Steven Spielberg Wants to make HALO!

halo3

Hell yeah! It looks like it’s going to happen, it looks like we are finally going to see Halo brought to the big screen, and director/producer Steven Spielberg is the man that is going to back the movie! How awesome is that! According to IESB who has confirmed this intel with several different sources, Spielberg is in active negotiations to develop the feature film adaptation.

Apparently Stuart Beattie’s script, Halo: Fall of Reach,  made it into Spielberg’s hands, and he was blown away by it. On top of that DreamWorks is looking for a tentpole film franchise  to help launch their newly independent studio with distribution over at Walt Disney Pictures.

If you don’t remember, Stuart Beattie wrote his Halo spec script during the writers strike, he had some concept art done for him, and he has been shopping his script around Hollywood. It looks like his hard work, talent, and perseverance has paid off. With Spielberg backing the film I don’t see how the movie won’t get made. Spielberg and Micosoft have a great relationship. It you remember at E3, Speilberg came out to introduce their Project Natal technology.

The movie is based off of the Halo novel Fall of Reach and last year Latino Review gave us a little description of the script.

The script is, first and foremost, a character-driven story about a soldier named John who was kidnapped or “conscripted” by the UNSC when he was just six years old, and then brutally trained to become an elite Spartan warrior known as Master Chief 117.

The script then takes us through the horrific first contact with the Covenant hordes on the doomed colony world of Harvest, and then climaxes with the spectacular fall of the UNSC forward base on Reach, during which every other Spartan is slaughtered.

The script also gives detailed outlines for the second movie, HALO: RISE OF THE FLOOD, which takes place entirely on the Halo ringworld, and the third and final movie, HALO: BATTLE FOR EARTH, which roughly follows the events of Halo 3, the game.

One cool advantage of this first script is that (like the shark in JAWS) you don’t even see the Covenant until halfway through the movie. And because all the creatures are CGI creations, this cuts the budget down dramatically and makes a first Halo movie that much more viable. For Halo fans, it’s like the prequel that provides all the answers to questions they’ve thought about for years. For non Halo fans, it’s an exciting action movie that provides a clear, concise introduction to a world five hundred years in the future with relatable characters and a terrifying alien menace.

From the sound of it this is all going to work out! We are going to see a Halo movie come to life and we can all thank screenwriter Stuart Beattie for not giving up on the project and pushing his idea forward! Now it will be in the hands of one of the great filmmakers of the world as a producer, for now. Who knows, maybe and hopefully Spielberg himself takes the directing chair for this one. How feakin awesome would that be!

Hope this is true and happens!! A great director for a great game coming back to life on the jumbo screen. Imagine it on IMAX……Oh dear!!

  2. Justin on August 8th, 09

    Sounds unimpressive.

  3. InfiniteMonkey on August 8th, 09

If this is really true, it would be really cool with Spielberg at the helm. Just bring in Peter Jackson and his WETA team to do all the CGI, animatronics and conceptuals, then it would be really cool. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

  4. Pete on August 8th, 09

I really hope this doesn't happen after seeing GI Joe, POTC, Australia… Beattie really isn't all that.

  5. Jay on August 8th, 09

"Saving Private Ryan" in space does sound cool, :) And I mean that in the best way possible.

  6. Mann is the Man on August 8th, 09

I cannot believe this! It sounds too good to be true

  7. Plunko on August 8th, 09

If it's Spielberg directing, ILM will do the fx, guaranteed.

  8. optomistic on August 8th, 09

    Hell Yeah!

  9. DrVenkman on August 8th, 09

No, not necessarily, remember WETA is doing all the effects for his Tintin film. I think since they have a lot of preproduction stuff already done for the film, they might just use them. Theres no reason why they wouldn't.

  10. DrVenkman on August 8th, 09

Seriously! If he ends up for same reason not directing it, I wonder who he will bring on board to do it.

  11. DrVenkman on August 8th, 09

Yeah but he also wrote, the Pirates of the Caribbean films, and Collateral. With Spielberg guiding him through the story and rewrites it will end up being a great film! Look at all the incredible films Sci-fi and war films Spielberg has made! I blame the 4th Indiana Jones on Lucas who always gets his way, even when working with Spielberg.

  12. Alberto on August 8th, 09

Do remember that Steven Spielberg -a much as I like his movies- is also behind Transformers 2.

  13. DrVenkman on August 8th, 09

His great films outweigh the bad ones. Thats what I'm going off of. He is one of my favorite directors, and I trust that he will do everything right for Halo.

  14. OrangeRush2112 on August 8th, 09

even stevens bad films are still watchable – and i hope jackson is someway connected. i really want to see a warthog in action.

  15. Ekans on August 8th, 09

There's always Operation Chastity to look forward to?

  16. Pete on August 8th, 09

I mentioned the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (see: POTC in the previous post), and don't exactly rate them – the first is very good but after that they're stinkers. Collateral is good, but what about the rest? Has this rumour been leaked purely because GI Joe had its release this weekend and people want to see what the reaction would be like?

GI Joe, not good. Pirates, one good two not. Australia, no. Collateral, yes. 30 Days Of Night I can take or leave. I don't understand how two good movies, one mediocre one and four bad movies equate to excitement over dealing with the biggest game-to-movie properties ever seen?

If we factor in Spielberg as a producer, he is the one who greenlit Transformers 2, which is equally as damning of Spielberg's recent form as Indy 4. This could go horribly wrong.

