TRANSFORMERS REVENGE OF THE FALLEN : Movie Review

i31569_transcelebutopia148210 times the action, 10 times the robot, and 10 times the horrible script and story.  I have been trying to figure out what exactly to write concerning this movie. Words cannot describe just how bad the script was. I know, I know, no one is gonna go see this movie for the story. Everyone just wants to see a bunch of CG robots fighting for 2 and a half hours…and… that is pretty much all this movie was. They tried putting in a side story of Sam (Shia Lebeauf) going off to college as well as trying to maintain a long distance relationship with his girlfriend Mikaela (Megan Fox) but in all honesty it was just stupid and unnecessary. It brought nothing to the story and got very very annoying at times.

The dialogue was actually worse than the first movie.  There are 2 new Autobots ‘The Twins” who have the most utterly ridiculous lines in the whole film. I really don’t understand why they went the route they did. I assume they were trying to go for laughs but they failed miserably. It wasn’t funny at all. It was just annoying. I can’t even explain just how bad those characters were.
TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN

They also premiered a few other new characters that weren’t seen in the last film. Namely The Fallen. The Fallen was actually voiced by Tony Todd (Candyman) who is in no way a horrible actor, but that being said, the dialogue again was a bit lacking. I don’t know if they did this on purpose or not but it seemed that they were trying to make The Fallen a bit too much like The Emperor from Star Wars.

Another new character was Jetfire voiced by John Turturro who plays double duty as he also reprises his previous role of Agent Simmons. I will admit that Turturro is probably the best in this film as both characters. His dialogue and performance was as over the top as it was in the last film but at least it was entertaining.

The human characters were for lack of a better term….unnecessary. Yes, I know Megan Fox is hot and all but there was no other reason than that for her to be in the film. NONE of the human characters were really needed. The only one I can kind of understand (and I hate to say it) is Shia Lebeuf’s character, which actually drives what little of a story there is, forward. His parent’s obviously come back to provide comic relief. And although they do it well it is just unneeded.

The story goes as this and you shouldnt really worry about this being a spoiler as I doubt anyone really cares about the story. But since I have been known to be wrong, here is your SPOIER ALERT

The movie starts out with the Autobots being a part of a top secret new Special Forces unit with the U.S. Air Force named ‘Nest’ (stupid name). Their mission is to track down and eliminate the remaining Decepticons on Earth. At the same time, Sam (Shia Lebeuf), is preparing to go to college and  while he is packing discovers a piece of the All Spark that somehow got caught in the folds of his clothing. And, surprise surprise, it triggers a signal to the decepticons and once again young Sam is running for his life with Mikaela (Megan Fox) and Bumblebee at his side. But that is not all as the “fragment” also beams information into his head of an ancient Decepticon super weapon buried on earth that was lost thousands of years ago. So Megatron is brought back to life thanks to his evil band of robots and they  go after Sam so that they can learn where the said weapon is buried.  After a tussle with Optimus Prime’s gang of merry machines, Megatron flies out into space to a secret Decepticon based where we learn that old Megatron is actually taking orders from an ancient creature named The Fallen who was one of the first Cybertronians to ever visit Earth thousands of years ago. Long story short there is a big fight in Giza Egypt at the Great Pyramids. And yes, Devastator makes its grand appearnce and starts to lay waste as to be expected.

Its no secret that I hated the first film and I think Michael Bay is one of the biggest hacks in Hollywood right now. And this film didnt change my opinion one bit. The effects were great and you see loads of fighting robots and explosions. But the rest is horrible. Honestly I would prefer it if it was just done all CG and they cut the rest out.

To sum up…If you liked the last movie you will love this one.  But if you hated the last movie, like me, then you will probably hate this one also.

This is just my opinion an I am sure many will disagree. How did you like the film?

2 Hours of Non-sense with 30 minutes of good summer action.

  2. McMurphy on June 24th, 09

Unfortunately I totally agree with what Mr. Black has to say. I wanted this to be a much better movie then it really was. I feel like Bay was just trying to set up the best shots that he could and tried to let some story in every once and a while. It was entertaining, but it wasn't worth staying up to watch the midnight show.

