Director Rian Johnson’s next film will be a completely different genre than his first two movies. He is going the road of the Sci-Fi. ‘Brick’ was awesome, ‘The Brothers Bloom’ looks like it will be a great comedic film, and ‘Looper’ just sounds like it is going blow us away.

Last year reported that Looper would be his next film and all we pretty much had to go on was this little bit of information:

“Looper is set in a present-day world in which a group of hitmen are sent their victims from the future,”

Thanks to our friends at /film who talked to Johnson recently about the upcoming project we now have a better idea of what the movie is going to be about.

  • The film will be set roughly thirty years in the future
  • The film will depict a dystopian society that has gone to “hell.”
  • A disruptive element will have traveled back in time from even further in the future
  • The time travel element is part of the setup, much like in The Terminator, but not an active ongoing part of the story
  • Looper will be “very dark, very violent. It’s the exact opposite of Bloom.”

Rian also says that he is currently working on the second draft of the script, and adds that “Time travel is a bitch”. He goes on to explain things in a little bit more detail in the interview. My first thought when I read this stuff was ‘Minority Report’, but Johnson say’s “It’s not like Minority Report, we’re not dealing with a ton of crazy technology”.

I am really excited to see what Johnson creates for this world and see the characters he comes up with. I think this guy has a very strong future in the business of making movies.
