this may be one of those few exceptions to the rule moments in which a reboot of a movie could work (think recent batman - but to the very least ala star trek) why dont they just start redoing gone with the wind? the quiet man? one flew over the cuckoos nest? or abbott and costello? hell - why dont they redo showgirls! my bet will be on ishtar.

Uhm, does the name David Fincher ring a bell at all, MJ056? Sounds like you really just want to watch the old movies since you basically described the plot of Alien & Aliens. I fail to believe that rehashing one of the already successful stories is what Ridley & Tony Scott have in mind. There's got to be more than 2 worn out plotlines available out there if they're coming back to the franchise.

This franchise hasn't been anything special since "Aliens," which is arguably a better movie than the original. Besides the first two movies, though, it's been a mess. The reason behind this isn't rocket science. You had Ridley Scott directing the original and James Cameron handling the sequel. Who directed Alien 3, Resurrection, AVP, etc? No one noteworthy.

This is a great foundation to work with IF you use what worked in the first two movies. The problem is, though, that "Alien" and "Aliens" were two different genres. "Alien" was a horror movie and the sequel was an action movie. Every movie after that couldn't decide which one it was trying to be.

Point being, if you're going to make another Alien movie, there are two essentials:
1. Take one of the original directors (Scott or Cameron) and put them back on board. CHECK!
2. Choose between a horror film with one alien that we barely see until the end, or an action film where we aren't as scared as we are tense and anxious to see how the adventure progresses. The movie can't be scary with a bunch of aliens jumping around getting shot at, and likewise the action element is removed somewhat when you only use one monster and a much more defenseless crew.

Either way, I trust Ridley Scott. The guy made the franchise what it is, and it only makes sense to leave things in his hands (or those of James Cameron).

Didn't we all say the same thing upon hearing about Terminator Salvation? I lean toward the "DO NOT REMAKE" side of this argument. Save the franchise from anymore embarrassment. ie, Alien Resurrection, AVP, and AVP:R

I've got a crazy idea... how about a NEW movie using a NEW idea from one of the hundreds of excellent science fiction authors living or otherwise, and not yet another warmed-over corpse of a franchise installment? That this seems more likely now is yet another reason to hate the Star Trek reboot.

Humbug!

If they go with a 20 something Ripley, my vote is for Emily Browning from Lemony Snicket & Sucker Punch. Someone will build a film franchise around her if they're smart.

As long as they don't mess up the pivotal "Ripley in her underwear with a crossbow" scene, I'm good.

Lets hope for an origin story that would relate to the books and show backstory to where the ship in the first movie came from. A story showing how the Alien took over other ummmmm...aliens.