  3. kal_el_of_ne00 on June 24th, 09

I'm torn. You can't go in to a transformers movie expecting to be blown away by the story, it's based of a childrens toy line after all. What really disappointed me was the two things that I was looking most forward to in this movie: the first was Soundwave, all the hype, even frank welker as the voice and he spends 2 plus hours humping a U.S. spy satellite and THATS IT. and the second is Jetfire. This guy is supposed to be as badass and awe inspiring as Optimus and Bay turned him into the comic relief as the cliche "cranky old guy" even making him use a giant cane when he walks around. What the crap? He just tried showing waaaaaaaaaaaaay to many characters. I was waiting for an explanation as to why Ratchet wasn't around then I caught a brief glimpse of him in 2 scenes and that was it. Sideswipe had pretty much the same amount of screen time. So when looking at it for being a movie based off of toys, I have to say they succeeded, but I was still disappointed by some of the characters, or lack thereof.

  4. Torch911 on June 24th, 09

The lack of Transformers was what really pissed me off here. Bay was jizzing himself that they added so many more bots, well, maybe for scenery. Sideswipe gets 15 seconds and my wife asked, "Didn't the silver car die in #1?" I asked my non-fanboy friends who the yellow ambulance was and none of them could remember even though we all watched the first one last night.
There are more plucky comic characters than action figures. We get the twins (lame), the parents (double lame), Mikala's pet Decepticon (I could almost hear Bay saying, "Everyone liked when Frenzy cussed, lets make a character for that!"), Agent Simmons, Jet Fire, the roommate, and the list goes on. Cheap laughs instead of time actually showing us…well…Transformers!

    ***spoilers***

Other things that annoyed me, we never really got a good perspective of how big Devastator was. He had to climb the pyramid which seemed a bit small for what Bay was promising. The R.C.s could have been a great addition to draw the gals in (because the R.C. figure was how we got the girls to play with us back in the day) but instead we got drawn through an idiotic romance that dragged on and on. If the Transformers can turn into humans, why would you choose anything else for infiltration?

All in all, I may actually enjoy G.I. Joe more than this because I know to go in expecting failure there.

I agree with both Mr. Black and tom up there. Yes, the movie is based off of a cartoon, that was based off of a line of toys. That's true, but at the same time, there have been some pretty good stories that have evolved from it, and the writers (same people who made "Fringe"? wtf?) didn't seem to take any of that into account. The movie had some cool parts, but overall, it just wasn't what it could have been had someone else who wasn't molested by an explosion when he was a child directed the film. Soundwave and the Twins were both disappointing. The "real" Twins from the comics were two Lamborghinis (if I remember correctly), Ravage was pretty decent although I think he was more dog than cat, but whatever. If you want a mindless action movie, then turn your brains off and enjoy. If you're a fan of the show/comics, just stay home and watch the animated movie/series on dvd.

  6. Jason on June 24th, 09

I misread kal_el's first sentence. I thought it said "tom", not "t-o-r-n". My bad :P

  7. phoenixprimus on June 24th, 09

By the standards of a by the numbers summer blockbuster . . . it was great. But everything you stated was accurate. Its really just a matter of what parts of a movie do you like and what mood you are in when you watch this movie. If you want robust dialog, depth of character, plot twists and a new look on the way we see society, DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. You will be greatly dissapointed. Pick up V for Vendetta. that being said, i loved it. I actually like typical summer movies.

  8. JesseMXGangl on June 24th, 09

I went into the movie having liked and enjoyed the first movie (seeing, acknowledging, and forgiving its many faults and flaws). I'd read all the bad press and internet nay-saying, but was determined to be "optimus-tic" and forgiving as I was with the first. Alas, I couldn't keep it up. There was too many things wretched elements too rapidly fired at me that my endurance wore thin and finally crumbled. Bay broke me, and I spent the last half hour not really enjoying myself because there was no way to redeem the asinine humor and vacuous, ghost of a plot. From what I understand, the prequel comics help with the story gaps quite a bit, but they simply cannot be required for enjoying the movie, and seem more like damage control for the devastating source material they had to work with.

