5 Movies We Never Get Tired of Watching

They’re only a handful of movies in the world that a person can watch over and over again, and not get tired of it. Most movies you can watch a few times but then it starts to get old and what’s the point of watching it anymore if your board with it? But then there are those gems, those films that no matter how many times you see them they never get old. Here is a list of five films that fit this category.

The Shawshank Redemption

shawshank_redemption_ver1

This is a timeless classic and one of the most perfect movies ever made. It follows a man who is accused of killing his wife and spends two decades in prison for a crime he may not have committed, all along planning the ultimate escape. I see this movie on TV all time. If I’m flipping through the channels and come across it, I always stop to watch no matter what point in the movie it’s in… even though I own it on Blu-ray.

What makes this movie so enjoyable is the story. As depressing as it seems it’s one of the best-feel good movies of all time. No, it’s not overrated.

Ferris Beuller’s Day off

ferris

Now here’s a kick-back 80’s comedy about an uber popular high school kid that ditches school for a day with his two closest friends. This is a movie anyone can enjoy. I’ve been watching this movie over and over again since it came out in 1986 and I still get a kick out of it!

I love that the main character speaks to the audience throughout the movie sharing his thoughts and techniques, it’s what makes this movie a brilliant comedy. (It’s also the aspect of the movie that almost had Mathew Broderick turn it  down!)

Ghostbusters

GHOSTBUSTERS

You can never go wrong with Ghostbusters. The fact that a team of scientists come together to bust ghosts make this the ultimate geek film experience. It’s got everything a movie lover needs and the comedy is top notch.

Every scene of this movie has something that will make you laugh. This could possibly be the most quotable movie of all time.

This is Spinal Tap

this_is_spinal_tap

Watching this movie will give you the best abdominal workout you ever had due to the constant laughing fits you will have to endure through the whole experience. This mockumentary/rockumentary is the parody of a heavy metal rock band named Spinal Tap. I’ve seen the movie countless times and every time it makes me laugh.

I am always finding something new in it that I hadn’t noticed before. Which in a way makes the movie funnier every time I see it.

Empire of the Sun

empire_of_the_sun

I’m gonna come right out and say it. This is Steven Spielberg’s best movie of his career, and it’s one that I’ve never grown tired of watching. Like The Shawshank Redemption, this is a perfect film. One that’s been overlooked by so many people. It follows a boy’s journey through WWII in China and how he goes from being a spoiled rich British kid living in China with his family, to being placed in a Japanese prisoner camp where he is forced to learn to survive.

You might be interested to know that the boy in the movie is played by a young Christian Bale, and his performance in it was Oscar worthy. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love the feeling that this movie gives me when I watch it, and there’s important lessons to be learned from it.

What are some of your favorite films that you will never grow tired of watching?

50 Rant-Backs so far

  1. Tired Canadian on September 5th, 09

The only one that needs to be dropped is Empire of the Sun and replace it with Rio Bravo. Now thats a darn perfect list !!!!
Thanks and have a swell day.

  2. LolaLovesDanger on September 5th, 09

i don't agree with most of your list. so i will make my own.

  3. Mann is the Man on September 5th, 09

Good list, but one that I would add is The Matrix. That is one movie that I have seen dozens and dozens of times and I never tire of it to any extent. Like Doc said about Spinal Tap – I have seen The Matrix so many times and I pick up something new every time – whether it be a new philosophical outlook, a homage to a very obscure film, or a connection to another religion. I would also add Blade Runner for the same reasons.

  4. BadassShroom on September 5th, 09

    Fifth Element!!!

  5. TikiDragyn on September 5th, 09

I am not sure about Empire of the Sun, its a great movie, but I can't really see watching it too many times. I would drop that and add Karate Kid. Karate Kid is a flick that I can easily just watch over and over. along with karate Kid, i cant argue with the rest of your list, all are timeless classics in their own way.

  6. don jerry on September 5th, 09

what about debbie does dallas or DEAP THROATwhere are they?

  7. okelay on September 5th, 09

V for Vendetta, Serenity, Pride and Prejudice (2005), Serenity, are my top five. I own the dvds,of course, but every time I found them on tv I leave them on. I can quote practically every line of them.

  8. Dan Amrich on September 5th, 09

This is why I like you guys. Two of your top 5 are also in mine. And everything else on your list, I now want to see again. :)

  9. okelay on September 5th, 09

I missed Love,Actually and that makes five. I also love Before Dawn and Before Sunset but not as much.
I like your list but while I like Shawshank Redemption and Empire of the sun, I do get tired of those.-

  10. @dametokillfor on September 5th, 09

See, for me it's daft little films I can watch over and over.

The Covenant, it's so stupid, I can't resist it.
X-Men 2, personal favourite comic book movie ever, sod The Dark Knight.
The Fountain, the only film I've watched repeatedly which still has the same heartbreaking effect on me the seventh time I've watched it as it has the first.

I know others don't agree, don't expect them to, it's all a matter of personal opinion.

  11. aboynamedart on September 5th, 09

  16. @d4rthwader on September 5th, 09

these comments are seriously upsetting me. not only is this list perfect but Empire of the Sun is such a beautiful film beyond words. actually these comments have proven how much the movie has been overlooked. horizons need some broadening, STAT!!!

  17. @piranical on September 5th, 09

You Forgot "Fight Club" A movie I never get enough of.
The true test of this film is even after you know the "twist" It's still just as enjoyable.
Unlike, say, 6th sense for instance.
Spot on with all the rest, I'm ashamed to say I've never even seen empire of the sun though, Perhaps I should check it out. It just never sounded like anything I'd enjoy.
And people who mentioned Indiana Jones or star wars or the matrix should keep in mind that it's not a best trilogy list. Although the only really good matrix film is the 1st anyway, so I'm not sure what list to put that in.

