What did you think of the AVATAR Footage Shown for Avatar Day?
![]()
I was shocked to see so many people disappointed in the recent trailer released for James Cameron’s Avatar. I’ve seen aton of complaints, and I’m not sure why. I think the footage looks great, I love the creativity, the design, and the CGI is flawless. I got to see the 25 minutes of footage at Comic-Con, but this trailer got me even more pumped because it had footage I have not seen yet. Maybe I can see the potential of what it will be on the big screen, and in 3-D.
It makes me wonder if the people complaining are the same people that complain about all of the sequels and remakes that Hollywood is throwing out at us these days. If so, I am even more confused because Avatar is an original idea, with an original story, with original, characters, and aliens. We have a big budget action packed original movie that looks great, and people are complaining? I just don’t get it.
If you got a chance to see the 16 minutes of Avatar footage on Avatar Day I would love to know what you thought in comparison to the trailer! Did it give you a whole new perspective or are you still not digging it? Leave your review in the rant back section below!
UPDATE: ________________________________
I just got back from watching the Avatar footage in 3-D on the IMAX, and once again I was blown away! This is some of the best CGI I have ever seen! They have taken the technology to a whole new level of realism. The Na’vi characters looked real, if these aliens actually existed thats would they would look like, there are so many incredible little details. The footage that was shown was pretty much the same stuff we saw at Comic-Con except at the end they showed most of the visuals that are in the trailer.
Having read the comments below, I understand people have there own opinions and tastes, and I love reading the opinions of everyone. I just hope that even if you still aren’t sold on it to give it a chance. We still have no idea what the story is really about which is awesome, in a world where the trailers give the whole movie away, we are going to get to go into Avatar and be surprised at what the movie has in store for us.

I liked this movie the first time when it was called Princess Monoke or played it on Sega Genesis Phantasy Star II.
i was blown away by the teaser trailer it looks awesome but… and here comes the ''but'' i think those blue whatever they are are to CG for my taste and seemed a little to charmy. it'd be better if they were kinda Pan's Labyrinth-ish style, more realistic and less CG but other than that ill be on the line on the premiere
The movie looks horrible it it has horrid special effects.
I think everyone has different tastes not that they "complain about everything".
The Avatar is not for everyone and I have to agree…the footage of the blue creatures looks very "CGI"…like Star Wars 1,2,3 episodes CGI which, in many people's cases, including mine, is not a good thing. It makes the creatures too "video game" for my tastes. Why I keep making fun of them as looking like "furries"…they do look like the bad fanart for furries in my eyes.
I was excited about this film until I saw the trailer and all the other stuff that has come out. Now, I probably will not go and see it because it is not appealing to me visually.
Even 3D isn't appealing to me because 3D is a gimmick used by lazy directors to try and make soemthing cool when it really ins't. Ihe film cannot hold up in 2D it is a bad film….see "Beowulf" for reference.
Excuse the spelling errors in the last paragraph…the writing window was glitching so I could not proofread it before sending.
I don't care if people have different taste, with the technology we have today the graphics should be better. Do you think the graphics are poorly done for a reason?
If there is a reason then people would be more understanding…
I don't see the Princess Mononoke reference.
I guess its safe to say I'm immune to all this CGI stuff. Dont get me wrong, I like it but really nothing blows my lid off anymore unless it has a good story to back it up ( DISTRICT 9 is a perfect example of what a GOOD CGI movie is ; it had content, backbone, character dev ; honestly without any of that, it would be another pointless CGI movie ( Transformers ROTF was one ; Top notch effects .. but really pooooooooor with story )
I'm sure this movie has potential yes . Too early to say it sucks because we ALL NEED TO SEE IT before you can officially say that it does/does not suck . I saw the trailer yesterday in HI DEFINITION 1080p glory …and well. First thing that came to my mind was " tsk another FINAL FANTASY : SPIRITS WITHIN MOVIE ? " …
I think ill have no expectations for this movie — I didnt with District 9 — and that film blew my mind !!
James Cameron, Im sure, has the wild card up his sleeve …. somewhere…
T-t-t-ttt TODAY JR!
Ooo! Finally a live-action Exo-Squad! Sweet!
By the way, does this blog have no proofreaders or editors?
"25 min"? You can't take the time to spell out minutes or use the proper "min."?
And "aton"?
