Confirmed: Bryan Singer will Direct BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Movie

Yesterday we reported on the possibility that Bryan Singer would produce the new Battlestar Galactica movie that is being developed over at Universal Pictures. We weren’t sure if he would end up directing it or not, but today Entertainment Weekly has confirmedĀ that Bryan Singer will in fact direct the new Battlestar Galactica film. So he will be both producing and directing.
The movie will not continue the story of the recent series that just finished its run on the SyFy channel, but it will be a complete re-imagining of the classic 1970’s series.
I’m interested to see what Singer has in store for this movie. He recently directed the Tom Cruise film Valkyrie, and is a decent director. The movie will definitely have that Hollywood polish that everyone of his films has had, after The Usual Suspects. I hope they are able to put together a good solid story, they need to. I think it will be hard for them to top what the SyFy channel has done with the franchise, that really set the bar for me. In the end, there are going to be fans of the show disappointed in this movie. Bryan Singer has put himself in the position once again to get crapped on by rabid fans. For the record, I liked what he did with X-Men, but hated what he did with Superman.
So what do you think about Singer directing Galactica?

Oh no, how about a good original science fiction movie for a change. The new BSG was fantastic, but I doubt we'll be that lucky with a third version.
I think Singer will do a good job provided he can put interesting spin on it. I mean.. this will be the 3rd iteration of this. How many times can a show be revamped? Btw… I don't know what you mean about Superman? – That was a great job!
Seems like an obvious ploy to cash in on both the re-imagined TV show and the success of the Star Trek reboot. I'm with Phil how about something new.
Singer's Superman owed to much to the first two Reeves movies, and really only added a super baby to the mix, which i think limits the character, since we dont have a real modern movie interpretaion of what it is to be Superman and Clark Kent. We never really got a complete Superman/Lois Lane relationship arc. It would have been a better focus than the fractured state that Superman Returns started with. And again, the main issue that any superman movie has to deal with, a credible villian that doesnt need to rely on depowering superman. It was pretty to look at, but was to overlong, felt to beholden to yet another lame Luthor land grab. It would have been for them to actually make Luthor more credible. Hell by the time Supes returns Lex Luthor could have been president, now that would have been a much better arc to explore.
Oh boy, Bryan Singer at the helm of a new iteration of BattleStar Galactica…hmmm. I wouldn't pay a bloody dime for this shite.
i watched the original tv show as a kid and loved it – i thought the new series had promise – but the fuk'd up acting and crap writing really lost me. would rather see one that had all the elements of the old series updated for our time.
After what Bryan did to Superman in Superman Return, he should have his card removed.
I agree. Travesty that one. So much money down the drain.
Hold on, you think the old series had better acting and better writing than the new series??? Wow. You, my friend need to raise your standards and get a clue in terms of acting and writing. Poor, poor, you. lol.
Ditto x 10. His "re-imagining(s)" are nothing more than pale imitations of the originals.
Why do we need a new BSG? It was just re-imaged and I don't see why we need yet another version.
Directors need to take a cue form District 9 and make an original sci fi story. They are getting damn lazy in "re-imaging" tv shows, old movies, and comics over and over.
…………………………………………………………..
agreed
Really! On top of that, it cost way less than most of the tragic rubbish movies out there. LOL!
why dont they re-imagine something awesome like airwolf, or lucan, or tj hooker??? or how about too close for comfort??? damn you, damn you all to hell!
It would definitely give him a big opportunity to do something more serious science-fiction flick for a change. Singer (Bryan) is perfect choice to take helm. Basically, the original does require updated though. Cant wait to see it first a sneek preview.
I'd pay money to see his version of Galactica. Especially if it's a re-imagining of the original from the 70s. I used to watch it as a kid and enjoyed it. Despite the fact it was cheesy and they used tons of stock footage for the SPFX it was fun, melodramatic and you could tell that the actors had fun with it.
I watched the the Sci-Fi (Scfy?) version of BSG. I did enjoy the show but it started getting to angsty and depressing. The storyline was interesting enough and the visual effects were cool but wow! Angst doesn't equal drama.
As for Singer; I think he did well with the X-Men movies and Superman Returns (despite it's flaws) wasn't too bad for what it was. I think he'll do fine with it and it'll be interesting to see what they come up with.
Just my 2 cents.
After the craptastic craptacular ending that Moore gave us for the Sci-Fi (I refuse their new name) series, I feel he's lost all rights to the franchise. That ending was so absolutely horrible I've lost my taste for the show and would welcome a talented director like Singer to take a swing at this. My only complaint is that this must make it 150% certain he won't get to continue his vision for Superman, which is truly a crime.
Because Ron Moore jumped the shark/Nuked the Fridge on the Show Finale of BSG. That was such an insulting pile of putrid turd that I was offended. I was a huge proponent of that show, constantly telling everyone that would listen how it was simply the best show on television, and then he delivered that sloppy, ill-conceived waste of time.
After that ending, the fans deserve a new and fresh take of that franchise.
Singer's stated motivation in Superman Returns was to wrap-up the original Donner films of Superman The Movie and Superman II. It was his intention all along to make the movie that owed a great deal to the original two and then his second was to be a high energy action hero piece with villians worth of Superman. People act like it was a failure but global receipts totaled more than 300million. It's a crime he didn't get to continue his vision because the studio lacks brains or vision.
I understand Singer's intent, I just didn't feel it was appropriate to start a new franchise, with new actors, by being a continuation of a previous set of movies. That is one of the reasons i didn't like it as much as i wanted too. It should have been a Batman Begins type of reboot, so that the series isn't beholden to movies made decades back. And since those older flicks are the late Christopher Reeves movies, it isn't fair to Brandon Routh, that he pretty much had to be Reeves, more than his own version of Superman. Like I said it is a nice looking movie, it just should not have been a sequel to movies that ran their course.
