Doctor Who Wearing Mouse Ears?

Karen Gillan

So the BBC have announced who the companion to the 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, shall be in the next series starting next year.

Little-known actress Karen Gillan has been unveiled as the next person to ride through space and time with The Doctor. Gillan has already appeared in the drama, having played a Soothsayer in The Fires Of Pompeii in the last run.

“I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor’s new companion. – I just can’t wait to get started,” she said. “The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can’t quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

Fantastic. Brilliant. Just what the world needs. I’m sorry, call me Tennant loyal to an extreme degree but this is kind of ridiculous. First the youngest Doctor ever. Which I’m fine with. I can understand the need to bring some fresh blood in, but this takes the cake. Why not just break down and get Michelle Tractenberg to play his next companion? Or better yet, get Miley Cyrus or Ashely Tisdale.

I know Stephen Moffatt is an incredible writer. The episodes he penned under the RTD regime were fantastic. Award winning even. But after this, Im going to have to put all my reservations right out there and hope that this doesn’t spell a premature end for my beloved Doctor.

    Don't be a div.

Title is a bit of a whiff of overreaction me thinks.

I'm reserving judgement… mostly. I'm not making a secret out of the fact that I'm not especially happy. I'm reserving judgement for Matt Smith too…. but I'm holding much higher hopes for him then her…. *sigh*

They needed to bring in a small name actress to play his assistant. If they had anyone who was better known than Matt Smith, then suddenly the show becomes about the assistant and not the doctor.

I trust Moffat's judgement, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I think the age thing is being blown out of proportion. Karen's not much younger than Billie was when she took on Rose, and Peter Davidson only had a few years on Smith when he became the Doctor. I think both actors are plenty capable of taking on their respective roles. The real question behind this change is "will the change make the show better"? God, I hope so.

There is going to be some trepidation over the changeover. I remember being nervous about Tennant, and it took awhile before he grew on me. That being said, the show as a whole has gone further and further downhill. Characters and events have been contrived and shallow. The show has been more of a fanboy orgasm than a legitimate show standing on it's own; it's a caricature of Doctor Who. For the most part I blame this on RTD, so I'm hoping that his departure will give the series life again. I think the casting choices have been a good indication that they're looking to shake things up a bit. That's a good thing, at least as far as I'm concerned. It suggests a new direction that is desperately needed at the moment.

From the promo shots I can picture a potential Doctor Who direction that I really like. I'm officially excited now and await 2010 with bated breath.

    I agree with you 100%

I mean Rose Tyler was Billie's 1st acting so she was relatively unknown and I'd not heard of Freema before Dr Who. The only assistant who's really been known before was Catherine but she wasn't really known as that kind of actor.

I like it! Hes a young Doc so she needs to be young too – I'm willing to see this play out
