Movie Review: STAR TREK

bh1230_30745_164r

After all the incredible trailers I have seen, and all the hype that has been built up around J.J. Abrams ‘Star Trek’ movie, I had incredibly high expectations. The expectations were so I high I thought there was no way the movie would meet them, I thought for sure I was going to be let down, but I am happy to tell you all that this was not the case. Star Trek was the best damn film I have seen this year so far, I don’t care what anyone else says. The movie blew my high expectations away. Just so you know I am not a hard core Star Trek fan, although I have watched all the movies, the original Star Trek series, and The Next Generation. Even if you are a hard core trekkie I don’t see how you cannot like this movie. It hits everything we love about Star Trek right in the nose to the point that it just bleeds out greatness.

The moment the movie started I was in awe, my jaw just dropped and hung open. I was immediately engulfed in the world that was created for us. The movie had me in a big giant hug from the beginning to the end of the film, and it wasn’t like a tight annoying bear hug, it was a comfortable hug that just felt right. I couldn’t believe the awesomeness that was unfolding before my eyes! Gigantic star ships flying through space, lasers and explosions, mixed with incredible sound effects and music, a fantastic story with wonderful characters all mixed together in a flurry of brilliance made this one of the best movie going experiences I have had in a very long time. Not since watching ‘Lord of the Rings’ in the theater have I felt this kind of excitement while watching a movie.

J.J. Abrams brought us a ‘Star Trek’ movie unlike anything we have seen in the franchise before. It is better than anything that has previously been made, and is the best Star Trek movie that has been made so far. The story is incredibly solid the dialogue is smart, witty, and fun.

The actors in the film were perfect! I honestly could not have asked for a better cast. Everyone just nailed it. Chris Pine as James T. Kirk was great. He made the character his own. This is Captain Kirk and he has that cockiness strut that just made the character come alive. Zachary Quinto as Spock was just spot on. Simon Pegg as Scotty was brilliant. How can you not love that character? Eric Bana as Nero makes for a awesome villain! Anton Yelchin as Chekov, Bruce Greenwood as Captain Pike, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and John Cho as Sulu all great! But I have to point out my favorite character in the movie… Carl Urban as Dr. Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy. He was amazing! He was the one guy I didn’t like that they cast in the film when casting was first announced, and he ended up being the best guy up on screen. These actors brought a natural feel to the characters they played.

By the way, the special effects in the film were flawless, and they were used in the right ways, the way special effects are meant to be used. As spectacular as they were, they were used to drive the story forward and not as a way to scream out at the audience “look at me! I’m a special effect!” I am convinced that this is what a real space battle would look like if one had actually happened.

The movie stirs up a great mix of emotions with the audience. Moments of intensity, excitement, sadness, happiness, comedy, and drama. These emotions all flowed so smoothly with the story. J.J. Abrams ‘Star Trek’ is everything a great movie needs to be. I don’t see how anyone can go see this movie and just not enjoy the hell out of it.

I have been trying to pick the movie apart in my head and thing of anything that I didn’t like, but I couldn’t think of one thing. In my mind this a damn near perfect summer movie.

Not a Trekkie but I cant wait

WoW..I cant wait to see the Movie and switch to the Dark side. George Lucas really made me a disgruntled Star Wars fan after that last crap fest of 3 movies that were made. This Star Trek reboot looks to be the Sci-Fi franchise to go to now.

** PS ..george quit with all the other star wars projects (Clone wars and such) They all suck

"I'm not a hard core TREK fan, but I've seen the original TV series. And the movies. And all THE NEXT GENERATION. And DEEP SPACE NINE. And VOYAGER. And ENTERPRISE. And read all the novels. And the comics. And wrote, directed and starred in some episodes of PHASE II. But that's it."

There's not much I can say that hasn't been said already. This movie was fantastic! I have to agree that it's the best movie I've seen all year. I'm not sure how the hardcore Trekkies will react to the storyline, but I think this is just what the Star Trek franchise needed. All of the actors were awesome, it's hard to say who my favorite was because they were all so good. The action was great while not being "over-the-top". We'll just forget about that "weapon x" movie and call this the official start of the summer movie season.

I'm a hardcore fan, have been since I first watched the original series with my dad. It was already cheesey and out-of-date by the time I got to it but it was fantastic. I never got much into Enterprise or Voyager, but I know how a lot of the hardcore trekkies disagreed with me when they saw the trailers and thought this movie would ruin Trek. The thing is, they had to change it…it had to be made fresh, Abrahams got the reaction he wanted from the general public: "I'm not a Trek fan, but I can't wait for this movie". You hear it OVER, AND OVER, AND OVER again. This movie delivered Trek to all the non-believers and you can bet it'll reigns as the best movie of the summer…

This is the best movie out so far this year, and not sure that it is going to be beat, atleast not by Terminator or Transformers. Those look good, but this was just a great movie. I grew up with Star Trek, and this just brings everything back. The humor was amazing. The cast fit very well in the roles.

