THE HOBBIT Film Format Confirmed By Del Toro and Jackson
This is the biggest news to come out from Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson’s collaboration on ‘The Hobbit’ since they said they were going to split the movie into two different films. We now have clarification of what that actually means. It had been talked about before that the ‘The Hobbit’ would be the first film and the second film would help bridge the gap between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘Fellowship of the Ring’. It no longer sounds like that is the case. Del Toro reveals:
“We’ve decided to have The Hobbit span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur,”
Jackson adds:
“We decided it would be a mistake to try to cram everything into one movie. The essential brief was to do The Hobbit, and it allows us to make The Hobbit in a little more style, if you like, of the [LOTR] trilogy.”
Which I am completely fine with! Look, The Hobbit is getting made, and if we can get two films out of it then all the better! The movies will end up being a even better adaptation of the book. Now if we can try and talk them into making the pre- prequel based on the ‘Similarion’ somewhere down the road, then we are good to go!
I can’t wait for this! In my opinion I still have not seen a movie that has out-done the masterpiaece of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Trilogy. The two new movies come out December 2011 and 2012.
Any thoughts you would like to add regarding The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings?

I am really excited for this! So far, this is one of the few parts of my childhood that has been treated with the utmost respect when being adapted for the big screen.
I love this – it’ll be much better if they don’t have to rush the plot along.
Actually, there are times when I wish they’d been able to make the LOTR trilogy into six films, though of course that never would have happened.
I wonder if there’s any chance of that “gap-bridging film” being made somewhere down the road…
Wow! There’ve been little snippets of info regarding the Hobbit films here and there but this will surely give a nerdgasm to anyone whose childhood fairytales included readings from The Hobbit and later on of course, LotR.
As they say ‘two’s better than one’!! However I hope they retain the more comic aspects of Bilbo’s travails rather than ‘epicising ‘ it into the LotR movies style.
The Hobbit is easily one of my favorite books of all time, so i hope that when they go into it, they take into account that a lot of people (myself included) hold this book in higher raguard than even the Lord of the Rings.
It’s easily to think you have a grasp on something and then loose it all together, if they fuck this shit up, someone is going to hang. I hope they lock themselves away, ignore everything anyone has to say, listen to the source material and simple create.
I don’t give a shit about a bridging movie between the books, i want drawfs in barrels, Legolas’ dad and a motherfucking DRAGON.
P.s If we’re compiling a list, can i also have a battle of the five armies and some trolls. Thank you.
I agree with the decision, though- as rich as Tolkien’s worlds are- I believe you can tell the Hobbit pretty well as one film. Rankin Bass did a pretty decent job with their animated film and its had nowhere near the budget/time that Jackson and Del Toro have.
However, splitting the story more evenly and not essentially have a “fill in” piece where we explain what Bilbo did when he came back from Mt. Doom and the Battle of Five Armies is a great choice. There should be something said for allowing the films to still be engaging on a general level and not just copy each moment and scene in the book word-for-word.
/From the headline I at first thought this was going to discuss the actual film format (aspect ratio, film/digital, etc.) Either way, still interesting.
