The Gen X Director

I grew up watching Wes Craven movies, John Carpenter movies, George Romero movies, Stephen Spielberg movies, George Lucas movies, Robert Zemeckis movies, Tim Burton movies and I could probably think of a few more. I read an article a while back and it was about the death of horror and scifi. Well, this got me stirred up a little and now I have to vent. These movies are the blockbusters we all enjoy catching at the local theater and are what keeps the video stores kicking! The guy who wrote this is a professional critic, he’s also one of the critics who said Transformers 2 would bomb! How’d this guy get his job? Can I have his job? My batting average is better!

After enjoying 3 to 4 decades of movies from all of these great, legendary directors it did seem there was a gap in generations of new directors coming to the fore-front….Until now!

I saw this cool movie back in 2006 called “Slither” and I can’t tell you how many times me and my friends have sat around and watched this fun throwback to the 80’s kind of horror movie from director James Gunn . He also has PG Porn videos he does with certain actors and these videos just own me! They are shorts that are crazy hilarious!

Adam Green has introduced us to a new horror icon named Victor Crowley from the movie Hatchet. Adam has already cranked out another cool ass movie called “Spiral” and has “Frozen” coming out in the fall and also produced the much publicized “Grace” that will be out in limited release in August 14th(New York and Los Angeles). He has a cool Star Wars fan short at Comic Con this year called “Saber” that totally rocks! Check it out!

Joe Lynch directed one of my new favorites, Wrong Turn 2 . So be on the watch for more of his work!

Hey Mr. Critic, have you ever heard of Eli Roth? This guy brought us Cabin Fever and the two Hostel movies.

Steve Miller brought us “Automaton Transfusion” back in 2006 and was one of the best zombie movies I’d seen in years and I think he did it on a $30,000 budget! It’s the first of a zombie trilogy he’s working on. Be on the lookout in 2010 for “Automaton Transfusion:Contingency” This guy has a long promising future ahead of him!

Now to Michael Dougherty and what I consider the most anticipated, long delayed horror flick of the year, “Trick ‘R Treat”. This movie has been on the shelf for a guess close to three years. I hear Warner is to blame but I’m not sure, all I know someone is to blame, probably some suit and tie sitting behind a desk and so unaware what the public and fan base want it’s a shame. Michael Dougherty not only is one of our directors of the future but is a solid artist! The guy has an awesome imagination so be sure to check out his art work!

Honorable mentions are McG, we all have watched his music videos and now he’s moved to the big screen with movies like Charlies Angels and the recent Terminator:Salvation. Darren Bousman who has brought us “Saw 2,3 and 4”and the upcoming “Mother’s Day”. Samuel Bayer who also came from the music video days is bringing us the newly revamped “A Nightmare On Elm Street” starring Jackie Earle Haley as the NEW Freddy Krueger, I think we’ll all be in line for this one! And last but certainly not least Jon Favreau, this actor/director has given us the birth of the Iron Man franchise and will be bringing us part 2 next summer! I can’t wait. Jon also is probably one of the nicest guys in the industry, he deserves all the success coming his way! Oh yeah, let throw Chris Nolan in this list too.

I think I’ve made my point here Mr. Critic, where do you get your facts you old fart? These guys here are keeping movie going alive and well! The Gen X director is alive and well and is cranking the movies we love out as fast as I can type this out. It’s great you have your cushy job, sitting there criticizing people work and getting half of your predictions and reviews all wrong! The latest being Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,

wow you really missed that one bonehead! Now it may not be the strongest story and I realize that but remember it’s made for kids, not you Mr. Critic! The fans have spoken and proved you wrong, again!

I’m a movie lover through and through and I know I’ve left out a few names but I could just keep it going with this. I love the old school director’s and I look forward to the newer generation director’s work for a long, long time to come. With this being said and getting this out I’m feeling a lot better now so I think I’ll go catch a flick Mr. Critic!
