What the Hell? G.I. JOE: RISE OF COBRA is Getting Positive Reviews

c223ff5d67poster

I have to say, I am pretty shocked to see all of the positive reviews coming out on the Stephen Sommers film G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. All the footage I have scene from the film just make the movie look ridiculous. The action, the comedy, the script, story and dialogue have been crap in my eyes. To Me it looks like they ruined everything about G.I. Joe that I loved. And here we we have people saying how awesome it is! Is there a chance that a person like myself who has been a fan of the G.I. Joe pretty much his whole life, is going to actually enjoy a movie that he thinks looks like crap? Well, here is what people are saying around the net.

Devin from CHUD:

Stephen Sommers’ GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra manages to almost perfectly replicate the experience you had as a pre-teen playing with your action figures in the back yard. Like a kid banging his toys together and blowing them up with firecrackers, Sommers has made a movie that’s just a series of action set pieces strung together with a minimal amount of exposition, stopping only to catch his breath and to move the story along far enough to get to the next action set piece. And damn if it doesn’t work… If I was 10 years old, GI Joe would be one of the best movies I had ever seen. As a grown up it’s one of the better summer movies; a delightfully light, fun and action-packed kick in the ass.

George from Latino Review:

How it relates to the cartoon: First off, if you liked the cartoon, this is the live action version of the cartoon. I had all the figures, the vehicles, the aircraft carrier, everything when I was a kid growing up. This movie is exactly how I imagined it would be when I was playing with these figures. Kids are going to love this flick. Why the hell couldn’t this have been made when I was 9 years old? I’m so jealous of you little bastards who get to see this through the eyes of a child. You are going to love it.

Cobra: I don’t think there’s a nice way to put this, but here goes – everyone in Cobra is a fucking asshole. There is such a blatant disregard for human life in this film. There must have been thousands of innocent people who died as a result of Cobra’s actions.

G.I. Joe: Wow. Even the Joes were impressive. They had a mission to stop the bad guys and that’s what they tried to do. Scarlett, played by Rachel Nichols, was the scene stealer. Who knew G.I. Joe had such sex appeal? I could have watched an entire movie that just featured her. Channing Tatum was great as Duke and Dennis Quaid seemed to be enjoying his role as Hawk. The Joes kicked a lot of ass, but they also got their ass handed to them a lot. Ray Park at times, looked uncomfortable in the suit, especially when running. But he was great as well. Hawk is no match for Storm Shadow though…

The action: Absolute chaos. The action is non stop. I had no idea that the movie was filled with so many action and stunt sequences. The first one, where Duke and Ripcord are escorting a convoy only to be attacked by a mysterious gunship, was so much fun to watch. The explosions are everywhere in this, the hand to hand fight scenes are up close and rough, and people die like crazy in this picture. Arrows to the head, ninja stabs through the chest, laser blasts to the face, you name it, they do it.

Harry From AICN:

I was expecting this movie to be far more jokey, tons of cheese and really serious eye-rolling while groaning. Instead, what I got was a fairly straight adaptation of the script, which I always thought would work as a serviceable all-ages GI JOE movie. Although, this is a bit more violent than I was expecting. Blades can cut, death does happen in this universe, but it isn’t anything out of whack with the rating. I don’t believe there’s any foul language – and all flirtation is kept in very good tastes (ahem, BAY!)

In my opinion this is a vastly superior adaptation than either of the TRANSFORMERS movies. For one, this really is a GI JOE story, not a story of a teenager with grandpa’s glasses. Here, the world is in peril in a coherent way. It isn’t just MEGATRON on a building screaming insults at a boy. But these bad guys, they seriously want to rule the world, not give life to Mountain Dew machines.

So there you have it! Positive feedback from a film that looks like crap. After reading all of these positive reviews, I am a bit more excited to see it. I still have my doubt’s but who knows, maybe this movie I have been bashing on for so long will end up proving me wrong. What do you think?

    must not…watch…anything with…wayans…in it…arrrghh
After the recent blitz of comercials in the last week or so, it does look kinda cool. Geez AICN has a hard on for bashing bay, I cant stand that site anymore.

Fantastic Movie,, I loved the script and entirely too excited to see the movie

These reviews probably spawn from many critics urge to give bad reviews to movies expected to be good and vice-versa. The first review could practically be applied to Transformers as well. These days many critics like to pretend that only they can see the 'art' in movies, and that as a movie goer, we can't establish what is a good movie. GI Joe however, looks like a pretty cheesy movie, but I can't speak on it because I haven't seen it.

I wonder how much these people were paid to say that. Devin from CUHD said " . . . Sommers has made a movie that’s just a series of action set pieces strung together with a minimal amount of exposition, stopping only to catch his breath and to move the story along far enough to get to the next action set piece. And damn if it doesn’t work… " I think someone wrote the same thing about The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing. All this movie needs is some damn helpless kid (Dakota Fanning) screaming their head off because the evil bad Cobra Commander stole her friggin balloon. And might I also add I've seen the action figures. Cobra Commander is lame. Give me 30 Million dollars and I'll make a GI Joe movie the fans want . . .

