UMBRELLA ACADEMY set up at Universal and gets a Screenwriter
Umbrella Academy will be the first film project to be developed under their three year production deal with Dark Horse Comics. They have brought in a screenwriter to write the script by the name of Mark Bomback who wrote other films such as ‘Live Free die Hard’ and ‘Race to Witch Mountain’, so that will give you an idea of what you can expect from the film.
I don’t know if you have read the ‘Umbrella Academy’ comic book or not, but I read the first couple issues and it just didn’t hook me. The art was interesting, but I felt the writing was pretty weak compared to the other comic book out their. It was written and created by Gerard Way who is the lead singer of ‘My Chemical Romance’. So you know what the soundtrack of the movie is going to be like.
The story is about a disbanded group of superheroes called the Umbrella Academy who reunite after the death of their adoptive father, “Sir Reginald Hargreeves”. Hargreeves who is an alien disguised as a famous entrepreneur, collected the members of the Umbrella Academy shortly after their birth and trained them to save the world from an unspecified threat. After his death, the members carry on his plan to save the world.
I can’t say that I am overly excited about this film project since I wasn’t sold on the comic book, but who knows maybe the film will be better. Are you excited for this comic book being made into a film?

the second series is much better than the first.
I can’t stand Gerard Way. He is such a pretentious douche.
Gabriel Ba´s art is fantastic! It´s a shame that Gerard´s stories are so lame.
The Unbrella Academy series is awesome and just because the writer haappens to be in a band does not mean the band’s music will be featured. First of all, who cares if it is? Second of all, MCR’s music wouldn’t even suit the tone of the books. And Although I don’t think that a UA movie would be in the ranks of say, Dark Knight, Iron Man, or Watchmen, it would still make a really awesome cult flick that you watch at two am after a Hellboy double feature or something. And by the way, Gerard is not pretentious at all. He is a great person and a talented writer/musician. and just to be clear, they do not go hand in hand. The comics have nothing to do with the band whatsoever. I for one would love to see the Apocalypse Suite on the big screen
What I hate about the Umbrella Academy is the fact that every single teenage MCR fan reads it only because of Gerard Way writing it. I seriously think if he kept it on the down-low and went under a fake name, it’d be looked at entirely different from people who say “Oh, My Chemical Romance sucks so this must suck as well.”
As for the comic itself, the art is great. Yes, in the first series, Apocalypse Suite, the writing is a little weak but only because he’s throwing all of this stuff at us at once. You’ve got to introduce a team and throw in a whole back-story as well as current events with them all at once. I haven’t personally read the second series, Dallas, yet but I’ve heard very good reviews about it.
Hopefully Gerard leaves his MCR persona for music and takes a new approach to help with the movie and hopefully it comes out better than people think it’ll be.
Thanks for your input everyone! I will give it another go based on most of you liking it.
yeah, I definitely feel that most people are biased because Gerard is most well known because of his work with MCR, but I don’t think he should have to assume a fake name just to get his work recognized. I think Apocalypse Suite would make a great movie if they spread out the details more and included more character background.
"their three year production deal with Dark Horse Comics" …oh f*ck. please don't get Fray, please please please don't get Fray…x(
