3, Transformers, Iron Man, Batman Begins, Fantastic Four, FF rise of the silver surfer, and the Dark Knight (the most obvious bomb being of course superman returns but thats mainly because Brian singer opted to not restart the series just to start it after the second movie, yes baaad choice) usually if fans seem engaged and invested you can write two or 3 more movies.
Hell even if the next two do not live up to the original(some say the last two matrix movies I like the series but I am including it since I know some did not), or if the original does so well in an underground sense that you feel you can do a sequel or two(Bourne Identity don’t even remember that movie opening but I have seen all 3 whole series is the bomb).
Star Trek is an ensemble movie if there ever was one, even more then say X-men or even fantastic four we fell in love with the interaction of the original star trek cast(granted no way the new kirk can get the “Beam me up scotty” right or the new Mr scott can get “Captain I’m giving her all she’s got” and there better be at least 1 “dammit jim” I don’t give a damn what he’s damning but he better say it once) so it looks like they have a good nucleas if the do decide to maea few sequals.
The only problem with the (I see)new territory is well I kinda like the Wrath of Khan, and if they go into new territory probably won’t get to see that on the silver screen oh well i’ll just go buy the collection.
This news is buzzing around various boards I’ve visited around the net.
Its an exciting time for Trekkies.
I hope the new film(s) live up to our hopes.
