Unfortunately Universal Pictures is Remaking Cronenberges VIDEODROME

I am so sorry that I have to bring you this news. I am a pretty embarrassed for Hollywood right now because of there lack of originality and imagination. It has been reported that Universal Pictures is actually crazy enough to remake David Cronenberg’s 1983 film ‘Videodrome’ which starred James Woods.

This is a movie that obviously has no business being remade. Whats crazy is the producers of the film actually went out to track down the people that own the rights. No one went to them! These guys were actually sitting around thinking of movie to remake, and someone said “Videodrome hasn’t been remade yet! Lets do that!

Ehren Kruger has been brought in to write the script, she is also wrote films such as ‘Transformers 2′, ‘The Brothers Grimm’, ‘The Skeleton Key’, ‘The Ring 1 and 2′, and ‘Scream 3′. So she has a good mix of credits under her belt, but it still doesn’t help the fact that ‘Videodrome’ is getting remade. Of course this new movie will bring the concept into the modern day, and infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology, and end up developing it into a large-scale sci-fi action film of death and torture.

Anyone that has seen ‘Videodrone’ and know of it’s awesomeness will hate the idea of a remake, but for those that have not seen it, I guess you just won’t care. However I recommend you watch it. In the end it is justr ridiculous that that the movie is being remade.

So far Cronenberg has no part in the project and I really don’t think he will come on board. I will be shocked if he did.

Look, the movie is one of those classic 80’s films that doesn’t need to be touched. Here is the trailer for the original ‘Videodrome’ if you have not seen the movie yet. I love these trailers from the 80’s.

Wow, I never imagined that Cronenberg (who, ironically, made some amazing remakes himself) would end up being remade. Videodrome? It was and is such an amazing film. This is such a stupid idea. If it gets people to watch the original, that’s cool, but please do not go see this remake.

    I’m sure Cronenberg is pleased…

Awful news. I just watched this one again recently, and it remains pertinent.

I can understand the impulse from only one point of view and that’s because the technology in the original film is completely out of date.

However, that doesn’t spoil my enjoyment of the film. I still love Coppola’s The Conversation, and the tech in that film is dreadfully dated. The story, acting, and direction remain flawless, however.

Btw, Ehren Kruger is a man. It will remain to be seen if he can tackle this job.

Worst thing I’ve ever heard. Videodrome is one of my top 5 favorite films. I cite it in every media class I take, and half of it’s power is how prophetic and original it was/is. Ehren Kruger will never conjure anything that will be just as powerful in 20 years as it is upon release.

Ten to one the remake will be rated PG-13. What’s next – G-rated remakes of Midnight Cowboy and Taxi Driver?

I can’t wait to have a shiny, new, remade Videdrome dvd… for me to poop on. At least this will ensure the original makes it to blu-ray.

You cite Kruger’s authorship of The Brothers Grimm as if it were something to be proud of. That movie was so bad, it was like a train crashing into a collapsing building, the rubble of which was then obliterated by an asteroid.

I think I’ll skip this one.

I’m sorry, but I have to correct the grammatical errors in your piece. They make a potentially great post painful to read.

“because of there lack of originality” should be “their lack.” “There” is an adverb, “their” means “belongs to them.

“Whats crazy is” should be “What’s crazy is….” “What’s” = What is. The same is true of “Lets.” It should be “Let’s.” “Let’s” = Let us.

Finally, “it’s awesomeness” should be “its awesomeness.” “It’s” = It is/It has. “Its” = belongs to it.

Having said all of this, I totally agree with you that remaking Videodrome is a terrible idea. The story was appropriate for its era, when VHS and Betamax video technology were fairly new as a mass entertainment addition to television, but now the idea is anachronistic today. They need to think about the addictiveness and narcotic power of social networking software, like several unnamed sites/services.

I don’t know what you guys are talking about. This is going to be great! All the updated CG and twists in storytelling that I am sure it’s going to take. This will be a massive and epic film!

I think they should remake “Rabid” instead.

Much more timely, with swine flu & all.

And they could dedicate it to Marilyn Chambers!