I've been a long time Transformers fan, and a tolerant one, but there is still something sacred to me about the franchise and the concept. It's not Shakespeare, but it deserves some level of reverence and respect, which I simply didn't find here. For me, Transformers cannot be an "utterly mindless popcorn movie" and still be acceptable.

  9. Jay on June 24th, 09

I'll watch this movie with low expectations, as per the comments here. Really, it's to be expected: A bunch of action and explosions with a shitty, plotless script trying to be cutesy-but-actually-stupid with a bunch of giant personality-lite robots. If it's really that bad I'll just eventually download it.

  10. mudd86 on June 24th, 09

bla bla bla. It was a kick ass movie, with good humor good action and oh hell it was just good, i sat in ecstacy when the Transformers would come on screen. and besides you people are so negative it is bringing more people to the movies as Transformers fans that have never been before

  11. mudd86 on June 24th, 09

Jetfire is old even in the original cartoon, he was a exploerer with star scream, and he was with the Decepticons and then the autobots. oh and he dose die. so listen it was made for the general audience, and now a lot more people are Transformers fans. you can only have so many autobots and decepticons in a 2hour movie, watch the first 1986 animated film there was a small cast of robots in that as well, also i was so blown away by the story the fact that they look more alien is cool, sound wave was doing what he always has done and that is info and orders.

  12. mudd86 on June 24th, 09

The girl transformer was called a pretender, they were in the old cartoon.

  13. mudd86 on June 24th, 09

    poor baby.

  14. The Boogey Man on June 24th, 09

Alas, we have the summer movie conundrum to deal with yet again. A quick glance at this page tells me this. Die-hard fans will hate the movie because it doesn't fit their expectations. Newcomers and those with a casual interest will find something to enjoy. No director nowadays can make EVERYBODY happy when adapting a franchise to the big screen.

    What I liked…
    - Situational humor with the parents again.
    - Nice transformation sequences with the new transformers
    - Soundwave, RC, Jetfire, and Devastator brought into the story.
    - The fights weren't as blurry and indistinct as in the first movie.

    What I didn't like…
    - No voice modulation on Soundwave….wtf? That's part of his original coolness.
    - More giant robots, but almost no real introductions to the new additions.
    - Limited screen time to the ones who are already known or introduced, like Sideswipe.
    - Stereotyping the Twins' personalities…I'll be surprised if certain segments of society don't say anything on it.

Overall, I liked the movie. I'm a fan of the toy line and the original animated series, and I look at it the same way I looked at the LOTR movies (I'm a bigger fan of Tolkien, those works are sacred to me as a fan). When all is said and done, I never expected to see a live-action version of Transformers come to the big screen, and that alone makes me apt to overlook faults in a weak plot and the obvious catering to and enhancing of popular elements in the first film. I'm certain there will be a third, so there will be another chance for Bay or whoever directs it to see what worked and what didn't with this movie and fix it for the final act….which I pray includes Unicron.

  15. Jay on June 24th, 09

Wellll…I don't think it's too much to ask for a meaningful plot and uncheesy dialogue, which I think is the issue being brought up here. I mean, c'mon now, which is more costly, a plot or special effects? But, perhaps, we may all be forgetting that these movies are, in fact, aimed toward a very young (i.e., children) demographic…unfortunately for the rest of us.

  16. Robrowboski on June 24th, 09

this movie sucks Bay is Shit and this one is worse than the first one frankly I don't think transformers is that great of an idea for A movie anyway

  17. synsei on June 25th, 09

These comments were the nail in the proverbial coffin. There was a .005% chance that I'd go see this movie but even that has dwindled. I'm a childhood fan and all I ever wanted was too see a live action/ CG Transformers film. The first movie was ok at best, but at least it satisfied my desire to see the Transformers on the big screen. Now, honestly, the novelty of it all has faded and the dilution of the franchise has begun.

