George Clooney wants to direct his friend and Syriana, Oceans 11, 12, and 13 co-star Matt Damon, in a political film he is developing about Osama Bin Laden’s former chauffer, entitled Hamdan v. Rumsfeld.

Adapted by Aaron Sorkin, Hamdan v. Rumsfeld centers on the lengthy campaign waged by US Navy lawyer Charles Swift and Georgetown law professor Neal Katyal to ensure a fair trial for Salim Hamdan, the bodyguard and driver of Osama bin Laden.

Clooney explained:

It’s about the so called ‘War On Terror’, but set in a courtroom.

The film will follow the plight of the chauffer, who was captured in Afghanistan and shipped to notorious US detention centre Guantanamo Bay, located in Cuba.

Damon will play Swift, Handan’s lawyer, who eventually managed to take his case as far as the US Supreme Court.

Clooney’s recent offer may stem from Damon’s recent complaint that his friend gets all the best parts in Hollywood.

At the New York premiere of his new film The Informant!, Damon said:

George just wasn’t right for the part [in the informant], thank God, so I got to play it. He gets enough good roles, he doesn’t need all the good ones, he’s got to leave some for the rest of us!

Clooney most recently directed the 2008 flop Leatherheads, but got a well deserved Oscar nod for his 2005 directing debut in Good Night, and Good Luck.