Oh if you couldn't tell from my last post, this looks like boring drek. It took him TEN YEARS to come up with a mash up of "Enemy Mine" and "Mechwarrior"???
this movie looks great and the effects…are you blind? Or are you just retarded?if you actually are from texas chances are your the result of ignorant inbreeds
wow this..movie is absolutely nothing like those………hrmm…so do you realize how stupid you now sound? hrmm? i mean…you had nothing remotely creative or even clever to bring to the table? you compared it to an anime and an old game that holds absolutely no resemblance to it? well I think I can speak for both your mohter and everyone here when I say I wish she had gotten that abortion
Thanks for the personal attack. It nixes your argument when you personally attack someone and shows how low your intelliegence level is.
Me and my fiance were really blown away by the presentation. Even in just the few scenes we were getting invested in the characters and wanted to explore Pandora with them. I am actually kind of curious about what screens this was shown on for people who are bitchin' about the CG. To me it is some of the best life-like cg I have seen. From the very beautiful skin colors, to the silky smooth and naturalistic/animalistic Na'vi movements. To the soulful eyes, the overall look is astounding. The environments were also top notch and stunning, and we were awed by the night scenes. Seeing as this was 16 minutes of a full movie, and only from the beginning, I find it hard to judge if the storyline is cliched or not. It does use basic story archetypes for a set up, but its what you do with those archetypes that matters. the Na'vi i found to be a really fascinating race of beings, can't really call them aliens since its their home planet not ours. The 3D effect was handled really well too, pretty much the best use I have seen. It has some of the money shots of course, but it also has a subtle depth of field that isn't always trying to push images into your face. I took away from this a sense of being ushered into a new place, and I really cannot wait to experience the full movie.
i think thats the distinction people are having a hard time making when they say it doesnt look real is that the actual design doesnt look real, not the rendering of the design.
it would have been wise to make them look a bit more gritty and less cartoony… the slick simplicity of their bodies and the minor additions of cat nose and ears to a very disney human doesnt make for real looking, even if EVERYTHING about the movement, texture, lighting was perfect.
some mentioned this on another blog, and i cant help but agree, the characters skin, eyes, hair look incredibly detailed( especially in a still frame), but the arms and legs when moving( in the scene when the girl fires her bow for example) do not bed in a realistic fashion….now i understand that they are not human, but we dont see muscles move under the skin which is a huge part of making it look real….so james fulfilled his promise of photo realism, just not movement realism lol
one other issue i have read about is how cut and paste sam looks when he wheels off the ship… there is no defense for this, it just doesnt look like he is there, and i think it might have something to do with how sharpley renderered the things in the background are, or possibly because he will be projected forward when seen in 3D
( we wont talk about why his mind can be put in someone elses body but we cant fix his spinal injuryl)..
all this being said i am still super excited, have watched the trailer 20 times and will make everyone i know see it in 3D!!
I don't know if I'd praise this movie's story as original.
Pocahontas anyone?
i thought it was beautiful and i cannot wait!
i guess i should feel ashamed for lowering myself to your level
I wonder if people are pre-judging this due to their hatred of "furries" I also hate "furries" but after watching the footage at Comic-con i think this is the best CGI I have ever seen in a movie. The animation, compositing and character models were flawless.
But very little of the story has been released and I agree that good CG with a crap story will still make a crap film.I will reserve judgment until I hear more about the actual story.
I saw the 3d footage and I was fairly impressed. I went in to the preview with a negative mindset because the trailer didn't do much for me, but seeing it in the IMAX3d really put it on another level. The parts that are completely CG that you see in the trailer look so much better in the 3d and are actually somewhat believable. Most of the footage shown was just extended shots of what is shown in the trailer that is out, but like I said before it just looks so much better when you actually get to see it in 3d.
So if you don't think you are going to be impressed with this movie (and have only seen the non 3d trailer/preview pics) you should reserve your judgments until you actually get to see it in 3d. Something as a side note that I noticed with the 3d as well as the fact that it actually made scenes better and wasn't thrown in to your face (like in Beowulf or just about any other 3d movie so far).
I think people who telling something about horrible efects, are just sooo so jealous, It reminds me a Titanic era when people telling about movie that it is such a shit , while they never saw that film.
For Us who loves nice movies wirh such a heart this will be f***g awesome moment, for You haters, well it your choise:)
I have no hate of furries…I just am not statisfied with the look of the characters. they do not "move real" there is no muscle movement under the skin so it takes me out of the "reality" they exist in.
It gives the characters this "comic book" feel because the brain doesn't see how they can be moving without body muscle movment.
I have seen the trailer, and it does nothing for me. And the fact James Cameron is doing it, inspires me even less. I will see the movie when it comes out, but i am going in with no expectations, and hopefully i will be pleasantly surprised.
1 part Pochahontas (sp?) + 1 part Enemy Mine + FF Spirits within = meh. CGI looks incredible EXCEPT when merging with the humans who look plastic-y and off.
