UNNECESSARY REMAKE ALERT : LET THE RIGHT ONE IN

This is complete and utter blasphemy. First of all the movie is barely a year old so what is the point? Apparently its not necessarily going to be a remake per se, but an “Americanized” adaptation of the novel by author John Ajvide Lindqvist, which means it will probably suck. The film is being produced by Overture films and directed by Matt Reeves who you may remember as the guy who brought us a little monster movie named CLOVERFIELD.

Here is my rant time…… First of all. THERE IS NO NEED TO MAKE AN AMERICAN VERSION OF THIS FILM!!!! The Swedish version is perfection. It is quite possibly the greatest Vampire film ever made. And I have seen MANY MANY movies about vampires. This just seems like a spit in the face to cast and crew of the ORIGINAL Swedish film. I just don’t understand why studios and production companies need to Americanize foreign films. Apparently the love of money has won out over the love of art and storytelling. I know what you are thinking, this is all sounding incredibly negative and harsh and fair enough, they haven’t even made it yet. But that’s kind of my point is that they shouldn’t make it. They should just leave it as is. Let The Right One In is fantastic in all of its Swedish majesty. I just don’t think it will be as good of movie if it is remade.

If you have never heard of Let The Right One In, then let me give you a summary;
Let The Right One In or Låt Den Rätte Komma In, (the official name), is about a 12 year old boy named Oskar who is constantly being bullied at school. Eli is a new girl that moves in next door, who Oskar only sees at night. As their relationship grows, Oskar realizes that Eli is no normal girl and that she needs to drink blood to survive. Despite their differences they begin to fall in love and Eli helps Oskar find the strength to deal with life. The story is set near Stockholm in 1982. The American version is rumored to take place in Colorado during the Reagan years.

Mark Reeves talked to The L.A. Times and says:
There’s definitely people who have a real bull’s-eye on the film and I can understand because of people’s’ love of the [original] film that there’s this cynicism that I’ll come in and trash it, when in fact I have nothing but respect for the film. I’m so drawn to it for personal and not mercenary reasons, my feeling about it is if I didn’t feel a personal connection and feel it could be its own film, I wouldn’t be doing it. I hope people give us a chance
I’m sorry but that doesn’t make any sense to me. There are millions of people out there with a personal connection to Star Wars or Casablanca but its not a good enough reason to remake those or any films. I find it very hard to believe that he, or anyone for that matter, would even consider doing a remake that is so emotionally sentimental to them. If you love it so much…why would you mess with it? As you can see I also have a “personal connection” with the film. But i would never support a re-whatever of it. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike the guy or his directing style, I actually really liked Cloverfield its just some movies (more than others) should never be remade. The American version of the film has also apparently been renamed Let Me In.
You can also read a previous interview about all of this here.
I for one will obviously not see the new “version” of the film. I highly suggest you go out and watch the original Swedish version and I beg you to not give into the American version.
Ok, rant over….for now.

The Departed is a remake of a Chinese or Japanese movie(I cant rememberr which) that was only 2 or 3 years old at he time. As long as it is done well and is a good movie why not. Besides Subtitles suck ass and the can be destracting and dubbing is really fucking annoying.
subtitles don't suck ass. there is NO reason to remake this film. it was incredible and the fact that it wasn't in english added to it.
I completely agree. There are a lot of great movies people miss because they don't want to read subtitles.
Word. Foreign films are usually the best ones out there, because unlike America, they're willing to think outside of boxes to come up with something new.
And for the record, The Departed is a remake of Infernal Affairs (a Hong Kong film).
Spoorloos (one of the greatest horror films of all time) became the insipid and chicken-shit 'The Vanishing'.
REC (one of the most disturbingly brilliant films ever) became the soft-stooled 'Quarantine'.
Oldboy – christ it's getting remade with Will Smith in the lead.
Now this (amongst other great foreign films) is about to get a celluloid fisting.
No disrespect to the first poster – but they sum up the reason why these films get remade – we're too f**king lazy to read a decent film.
Makes me sick.
Its no wonder America is so insular.
Wow, I totally love the passion, but in truth beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just because a vast majority of Americans would probably prefer an americanized version (go figure) doesn't mean they're stupid or that it's any less of a good film.
I totally agree with you. It would be an insult to remake this movie especially americanized. The characters Eli and Oskar will probably end up as toys in happy meals at mcdonalds. This movie is a masterpiece. Don't ruin it. I felt so torn with Eli. She is a vampire and kills for blood on one hand but on the other hand she does good and helps Oskar. And I felt so bad that she, a 12 year old couldn't do anything about her curse. I live in America and I know what they can do to ruin a good movie. I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel though, what happens to Oskar and Eli after the train ride??? To american movie makers that think they can do better??? Leave well enough alone!!!!!
Can Hollywood not come out with something original?!? To me it's almost like a slap in the face to the makers of Let the Right One In. "We're gonna remake your movie because we think we can make it better." Yeah, good luck with that…
I agree, I can’t find any good explanation to do a remake of this movie, the culture differences are what make this film more interesting, and those kids did a very good job.
Shame to those who decided to do this…
I loved the movie I wish they make a PART TWO which goes more into Eli's past life.
