SPINAL TAP rocks the ROCK BAND game… luckily no drummers killed

So we’ve got some good news and some bad news for you Tap fans out there. The good news is: Spinal tap will have songs available as downloadable-content for the Rock Band and Rock Band 2 games. The bad news is: The songs are all full price, and only off their latest album Back From The Dead… Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE me some Tap. But it’s hard to ‘crank it to 11′ when you’re playing songs you don’t know. C’mon, give us the classics like “Stonehenge”, “Sex Farm”, “Big Bottom” or any of the other songs we’ve listened to for years.

Is it just me? Or did the movie “This Is Spinal Tap” completely change your life too? No? Do you watch “The Office”?  Then change your answer to yes. Because the 1984 fake documentary, or “Mocumentary” about the fictional band Spinal Tap pioneered that style of storytelling. “This Is Spinal Tap” is one of the funniest/smartest movies ever made, and it’s influence on today’s comedies is undeniable.

What’s even more astounding about the “Fake” band Spinal Tap, is that they really do play and write all of their music. Christopher Guest(Nigel), Michael Mckean(David) and Harry Shearer( Derek) are all amazing musicians. And the songs they write are actually good! Silly, funny, but good. It’s just the characters they portray that aren’t real. The rock is real though, you can taste it. The have even toured, and continue touring under the guise of Spinal Tap to this day.

So here are the names of the tracks that will be available: “Back from the Dead” ,“Rock ‘n’ Roll Nightmare” ,“Saucy Jack”  and “Warmer Than Hell”. The tracks are available Tuesday for the 360 and Thursday for the PS3. Hopefully this little taste of Spinal Tap they’ve given us, opens up the doors for the entire Spinal Tap Soundtrack.

What they need to have is at the end of every tour, the drummer dies and they need to create a new avatar. At least to keep the spirit of the band in the game.

Gotta raise the horns for Spinal Tap, but I'm sad that we're only getting new songs. I want my classic rock!

This is happening more and more with Rock Band. Instead of allowing people to download songs that people know and love, it seems the people at the record companies have found a way to use Rock Band to advertise a band's new album. So they'll release songs from a band that gets people psyched, then say "oh, we're not putting out any of their classics. Here's some tracks off their newest album that you haven't heard yet instead." So basically, Rock Band is the New payola.

I'll go a step further… rockYOUmentary. That just happened!

I wouldn't mind if they do that with more current bands. But for a band that's been around two decades, we want at least a little taste of some of their classics available. What if they released some U2 songs, and didn't put "Sunday Bloody Sunday"? And instead just put stuff off their new record. People would be pissed!!!

That's a very cool idea! I would love to see an entire Spinal Tap Rock Band game. It'd be really cool if they followed the plot of the film, where they're huge, and then their popularity starts to wane. And then you have to climb your way back to the top. Oh, how I wish.