You know I said it on twitter Star trek cannot get full marks without klingons. Bana was a good villian, ALMOST khan like but he was missing for too much of the move to be khan. But I love it to, yeah I won't lie Urban and Pegg were the two guys I was dieing to throw rotten tomatoes at. But pegg was a great scottie, and when Urban first got on the ship it reminded me of the Transporter scene in the original Star Trek film.

And yeah most space fight films forget the 360 realm of fighting you can do in space, your not in the air usually there is nothing above, below, at 10, 2, 8, 4 or to the left or right. Quinto was probably the only actor I was sure would hit his part perfectly, I mean for the last 3 years he's been playing a somewhat calculating and emotionless character on TV, so just removing the homicidal part from the character was lightwork(in my opinion). Good Movie, but I wanted Klingons.

This is my first Star Trek and I loved it! Yep thats right! I have never seen Star Trek before…but I am a fan now! When is the next one out?

  15. SusanDelgado on May 11th, 09

I am with you completely- the best damn movie this year! I LOVED THIS! And my boyfriend (Far from being a Trekkie, let alone a geek in general) was equally blown away by the stellar cast, relentlessly hypnotizing plot, and exceptional special effects. It was SO good, that for Mother's Day we took my Sisters and Mother to see it (our second time) in lieu of a typical stay-at-home Mother's Day. Even my mother, who loved the original Star Trek, said they nailed the characters and LOVED the movie. Best mother's day I've ever had that's for sure!

The film was great, now ive always been a diehard star wars fan but i loke the star trek movies. and this was a great movie, ive allready seen it 2 times and want to see it again.

  17. Geez on May 13th, 09

No doubt about it. The very best of the year. This movie restarts all the characters and gives them a place to go, where none of them have gone before. Kudos, J J Abrams. (And don't worry, there's plenty of time for Klingons.)

I generally HATE Star Trek but have to say the movie wil take a lot of beating. Awesome!!

  19. Roman on May 16th, 09

Star Trek is cool. Seen it 8 times already. Yeah really cool.

  20. Philistine on May 19th, 09

This movie sucked. From its macguffin belt beginning to its curt conclusion. First, I am not a fan boy but I am familiar with the original series and its subsequent movies. Having written that, this movie offers nothing new that was not done better by that cast. In the new movie all you get are a bunch of idiosyncratic lines, which ques you to whom the character speaking is. I grant it is a faster paced movie; but ultimately, you pay for it with the lack of character development, or even an original practical premise.

  21. Justin on May 20th, 09

Yea, it sucked. It was all smoke, mirrors, sequins and shiny things. I think many were duped into thinking it was good and made sense. The plot had more holes than Swiss cheese. They sacrificed the plot in a desperate attempt to "pass the torch" using Leonard Nimoy. I've been a Star Trek fan for over a decade. After disappointment after disappointment I'm done with Star Trek until they quit sucking ass and start making sense! On a positive note, the acting was EXCELLENT, too bad the story was so idiotic.

  22. mrsmurf on May 26th, 09

To the guy who says Klingons, I say, wait for the next movie. What the hell.

and to the guys who thought this sucked, you suck.

  23. Geez on May 28th, 09

Right on, mrsmurf. I don't think those guys saw the same movie, or maybe they slept through it. Then again, some people are just determined not to like something new. Good thing they weren't network execs when the original came out. It probably wouldn't have made it past season one.

  24. Justin on May 28th, 09

I didn't sleep through it. I went in with such high hopes. I was thrilled about a new movie. The reviews were great, the acting was great, but the plot was so riddled with holes that defied everything Star Trek had established when it came to the character of old Spock and principals of time line change. It's an excellent mindless action flick, which is what so many people want these days. For that I would give it 5 Stars. If I wasn't a fan I might love it. If I didn't know so much about the show it might have been good. I expected more depth, I'm not talking the stale heavy handed messages you get with Star Trek about morality, just any depth beyond cliche and trite character tag lines. I expected plot that made sense withing the Star Trek created universe…or even in general. So far the only good prequel I've ever seen was Wolverine. That movie defied the "prequels are a bad idea" ideology I have since they generally tend to screw up the story. Alas Hollywood has been riding the trend of young and sexy with thin plot. Americans eat up what's handed to them. This movie just left me sad as did Enterprise.