  17. Mr Black on August 8th, 09

Honestly I am not too impressed by Spielberg. Blomkamp would do a FAR better job. Spielberg, may have had some really bad ass films like Saving private Ryan, but he has been very hit and miss over the last 15 years or so. Speilberg does not equal "great film", just "money-making film".

  18. Ker on August 8th, 09

Blomkamp has only directed one film, and it hasn't even been released yet. Spielberg could do anything he does and better. Who do you think one of the directors Blomkamp was inspired by? Ummm, Spielberg. From what I've seen of District 9, his whole film style was inspired by Saving Private Ryan, but set in a sci-fi universe. What director isn't hit or miss that has been making films the last 15 years?

  19. Joe on August 8th, 09

I think this should be done in CG. I think if you have a movie that is mostly blue screen, you should just go all the way. it's less clunky looking, and looks more polished. (George Lucas, you should listen.) I mean, come on look at the trailer for Star Wars Old Republic. Fantastic. Zemeckis has got it right on with mocap. To me, that is better than green screen everything.
On the other hand, Iron Man was completely sweet and believable, so I guess it just comes down to the choices that are made by director/producers.
If they go live action, keep it live action. if they go cg, keep it cg.

  20. Mr Black on August 8th, 09

The real reason I said Blomkamp is not because of District 9 but because of the short Halo films that he did a few years back (which are pretty cool) and I liked the look of those. Neill Blomkamp was actually originally intended to direct the film before it was originally canceled.
Dont get me wrong Spielberg has directed some of the greatest films of all time, like Saving Privaste Ryan, but that being said I just don't think he is the world's greatest film maker.

  21. mappleby05 on August 8th, 09

YES! YES! A thousand times YES! This will technically be a war movie. And when it comes to war movies, I trust Spielberg totally!

  22. simon clarke on August 9th, 09

dont do CGI DO LIVE ACTION FILM

  23. ShaftInferno on August 9th, 09

Well, I personally don't think he will. If he does, he'll be pushing a lot of films out soon — Tintin, Oldboy, Interstellar, Harvey, and then Halo? If there is a two-year gimme for the release date, then sure he could. But definitely not within this year.

  24. ShaftInferno on August 9th, 09

Oh, and definitely can't forget Indy 5 or Lincoln.

  25. skirchi on August 9th, 09

As excited as I am to see the HALO movie become a reality, I will be a little bummed that Neill Blomkamp, Peter Jackson and WETA would not be involved. They have done so much work on this movie already and would have made a killer HALO movie. Maybe this is for the best though. After the original Halo movie died last year, Neill Blomkamp and Peter Jackson went off and made District 9 which looks freakin' amazing.

  26. gay asshole on August 9th, 09

oh shit hold on wait for it……………………………….just ralphed in my daughters hair.

  27. Jack_Napier on August 10th, 09

Just keep Michael Bay away from it. and it should be ok.

  28. Azreal71 on August 10th, 09

Hmmmm WETA? wth happen to ILM and Speilberg? WETA is a very good EFX studio but they can’t hold a candle to ILM! people remember ILM created the live action in over 200 movies! add to that they have received 16 Best Visual Effects Oscars and 20 additional nominations. It had also received 22 technical Oscars! Again, WETA is very good but they are no ILM.

  29. Ralph- on August 10th, 09

Finally a Speilberg space epic! i just hope that Lucas steers clear.

  30. crack on August 10th, 09

Yeah, Steven's name was attached to both amazingly unimpressive Transformer movies. Get a good director (preferably no one by the name of Michael or Bay) and Steven to produce it.

  31. Gort on August 11th, 09

about time i hear more about this. heard about it a year or two ago in Gameinformer.

  32. MARCv.11 on August 12th, 09

ok i think people are hating a little too much here. Steven has made some kick ass films. and both transformer films were the shit.

idk what you all think about it, maybe the transformers films aren't following the original story line but look at any other movie. most movies have fallen out of that and became more hollywood then anything. but they still kick ass.
other then dragonball evolution. that movie sucked. haha.

but still, i think this movie is gonna kick ass. no matter if steven spielberg, george lucas, or peter jackson does it. its halo. the one movie most gamers have been looking forward to being made.
i'm excited. you should ALL be too. k.

  33. SalCantu on August 16th, 09

Personally I think Peter jackson was too chicken sh_t to step up to the plate! It's took some huge ones to try and please the all the nay sayers. Can't wait to see the finished product!

  34. semajNESS on August 18th, 09

    Oh, God… not Spielberg…

All things considered, I think JJ Abarams could make a sick Halo… just look at what he did to Star Trek…

  35. InfiniteMonkey on August 18th, 09

    That would be hella tiiiiight!

  36. dray on August 30th, 09

It sounds like a movie 300 in the future???? i would love to see this film and u will also be able to see master chiefs face!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. PurpleReaper on November 4th, 09

I think that JJ Abrams, Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson would make a kick ass movie !! The Halo game is legendary and they are legendary directors/producers. And the Transformers movies were Kick Ass, (S.Spielberg), Lord of the Rings were awesome, my favourite triliogy personally (P.Jackson) and finally the 2009 Ster Trek, OMG The graphics and all that were really intense I loved it! (JJ.Abrams) So i think if anyone of these directors/producers or all of them had something to do with this movie…..It would be brilliant. If the book is so amazing and so is the game, then so will the movie. They can't make it bad….only if they killed off Master Chief then it would be bad.

I agree with the fact that it should be live action, though some of it would have to be CGI because of dangerous stunts and creatures and stuff like that.

    SO HA PEOPLE!!! >.<
