Live Action ROBOTECH Movie gets a new Writer

robotech

I couldn’t be more excited for the Live-Action Robotech movie that is being developed by Tobey Maguire and his production team.  A new writer by the name of Tom Rob Smith has jumped on board the project. Smith is an award-winning novelist and is also a UK TV writer. From the stuff he has developed it seems like he will be able to bring in a serious tone to the movie. The first novel he wrote was called ‘Child 44, which is about a series of child murders in Stalinist Russia.

A source close to the ‘Robotech’ project says:

“He had a very clear vision for the material that seemed to fit the collective group’s vision for the property.”

Previous drafts of the ‘Robotech’ script have been written by Lawrence Kasdan and Alfred Gough & Miles Millar if those names sound familiar it is because they worked on the TV show ‘Smallville’. ‘Robotech’ has been in development for 2 years now, just as long as the live-action ‘Akira’ film which currently no longer happening. Akiva Goldsman (’Jonah Hex’), Charles Roven (’The Dark Knight’) and Jason Netter (’Wanted’) are the producers on the project, so you have a very strong group of people pusing this movie forward. Maguire is also rumored to be starring the in the movie as well.

I am pumped up for this film, and I hope it finally happens! This is a film that has the potential to blow people away with its awesomness! What do you all think? Are you looking forward to a ‘Robotech’ film? It is sure to be a better film than Transformers or G.I. Joe. I just think everyone involved have their heads screwed on right.

This had better turn out well. ROBOTECH is my ALL-TIME favorite cartoon show and it seriously needs to be done right. But after seeing how Hollywood has been 'defiling' all the cartoons I grew up with….I doubt this will turn out different. I am keeping my hopes and expectations very low so that it doesn't taint my memory of the cartoon.

oh god no… please tell me this is fake. Gough and Miles have completely ruined the Superman brand with Smallville and it horrible if they would ruin Robotech as well. Please someone save Robotech from those people.

Why the hell is Toby in it?! He's a dreadful actor… This stinks of fail already…

  4. Jason on June 25th, 09

The rumor is that Toby will play Rick Hunter, I dunno if that's necessarily a good idea. But I'm glad that they're taking their time with it. I vote Josh Duhamel as Roy Fokker.

I am so happy to hear they are going to make my all- time favorite cartoon into a movie. I only hope, like everyone else, that they take their time to make it a potential blockbuster.

Glad to here it is still going. Like everyone else is saying they need to take thier time to get the story right. I am sure Carl macek will keep his hand in this pot until he is throwen out. I met hi
once at a convention and he did not seem to friendly to the people that have supported his work. If Toby does this or not I hope casting the parts will also be detailed.

i hope they get the efx and vfx teams thatworked on battlestar galactica. this robotech movie needs that realistic look and feel to it. BSG achieved that.

The fact that so many (lesser) writers are taking their turns rewriting Lawrence Kasdan makes me scared. Lawrence Kasdan —- he wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Big Chill for crying out loud.

It was the team that did wing comander a live action movie of a video game that did the look of the new BSG. So they have been around a while. Have you seen a live action movie called the returners? Not the greatest production but i feel that the Japenese group that produced that movie could hit a block buster out of ther park and not offend the fans.
for movie execs this means lots of money get it ! Drop the loser Toby! Save face it is the difference of a movie like they make origian for the scy-fy channel and arrmigedon with bruce and the boys LOL

I swear to GOD if they fuck up this movie I will find and KILL each and everyone involved. To see a piece of CRAP story like Transformers do so well is bad enough.

I grew up watching Robotech, I've read every book and watched every Macross movie ever made. The story of Macross is about life and death, pioneering technology and the struggle to survive. There's humor, hope and love, but it is in no way childish so PLEASE don't screw it up.

    THANK YOU

Carlos, I agree Robotech is the best animated series. I can't even think of any anime at that level & I've been watching over 20 years.

Fernando, you hit the nail on the head. The reason why Robotech has such a following after all this time is because it was QUALITY work. They didn't dumb it down like so much animation in America. I'm hoping they realize the magnitude of the series & keep its integrity. This movie is either going to be great or it's going to suck.

Oh yeah, Fernando… I got a bat. If the movie sucks, I'm ready to help!
