5 Favorite Movies Based on Video Games

There are a lot of video games that are adapted into movies that don’t end up being very good at all. Doing a list like this is like doing a list on the most appealing types of poop. I racked my brain with this one and here are the movies I came up with.
Mortal Kombat
When I was a kid I loved this movie which is why it is on the list. I know it’s insanely cheesy, but it was cool when I first saw it in the theater. The film was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and it follows a handful of martial artists with special abilities that fight in a tournament of death.
The video game was a 90’s favorite, I don’t know what kid didn’t enjoy playing it. The fatalities were awesome!
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
I was a huge fan of the Tomb Raider video games and as far as video game movies go it wasn’t that bad. The sequel was much worse. At the time Angelina Jolie being cast as Laura Croft just seemed inspired. There really isn’t much to the movie really, it’s pretty much a hot chick going around kicking ass. They plan on rebooting the franchise, it will be interesting to see how they do that, and who will be cast this time around.
Resident Evil
Now I really enjoyed all of the Resident Evil movies. They were actually a lot of fun to watch. I know it received a lot of negative reviews, but sometimes you have to watch a movie for what it is. Plus Milla Jovovich looked incredible in it. Like Tomb Raider it has a hot girl running around wrecking havoc and demolishing zombies. There is now a fourth Resident Evil movie being made, this time it will be brought to us in 3D.
Silent Hill
For me this is one of the best video game adapted movies made. It nails the world that the video game created, the nightmarishly freaky world of death and bloody chaos. It follows the story and setting very closely. I know they added in a few new and different things, but it only enhanced the story. The video game was quite disturbing, and the movie did a great job in bringing that disturbing world to life. It looks like we are going to get a sequel to this film and it is being developed by the same guys who made this first one so i am expecting it to be just as good.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
This movie makes the list because of how beautifully animated it was. The style of the setting and characters of the movie just blew me away. It is a bit slow in places and the dialogue falls pretty flat at times, but it looked great! The action sequences that were choreographed for the film were incredible as well! The movie is more of a stand alone story that really isn’t connected to the games at all. It just takes place in that world.
These are just five of several movies that have been based on video games. What movies would you choose for your list?
Unfortunately none of them are that good. Movies based on games are never done as well as they should have been, just like games based on movies fail to live up to what they should have, could have, would have.

My honorable mention,anything by Uwe Boll,the guy only does video game movies and he tries his little creepy heart out to make a good movie!

I disagree. The first MK movie was quite a good adaption. I think Anderson's best movie to date. Oh and video games that are based off movies? You are calling Goldeneye bad?

I agree with all of your choices, Doc – and would even toss in Doom. Yes, it's rubbish, but oh, what glorious rubbish.
The only reason Final Fantasy TSWI counts as a "videogame" movie is because it was made by Square / Sony (which severely damaged Square almost killing the company) and they tacked the FF name onto it. I'm sorry, I hate that movie on a number of levels. The fact that it is also just a plain bad film is another reason.
God I hated Tomb Raider… Hated it with a passion; such a piece of crap.
Cool list and thanks for putting Final Fantasy on there. I really like that movie and it gets bashed constantly. I remember when MK first came out and I thought it was the greatest movie ever. I still dig it I guess.
I really agree with you! But it is more enjoyable than most of the other video game films.
Yeah, it was a toss up between Tomb Raider of Doom and I went with Tomb Raider.

I really did think about it, but I just couldn't do it. I didn't even like it as a kid.
I honestly would have gone for Final Fantasy: Advent Children way before The Spirits Within. Besides that though I agree completely with the rest of the list.

Correction: Video games made as movie promotions suck. The Warriors, The Godfather, and Ghostbusters were all decent video games; they weren't released as promotion for their respective movies.

I just wished they would make a Silent Hill movie with the same mechanics as Res Evil 4, the over the shoulder gameplay was genius! it sparked interest in the game again.

Mario Brothers, Spiderman (let's get real it IS a video game), Max Payne, Grand Theft Auto and Street Fighter. I may have projected my "hopes" for GTA. And YES, I'm kidding. If you guys had to compile a list, I guess you had to come up with "something", right? Thanks for not asking me to do the legwork on "this" one. My legs would've fallen asleep.
Final Fantasy Advent Children should totally have made the list! I love the spirits within but seriously, advent children was beyond amazing.
I love resident evil and Silent hill
The only one on this that i liked is Silent Hill … I can deal with the first 2 resident evil movies but the 3rd one was retarded …
