Possible DISTRICT 9 Sequel? – Neill Blomkamp talks

district9poster
Neill Blomkamp
has just delivered one of my all time favorite movies and quite possibly the best movie of the year (in my opinion). District 9 was a masterpiece on epic proportions. I loved everything about the film. I found nothing wrong with it at all. The story was solid as were the acting, effects, and everything else for that matter. But I have already written a review and you can read it here.

District 9 writer/director Neill Blomkamp and actor Sharlto Coply (Wikus Van De Merwe) recently talked to Fangoria about a possible District 9 sequel. Here is what Neill told Fangoria

I’d love to make a sequel, because it’s so creatively rewarding to me; there’s just something about [the story]. It’s my background mixed with the science fiction that I loved. I’d really like to go back to the world of DISTRICT 9—which, without Sharlto’s character, would be a very different kind of movie. So I think automatically the two of us will be reunited again, should the public decide that this film is something they want to see and it’s successful.

The film has grossed over 37 million in the box office which is more than was spent to make it. The film had the incredible budget of only 30 million dollars and it looks like they spent 5 times that amount. It just proves that big budget does not equal great film. I for one would love to see a sequel, assuming that they all return to work on it and that they try to keep a similar feel to it.

I could talk about District 9 all day but what do you think? Do you want to see a sequel?

this movie was incredible and i would love to see what blomkamp will do with a sequel!

They would have to bring Wikus back, seriously. The plot, as hinted in the movie: Christopher does come back, with "friends", to save his people and in the process cause large-scale mayhem.

I'd like to see a sequel but if it doesn't happen I won't be too bummed about it…. the story can end here and thats fine I liked how it ended.

I absolutely loved this movie, as well, and would love to see a sequel. I really want to know what happened to Christopher after he left and learn more about the alien culture and origins.

I would love to see a second movie they left it in place where a sequel makes sense and not something forced or just trying to make a quick buck based on the first.
    District 10 the return?

I could see this taking shape into the next great franchise ala Alien

I’m against a sequel, because I feel like it doesn’t NEED one. Look at the success of the first Matrix movie, and how they screwed it up by making sequels! I say let this spectacular movie stand in it’s own and let the viewers imagine their own sequels!

i agree oddly with everything everyone so far has posted. they could leave it alone and i would be satisfied. but the movie was such that i could have kept watching it go on and on. great all around movie making – you dont see that much anymore. i sort of knew what to expect from this website but i didnt know what direction it was going to go – and for me it was an awesome roller coaster i didnt want to get off. by far one of the best sci fi movies (at least for me) since the matrix. george clusterfuck lucas should take some notes here.

Loved this flick on it's own, but was left thinking about the plot and what happens next for days … so I'd be very keen to see the sequel where they pick up in District 10 and Christopher returning. Keep it interesting and not typical Hollywood and it will remain a winner I think.

Yes definitely a sequel. Just don't go bloody all Hollywood on its benders. Bad enough that Hollywood is putting their stamp on rubbish now a days. Note to Neill Blomkamp, stay in New Zealand with Peter Jackson and just make it there. Don't come to Hollywood. Big money will rot your senses and then the sequel will be bollocks!

    agreed

In all fairness some sequels are as good if not better that the first part. Just look at The Dark Knight.

I think if it has the right team with the right control and the right intentions it could turn out fine. I just hope they keep the same feel as D9 if they do in fact do a sequel.
