An Angry Letter About THE CROW Remake

Dear Mr Norrington

I am a huge fan of the graphic novel that James O’Barr has created as well as the film that Alex Proyas directed so I have one thing to say to you… HOW DARE YOU! How dare you sir attempt at doing a remake of my ALL TIME MOST FAVORITE FILM. How dare you spit in the face of fans of The Crow. How dare you piss all over the grave of Brandon Lee, who died during filming. Brandon Lee, the man who played the part of Eric Draven so well and so perfectly that James O’barr himself said “Brandon Lee WAS Eric Draven”.

You claim to be a fan of The Crow. You claim to do something new so it doesnt disrespect the original film. But the mere fact that you think you could do better is a massive disrespect to the film. The fact that you want to redo it is an insult to the production of the movie as well as all those involved in it. The fact that you want to change the story so it is darker and grittier shows that you never truly liked the film to begin with. It shows that you think you could do better.

As a die-hard fan of The Crow, I simply cannot fathom the audacity in anyone remaking the movie. And you sir have made no movie that could even come close to the greatness of the original Alex Proyas masterpiece. I have seen Blade and I have seen The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (both of which are also comic book adaptations) and in all honesty I do not see how you will be able to pull off a darker, grittier version of The Crow.

I would have little issue with your project if it was a film set in the same universe but with a different character, but the fact that you want to re-invent Eric Draven is a massive dishonor. There are other stories in the universe that should be made into movies before a remake. For example “Dead Time” or “Flesh and Blood”.

Obviously I will not see your film and I seriously doubt any true Crow fans will either.

A very pissed off geek,
Mr Black

P.s. I will do the best I can to urgeĀ  people everywhere to NOT see your film.

unless they shoot the actor that plays the crow with a real bullet, there is no way i see this movie

  2. SerratedGrin on July 8th, 09

Saying that a remake of The Crow is a horrid insult simply doesn't cut it. There are no words in any language in the Universe that can describe how loathsome it is to commit something so un-inspired, unnecessary and unwanted as a Crow remake. The sequels were terrible enough, for fuck's sake!

  3. Jay on July 8th, 09

Yeah, but then watch it get the "Batman Begins"-type remake, and it'll be awesome and everyone will love it.

  4. OrangeRush2112 on July 7th, 09

someone should rewrite mr blacks letter and then resubmit it in trilogy form.

  5. Deadfool on July 7th, 09

Forget the bleepin remake. What they really need, is to focus on cloning Brandon Lee. Or study some dark arts to resurrect him. (no pun intended)

  6. Mr. Black on July 7th, 09

    lmao

  7. knox on July 8th, 09

always interested to see what they could do with more money time will tell

Um, chill out. It was a great movie, and I'm sure this one will suck, but it's not like YOU wrote the book, wrote the screenplay, or made the first movie.

And to be fair, it has its corny moments, but it's a classic to be sure.

The saddest part about Brandon's passing is the fat-girl hot topic culture that slathers bacon grease and faux-sentimentality all over his memory every chance they get. Your all stupid, and probably fat too.

    Homos.

    Tell 'em Steve-Dave!

  10. Timx13 on July 8th, 09

Relax, Mr. Black. They're not hunting down the original film and erasing it from existence. It'll still be there.

Where was all this vitriol when they made those awful sequels and TV shows…?

  11. chingpea on July 8th, 09

I'm a huge fan of "The Crow" and the movie – whether people think cheesy or classic – has a lot of sentimental value to me. Not only was I crazy for the great Brandon Lee, I was going through an emotional and physical time in my life and the movie inspired me to keep going.

Re-make or no remake, there's never going to be another Brandon Lee. I'll admit, I'd see the remake for no other reason than curiosity but the original will always have a place in my heart.

    Hey Ann,

Uhm.. wow. That was rettible arrogant, ignorant and moronic. Head of the class!

    Kevin
AKA: A straight guy who can still appreciate Brandon Lee for his artistic, activing, and martial arts abilities. Asshat.

    To Mr. Black,

    Word

  14. R.T. on July 8th, 09

Yawn. Brandon Lee was in how many movies total?

Does dick-riding of the dead count as necrophilia?

Im sure the movie will be exactly waht everyone expects it to be. But its not like anyones pissing on the dead here. How many remakes of A Crhistmas Carol are there? And who gets their patnies in a bunch about that? LOTS of movies get remade and most not for the better.

The difference here is that most of those movies haven't wound up hanging shirts in hot topic or making fat girls wet and inspiring the worst halloween costumes ever.

    Thumbs down, Mr. Black.

Also, it's really arrogant that you think you have a right to even TALK about this. The only right you ahve to this movie is maybe being EMOTIONALLY invested in it–but if your that invested in it, that's just really, really lame.

Find something better to do. DE-followed.

I, personally, am excited about this. It can't be worse than the Ed Furlong pile of donkey shit.

  18. Ronda V. on July 31st, 09

VERY WELL SAID!!!!!!!!!!!! I THINK I COULD NOT HAVE DONE BETTER..

I have written James O'barr about this..and I think he seriously does not care..or he wouldnt be letting this happen….and have not gotten a letter back from him. I am going to write him again..and over and over til i get a reply back from him…explaining to me why he of all people is letting this happen.

I URGE ALL YOU CROW FANS TO NOT GO SEE THIS FILM…AND ENCOURAGE ALL OTHER FANS TO NOT SEE THIS FILM.

  19. Not gonna say on August 7th, 09

Just an FYI. Mr O'Barr cares very much about what is happening but has no say in the matter. The film rights to the franchise are not his. He still owns the publishing rights but the studio owns the film rights. The Studio approached him wanting to use his name for the movie but he declined after being offered an insulting paycheck and no creative input what so ever.

  20. ven on August 13th, 09

It might be a good movie if he does the "realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style" based more off the graphic novel rather a remake the 1994 film. However, it probably not.
