It looks like Sony Picture is officially moving forward with the Spider-Man spin-off film that will focus on Venom. Who knows maybe they will get the character right this time around because using him as a villain in Spider-Man 3 was a waste of a villain. This news has been confirmed by the two guys which have been brought on to write the film. Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese who also most recently wrote ‘Zombieland’ are the guy who will bring Venom to life once again. They recently talked to scifiwire and said:

“We had a really great relationship with Sony on [Zombieland], and so that was a nice in for us there, It gave us a leg up. We’re under strict orders on Venom, We can’t talk about it. It’s just super secret.”

Super secret huh? Well they have a ton of comic books out there that have Venom story lines, it’s not like they are inventing a new and original character or story. Come on now. Apparently they are fans of the super villain, which is no surprise they better like him if they are writing the script!

“We read [Venom] growing up, but we were not experts. We certainly know the mythology of Venom, but went back and learned more when it became clear that we could actually get this job.”

Well it looks like they got it, and the movie has been set in motion. There are a ton of fans out their that hated what they did with the character in ‘Spider-Man 3′ these guys have put themselves in a place open to scrutiny from the fans. They what to keep the fans interest at heart and admit that…

“Absolutely. I’m terrified! It’s source material that everybody knows and everybody’s familiar with and everybody loves. There’s a burden on you to meet the expectations of people. A lot of people are curious about Venom.”

So there it is folks. Venom is in development. I’m pretty stoked that they are going to give the character another chance. Maybe Sony has learned from their mistakes and will do it right this time around. How do you feel about the news?

I hope they don’t mess it up. I wonder how they will incorporate everything….Could we see Carnage?

Cool! But if hey mess up…I will hate them to death. Or as close to it as possible.

I am not counting on much. This is a third tier character at best, with little recognition beyond the comic book fans. I kind of like the effort that Marvel puts into spreading the good word of the comics-based properties. Comics can use all the help they can get and I don’t see any other company actively pushing their content into other media. But I sometimes wonder how far a character like Venom can carry outside of his traditional role as Spider-man’s nemesis.

Its too early to shrug off the news, but I’m not expecting much. Is this feature talk or are we gonna get an animated Direct to DVD title?

I wouls seriously not mind seeing him played by Topher Grace again, as long as he didn’t make the character such a whiny wimp.

Carnage or Scorpion (set up for Mac Gargan anyone?) would be amazing villians.

Filmgeek ummmm obviously your not much of a geek PAST films, venom third tier seriously? Mysterio sure, shocker he was cooler back in the day but looking at his power he sucks, but venom third tier hell nah.

My only problem is venom is dead, how are they gonna fix that. I mean as perfect as Sam Raimi got all the other characters and stuff in spiderman(gobbies costume sucked but the character was dead on), I don’t know how he blew venom so bad. Hell even sandman was perfect.

Venom is one of spidey’s best villians, I could geek out the whole way on venom but the problem is simply either they are gonna pull and incredible hulk or else they are gonna have to slightly fuck another franchise. And with the money spidey has made I severly doubt they will screw with spidey just to possibly add a new title even if it could be a blockbust, because they could all be blockbusters not everyone makes it that high.

    I stand by my name.

I’m not saying Venom is some sort of “unknown” but simply that- compared to Capt. America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Thor, Fantastic Four, X-men, Punisher and Incredible Hulk, he’s pretty low on the list. While I love a lot of the Marvel universe, I am pretty brutal when it comes to turning them into feature films.

Venom isn’t a tentpole. Now Captain America, that’s a show I’d line up to see.
