Robert Zemeckis wants to Make a Motion Capture ROGER RABBIT Sequel

There is a movie sequel floating around in Robert Zemeckis’ head, and it’s for ‘Roger Rabbit’ believe it or not. Who would have thought? Robert Zemeckis is that director that has completely turned to motion capture technology for all of his filmmaking needs. It started with the creepy children with dead eyes in the Polar Express, moved on to Angelina Jolie who made being CGI the sexy thing to do, and he is now currently in production on ‘A Christmas Carol’ staring Jim Carry as everyone in the story pretty much. Now he is talking about doing the same thing with Roger Rabbit.

“I’ll tell you what is buzzing around in my head now that we have the ability—the digital tools, performance capture—I’m starting to think about ‘Roger Rabbit.’”

Who didn’t love the original movie! Especially as a kid seeing cartoons interacting with the real world was unavailable! To this day when ever I drive through Griffith Park in Hollywood CA ,and I drive through that tunnel that they used in the movie that leads to Toon Town I still think, “Wow, wouldn’t it be great if this tunnel actually took me to Toon Town!” It was a fun movie.

Zemeckis wouldn’t give any more details on the project. But do we really need a motion capture Roger Rabbit movie? Personally I don’t think we do, what’s the point if Bob Hoskins does come back as detective Eddie Valiant. He will most likely set it up in present day or maybe even in the future. Who knows all we can do is speculate at this point.

I am sure there are some fun stories to play with. Like a war against 2D animated characters and 3D animated characters. Or the 2D characters coming in contact with their 3D selves creating some universal paradox in time and space.

There were already a couple sequels to the film that went strait to DVD and aren’t worth the time to watch.

So are you excited for a new motion capture Roger Rabbit movie?

  1. Mocap looks like dead meat on April 30th, 09

This man needs to be stopped! “Performance Capture” is not an advancement! Why do you think Disney animators don’t trace over live action footage? Because it makes the characters look dead! Or being dragged around on meat hooks. Motion capture is only good in cases like Gollum or King Kong where animated characters need to exist along side live action characters. And in those cases animators are there, constantly massaging the motion capture to look right. There is no point in having an all motion-capture movie. Zemeckis is just doing this so he only has to work 9-5. Or so he can put the camera anywhere which is NOT a good idea. (Who wants to see the camera shoved into the back of some screaming girl’s throat?(Beowulf)). Mo-crap can’t top the 2-D animation done by Richard Williams and James Baxter in the original. Nothing good can come of this.

If this movie happens, it will only be because Zemeckis manages to make both Disney and Warner Bros happy.

In other words, it wont happen.

wow mocap is so passionate about this…. they must be an animator ;)

  4. Black Adam on April 30th, 09

With all the advancements that Cameron has made while doing Avatar, mocap could look really impressive if/when this gets made.

  5. Zemeckis please retire on April 30th, 09

That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. Okay the ridiculous idea is that the characters that he wants to mo cap are cartoon characters! It doesn’t make any sense because mo cap is supposed to capture realistic movements which is the complete opposite of cartoon movement. How the heck is an actor in a mocap suit going to jump six feet in the air and have his eyes bug out of his skull?
