GREEN LANTERN Gets a Nice Big Budget

It looks like Warners Bros is throwing a good amount of money in the pot to make sure they get the Green Lantern movie they want to see, and hopefully the what they want to see is the same thing we want to see. The comic book film has been handed a budget of $150 million dollars. What can you get for $150 million bucks? Well, here is a rundown of other comic book film budgets. Fantastic Four was built on $100 million, Iron Man had a budget of $140 million, Watchmen was given $150 million, The Dark Knight got $185 million, X-Men 3 was made on $210 million, and Spider-Man 3 has a crazy $258 million budget. Petty crazy huh? I don’t think Green Lantern needs more that what it got as long as they spend it wisely on the right talent.

Green Lantern is being directed by Martin Campbell who also made ‘Casino Royale’, the script was written by Greg Berlanti and Michael Green, which I hear it is really good. The film will be shooting in Sydney Australia. There are a lot of films shooting in Austrailia these days, and that is because the America dollar is worth more there and they offer a 15% location rebate.

Filming for Green lantern is scheduled to start in November with a planned release date of December 17, 2010.

This is for you kiddo…. Chris Pine (Captain James T. Kirk) is tapped to be Hal Jordan (Green Lantern), and other than the script needing to be GREAT, (I’ve read it, and it’s pretty Frakking fantastic!!!) The money for a GL film needs to be spent on VFX NOT Talent. While talent is incredibly important, a great director will do the job of bringing out a stellar performance, but with a property like GL which is chalk filled with Aliens and Powers, you need to make sure those two aspects are treated with the utmost care. After all, those VFX will make or break the film, in this case of course.

    I’d say both are important.

A movie about Green Lantern would depend heavily on special effects. The coolest thing about his power is that its limited only by his imagination and his willpower. It wouldn’t be fair to the character if his powers were also limited by a small effects budget.
