Universal Pictures is currently developing a new modern day take on the classic Robert Lewis Stevenson novel ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ and it looks like they have given the lead role to none other than Keanu Reeves. If you really want to get a glimpse of what this movie will be like just imagine Keanu delivering this line from the book… ”The moment I choose, I can be rid of Mr. Hyde.”

If you have never read the book shame on you, you should read this thing! it’s a classic! It tells the story of  doctor who scientifically develops an evil self and has become so pervasive in popular culture that the phrase “Jekyll and Hyde” conjures the idea of a split personality. It is reported that plot details for the movie are not being revealed, but the book should give you all the plot details you need, unless they have completely changed it.

This is the second Jekyll and Hyde movie being developed at Universal. Guillermo del Toro is also developing a take on the story. THR reports:

Del Toro, who has an affinity for gothic horror as well as creature features, aims to stick more closely to the Stevenson tale. Also, del Toro’s project is on the slow track as the filmmaker works on “The Hobbit” for New Line and MGM, which is expected to take up the next five years. Even when he comes back, he likely will tackle one or two other Universal projects before his version, so a good amount of time will exist between the projects.

So, what are your thoughts on Keanu Reeves playing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?

doesn't it seem like del toro ALWAYS has a thousand things he's "planning"? I just can't believe he will get to everything.

One day he will have his hand in every movie being made all over the world.

I actually think this is a movie where Keanu's personality can fit well with the role of his character.

I've read the book and performed as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde in the musical adaptation (which is excellent). Having said that, this casting decision makes me sick

All I can think of is Keanu delivering that line ("The moment I choose, I can be rid of Mr. Hyde.") in that semi-husky "whoa" voice. Not good.

I think he will shock everyone, with the most intriguing take, yet, on a complex and fascinating character.
Those who insist on a Bill and Ted mentality bid fondly farewell, long ago, by Keanu Reeves himself, as an actor, ignore, to their detriment, the fact that this man is more well read than many would-be academics, and will, like most of his other work efforts, focus completely on his idea of "perfecting characterization."
This kind of professionalism and studied consideration is rare in other lines of work, but in this one, it truly separates the"men from the gnomes".,Keanu Reeve's dedication to his craft, and his workmanlike approach to careful study, preparation, and consideration of a role, is not something touted, (no doubt due to the monotony of repeated and focused effort, however unexciting) but always yields results.
With quiet appreciation, I look forward to many years of his interesting and varied choices, as he stretches, and grows, as an actor. The world continues to be a better place, with his talent progressing in it, to the delight and respect, of those watching.
