One of the main reasons why the second film was so successful was due to the late Heath Ledger. Yes, his death ramped up the sales and PR of this movie. Everyone thinks it, but not many people actually say it.

However, that does not change the fact that the Joker was possibly his greatest performance ever - so great, in fact, that he was taking anti-depressants for falling so fully into his character. (I have no direct ties to Heath Ledger, therefore I can by no means confirm this suspicion, but it would make quite a bit of sense.)

Although the place in my heart for Micheal Keaton and Jack Nicholson's performances as the same characters, I've opened myself up to Bale and Ledger's versions because they were equally amazing (and perfectly cast, I might add).

I would never have looked at Heath Ledger and said to myself "That guy would make a great Joker." It just proves to us all that he truly had it in him to go outside the box with his acting abilities.

Anyway, enough said about Ledger's role as Joker. The third movie definately has big shoes to fill on the subject of acting performances as well as financial gains.

I predict it will do very well but I doubt it will make the same financial marks as The Dark Knight did. It will be good as long as Nolan sticks with it through the trilogy, don't get me wrong, but I don't foresee any movies in the near future reaching the same level of hype as the second Batman movie did. (Mainly due to Heath Ledger's death.)

The studio would be stupid to attempt to create a sequel without Chris Nolan. He's part of what made these movies the amazing films they are. That just doesn't make sense to me from a production view. Nolans style is what these Batman films us as a foundation.
That being said,if they go with a new director,I would keep an open mind towards Batman 3

A third movie would be good, especially after how Batman told the Joker that they were done professionally.