  18. Ishyca on June 25th, 09

…. I really like the movie and I must admit that I am not a original transformer fan. it is the same with harry potter, each people have their own concept of the original story and the director cannot always pick up ideas from billion and billion of people around the globe and summery it into 2 hour movie. the important thing is to enjoy what they create, may it be totally different from the original, admire the beauty it has because it is part of imagination of someone else. knowing that the first movie already did not correspond to the original should have warn you fans of this possibility happening in the second. so your guys' accusations is completely worthless, since your guys kind just insult my point of view and others who like the movie because they are open minded instead of wishing for some changes. so if someone out there just want a honest opinion on the movie, it was really entertaining, but check the first and like it before you waste your movie on this and blame it on Michal Bay( a really good director) and insulting others.

  19. deathsauce on June 25th, 09

i hated that i finally get to see SOUNDWAVE but he just orbits the earth, hacked into a satellite. never going down to actually fight at all.

also: a big part of the movie felt like a glorified army-navy-airforce-marines trailer.

  20. deathsauce on June 25th, 09

also: the TWINS seemed like racial stereotypes.

  21. Torch911 on June 25th, 09

All of Michael Bay movies are great recruiting tools.

…and I'm in no way anti-military or recruiting, just pointing out.

  22. ctsamurai on June 26th, 09

I really could care less about another Transformers film and this review sealed it that I will not see this film.

  23. kal_el_of_ne00 on June 26th, 09

They couldve shown Jetfires age and frailty without making him a "cranky grandpa" joke. and Soundwave was more than just a stationary character. they both should've been treated better by the movie writers.

  24. kal_el_of_ne00 on June 26th, 09

and something else Mcmurphy and I noticed when we saw this movie, the editing at the end was horrible. I really wanted to like this movie but after devastator has formed and clearly destroying the pyramid you also see Mixmaster and Longhaul as individuals fighting the military. plus I also thought there was another flaw with the backhoe Optimus kills at beginning and it still being part of devastator later, but I did some research and apparently if you read the novelization of the movie you learn that two decepticons; Demolisher (one killed at beginning) and Scavenger (backhoe that's part of devastator) pick the exact same vehicle mode and color scheme so they are apparently twins even more then skids and mudflap. and the helicoptor isn't Blackout, it's another new decepticon named Grindor, which is never explained to audience either just leading to confusion all over the place.

  25. spiralpoison on June 27th, 09

I loved the first movie, but totally agree that there is no plot and actually found myself bored halfway through this one.

The fight scenes were good, but not enough to make up for the lack of any sort of plot!

  26. jiggawatt79 on June 28th, 09

why do people expect action movies to be like no country for old men? it was funny and entertaining, that is all.

  27. kal_el_of_ne00 on June 28th, 09

SPOILER ALERT!! ok after having seen it a second time. I will say my only MAJOR gripe is this. The editing of the final battle. Because after devastor has formed and climbing the pyramid, they switch back and forth between this and clearly seeing Longhaul, Mixmaster, Rampage, and Scrapper chasing Sam and Mikela and getting destroyed various ways. Both of these events appear to happen AT THE SAME TIME. So if you can just keep in mind that everything that happens to Sam and Mikela could only logically happen after Devastator is seperated, then the ending can make sense. Oh and the joke they made Jetfire into still bugs me. But I just can't see how Bay and the editors were able to twist up the ending so bad. They HAD to have noticed it and just hoped that no one else did.

  28. Mike Anderson on June 28th, 09

Not very good, and was I the only one that got dizzy 10 times throughout the movie. That was a lot of circling of characters/scenery.

  29. Shadownlite on June 28th, 09

I have heard nothing but bad things about this movie. I was not impressed by the firts one. This one will be a rental for me if even bother to rent it.

  30. Jay on June 29th, 09

But the question on all of our minds — those of us who haven't seen the movie yet — is there enough toe thumb?
