More on Stephen Kings IT Adaptation

We have a little update from the screenwriter on the big screen version of Stephen King’s ‘IT’ that is being adapted once again. If you have read the book then you know how epic this horror story is. It was a four hour TV movie in the 90’s and they still couldn’t get it all in, but for a TV show in the 90’s it was pretty damn good. I loved that movie. When we reported this news a few weeks back a lot of people were not happy with the idea. I have mixed feeling about it. If they can make a good film I’m all for it. They are obviously going strait from the book on this one, and it’s really no surprise that this movie they are making will end up being rated ‘R’. Screenwriter Dave Kajganich says:

“The remake will be set in the mid-1980s and in the present almost equally — mirroring the twenty-odd-year gap King uses in the book — and with a *great* deal of care and attention paid to the backstories of all the characters. I think the real twist here is that my pitch to WB — which they’ve assured me they’re on board for — is that this will not be PG-13. This will be R. Which means we can really honor the book and engage with the traumas (both the paranormal ones and those they deal with at home and school) that these character endure.”

Why is the film being rated ‘R’ the “real twist”? Most Stephen King movie have ended up being rated ‘R’ and I would have never thought this would be a PG-13 movie. The Book itself is a hard ‘R’. He continues to pledge his allegiance to Stephen King.

“I plan to be very protective of the book. The reality, though, is that WB wants to do this as a single film, so I will have to kill a few darlings to make that happen. You have my promise, though, that I will do this with the utmost humility and respect for King’s work. He’s the King, after all, and I intend to continue to pledge to him my allegiance.”

This could end up being a really good movie. There is just so much that will have to be cut out of the story. I hope the movie has a good flow to it and won’t end up all over the place. I don’t like that they are messing around with the time frame, but I guess the backstory of the kids being set in the 80’s will work. That was my era so I may enjoy it more than I think. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Maybe they will cast Earl Jackie Haley as Pennywise The Clown!

What are you thoughts on the new ‘IT’ movie.

Love the idea for a new IT film, but I hated the ending for that TV movie. HATED IT. So I hope they get it right this time, cause I truly love the book. And c’mon, JEH as Pennywise? Not a bad idea, but can you say “overexposure”?

Yeah the ending was not so epic, typically king movies :)

I has high hopes for the movie, maybe to high >_<

First and foremost, I’m a HUGE King Fan! A bit skeptical about how they’re gonna fit it in to one movie though. Dreamcatcher didn’t translate that well, even though the book was good and just as far out there as any of them. Beep Beep Richie, I know, I know, opinions are like screenplays, everyone has one. However, I remember that book actually causing nightmares the first time I read it, up until the point that they decided that both in the past and the present, that the only way to get away from Pennywise was to bang that chick! They kinda left that out of the TV movie, go figure. Anyway, King’s books always rule up until the end, and then we get that weird WTF ending (The Stand, Dark Tower, Rose Madder, Needful Things, Desperation, etc) Although I do like the “darkened” movie ending on The Mist, that was fun. In a morbid way, but hey, My name’s Darth Psycho, and I’m a King fan, so it’s okay to enjoy a completely entertaining gruesome ending. I hope that they’ll do a good job with It.

I honestly have been excited about this, since it was announced, and now that my one fear of the film has been assured (the whole pg-13/r fiasco) I can rest easy and eagerly await for the film to be released, hopefully they won’t cut too much (though it was like an 1000 page book (at least paperback was) and for it to fit in one flick of course they’ll cut) but i have faith having read what I just read.
Hopefully it won’t be a Ray Harrihausen puppet Spider Monster this time.