Sorry but that fool at Latino Review said Hawk when he clearly ment Snake Eyes and that alone is enough for me to disregard everything he said

  6. Texaschainsawjr on July 31st, 09

All you fan boys just need to shut up because clearly they have made it for an audience that is new to gi joe or isnt to familar to it. It will probably do great because of kids wanting to see it and you all know you are gonna watch it eventually.

I completely disagree. I think this GI Joe movie looks amazing. That first Superbowl commercial took my breath away so I think you're wrong when you say it ruins the original GI Joe concept. I just think it takes the original concept and makes it bad ass. And I also have to make another stand here: I liked Transformers 2. It was not as horrible as everyone is making it out to be. Dare I say it?… Michael Bay did an ok job.

  8. superme524 on July 31st, 09

Fanboy? Hey I resemble that remark. But allow everyone to express their opinion. The movie will do ok because of kids wanting to see it. But that about it. If they wanted the movie to do great Stephen Sommers should have realized that the parents will want to see it even more. I would be surprised if a die hard GI Joe fan, or even a real fan will be able to relate with this movie.

  9. D wright on July 31st, 09

My GI Joe's were 12 inches tall and fought Nazis, so really don't care about this movie one way or another.

  10. danof89 on July 31st, 09

Wish I was still a toy designer w/a piece of this thing. Licensing will be through the roof.BUT, it still looks like a big pile of cow flops. I concur w/ D wright. The puny little action figures and cartoons came in to vogue somewhere in my late adolescence. My GI Joe's would have nothing to do with the Wayans clan. This just seems too Starship Troopers 3 to me.(never saw it,just mean the concept)Can't they just come out w/ a Stetch Armstrong Movie and get it over with? Is no one in Hollyweird looking at my scripts?

    Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! ?

  12. mappleby05 on July 31st, 09

A slight glimmer of hope for this maybe? I hope it's all true, but I won't be convinced until I see it for myself.

  13. BluInkAlchemist on July 31st, 09

I'm going to wait until more reputable critics weigh in. AICN doesn't mean as much as it used to, at least to me.

  14. Torch911 on July 31st, 09

Oh dear, can't have any hope! If I stay disappointed I can enjoy it with my nephew. If I expect something good it'll rip my heart out like Transformers 2.

  15. cclifton45 on July 31st, 09

I never agree with critics anyway, so im not holding my breath on this one

  16. InfiniteMonkey on July 31st, 09

Most definitely going to watch this…when its free on someone else's tele when it comes out on DVD. LOL!

  17. groonk on July 31st, 09

Meh. Believe it when I see it. That won't be anytime soon btw.

  18. Mollie Smith on August 1st, 09

I am a fan of both mov ies and GI Joe. I am an independent thinker who can come up with their own decision on whether or not a film is good or not and I do not need critics to tell me what to think…. With this being said I am so stoked about seeing this movie because I grew up with the GI joe Cartoon and comics. I was a tomboy when I was growing up and I had the privilage of having a Army and Navy store in my family so I got to play with all the cammo and stuff, But my parents did not let me play with the knieves or hatchets. YO Joe!

  19. ShaftInferno on August 2nd, 09

    You mean "resent," but whatever.

I personally think the movie will generate a massive pull, only for those expecting a cheese-fest and possibly being quite satisfied.

Compared to some movies coming out, I think I'd actually pay to see GI Joe.

  20. superme524 on August 2nd, 09

Actually "cheese-fest" I meant resemble. It's a play on words. But whatever, right?

  21. ShaftInferno on August 2nd, 09

Yeah, whatever. Enjoy the resemblance. ;)

  22. Scarecrobot on August 19th, 09

To those who haven't seen the movie- Your opinion is worthless…for obvious reasons. You can't base a movie on its trailer. Of course the movie is not going to be 100% accurate to the original, but that doesn't mean it's going to be bad.

It looks like cool, fun, enjoyable movie to me and I plan on seeing it ASAP…which brings me to my next point…

You should actually WATCH THE FUCKIN' MOVIE before you tear it a new asshole. (And that goes for ANY movie.)

  23. mighty_thor on August 22nd, 09

All this negativity over a movie? Let's get this straight, based on the trailer you think it will ruin YOUR concept of G.I. Joe, and you are actually surprised that other people actually like it? What is the whole point in hating on the movie even before you have seen it? As a fan of G.I. Joe your "whole life", i would assume that you will try to support the movie, or at the very least, not trash it. I do not expect anyone to praise something which they didn't like, but what would it accomplish to lambaste a film which you haven't even seen, and that you are a fan of? How is that even constructive? I respect the right of everyone to free speech and self expression, but, like everything else in life, such right should be exercised responsibly. Trying to make shots at a movie you haven't even seen is not only irresponsible, it's lame.