  18. JackSpacePirate on September 5th, 09

The Fifth Element and The Jacket should be on the list

  19. tetsuwan_a on September 6th, 09

How bout a popcorn movie version? Mine would be Spider-Man 2, The Matrix, Dogma, Snatch and a battle between Anchorman (Ron Burgundy) / Zoolander

  20. DrVenkman on September 6th, 09

    Fine! Be that way!

  21. DrVenkman on September 6th, 09

Rio Bravo is a great movie, but I like Empire more.

  22. DrVenkman on September 6th, 09

The Matrix is a great movie, but the thing is parts 2 and 3 killed the whole mythology for me.

  23. DrVenkman on September 6th, 09

Karate Kid is totally one of those films I can watch over and over again! Good Call.

  24. DrVenkman on September 6th, 09

Love Actually is one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time.

  25. DrVenkman on September 6th, 09

It really is! If you enjoy watching the films over and over again then thats all that matters! No matter what the film is.

  26. DrVenkman on September 6th, 09

Nice list man! I love all those films!

  27. DrVenkman on September 6th, 09

Damn your right, Breakfast Club is one of those films. That movie is fantastic.

  28. DrVenkman on September 6th, 09

    Thank you!

  29. DrVenkman on September 6th, 09

Empire of the sun was such a great film! You should check it out for sure. As for Fight Club, it was on my list to put on the list but didn't make the ultimate list, so it is one of those films. There are tons of movies I can watch over and over again. I just had to chose five and let the readers choose the rest.

  30. DrVenkman on September 6th, 09

The Jacket? Really? That surprises me, but if you really like that movie then go for it.

  31. TikiDragyn on September 6th, 09

I have no problem with Empire of the Sun, it's an amazing movie, I just feel that its more a movie that I wouldn't just lounge around and watch, its to heady a drama. Shawshank works on this list because although it is dramatic and has a deeper well of thought going on, the overall tone and atmosphere and acting just allows for repeated viewings. Empire has such a dark mood and overall tone, that it's not easy to just watch and digest repeatedly.

  32. TikiDragyn on September 6th, 09

a majority of John Hughes movies would land on this list, truth be told.

  33. phebsta on September 6th, 09

Also, im kinda surprised u dont have wierd science on the list- that is an absolute must!

  34. phebsta on September 6th, 09

also 'the warriors' should be on there

  35. MrBlack on September 9th, 09

I think I agree with your list a tad bit more than Venkman's

  36. @pynkpandah on September 9th, 09

There.. are parts 2 and 3 of the Matrix? I'm sorry… i was under the impression that the Wachowski's were kidnapped by aliens and taken to a galaxy far… far.. far away before they could make them >.> (:D <3)

  37. @pynkpandah on September 9th, 09

    Omg "Empire Records" people.

"I'LL BE BACK AND YOU'LL BE SORRY!"

    Ooh and The Breakfast Club.

  38. RyanJJohn on September 9th, 09

I agree with all those movies, but except for The Shawshank Redemption and Ghostbusters, those movies wouldn't have been the first to spring to mind. And thinking about it, there are a TON of movies I can watch over and over again and not get sick of. Some that haven't been listed yet:

Tremors.. you know you always watch it when it's on.

    The Princess Bride.

Die Hard. (Now I have a machine gun. Ho. Ho. Ho.)

    Predator

    Alien

Predator Vs. Alien (I know it's bad, I just have to watch it.)

  39. Boat on September 9th, 09

I like RyanJohn's list, Empire is a good movie but not Spielbergs best nor can I watch it twice in a year.

Movies that come on TV over and over and I can't turn them off (in no order):

    1) Predator
    2) Commando
    3) Major League
    4) Aliens
    5) The Naked Gun
    6) Die Hard
    7) Bloodsport 8) The Princess Bride
    9) Fight Club
    10) Shawshank Redemption

  40. DrVenkman on September 9th, 09

Empire Records is awesome! Good call!

  41. Mr.Internets on September 9th, 09

How in the world is "The Big Lebowski" not on your list.

  42. Robrowboski on September 10th, 09

    where is terminator 1 and 2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. @kidbrightside on September 10th, 09

why the hell isnt BACK TO THE FUTURE on this list ? FAIL!

  44. @silvrnblack on September 10th, 09

List has to have Tombstone has to be on the list.

  45. @JamesCaudill on September 10th, 09

Nice list. I always refer to this kind of list as, "If you could only watch three (five) movies, and that's it, for the rest of your life, what would they be?"

Personally, my list goes as follows (since we're all into showing off our tastes):

    1. There Will Be Blood
    2. Dances With Wolves
    3. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
    4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    5. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

    Honorable Mention:

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

  46. @my!! on September 11th, 09

Hm… I would add a Few Good Men to this list… mostly because its one of my mom's "I never get tired of this movie" movies and she sorta passed that on to me.

  47. @micah_kossove on September 11th, 09

    1 Word………………… SNATCH!

  48. Guitar Tuition Reviews on September 12th, 09

I’d take Pulp Fiction over those last four any day.

  49. Clickbank Product Reviews on September 13th, 09

I haven’t seen empire of the sun but i’ll add it to my netflix queue since I like all the others on this list.

  50. scottie mcgee on September 13th, 09

i agree with venks list. all are worthy of this list. And since everybody else is putting up there personal list i might as well share mine.

    in no specific order.
