FOX Developing a Sci-Fi Western Series

I was wondering if we would ever see a new sci-fi western on the small screen. It was only a matter of time before it happened. The last sci-fi western that I really enjoyed was Firefly. I don’t think there has really been anything since that went off the air. I wish I could say Firefly is coming back but that just isn’t the case. This new series comes from Scott Rosenbaum who is an executive producer on the NBC show Chuck, and is coming from Warner Bros. TV and Wonderland Sound and Vision which is McG’s production company. This means that he is also unfortunately a producer on the series. McG has produced two other series for FOX, The OC which got canceled after 3 seasons, and Fastlane which was a bomb.

The untitled  series is described as an epic Western with a sci-fi twist, the show will revolve around a gunslinger caught between worlds and will feature a nod to Planet of the Apes. Rosenbaum says:

What I’m really interested in is the revamping of the Western genre where you still have all of the iconic Western themes and iconic Western tropes but the idea is that it will feel incredibly contemporary and will introduce the Western to a whole new generation.

Rosenbaum seems pretty excited about the project. Apparently hae has been wanting to develop a series like this for years. It should be interesting to see how it plays out. I never got on the Chuck bandwagon, but McG’s first two TV series attempts didn’t do too well. I love the idea of a sci-fi western, but I don’t think this is the one we were all waiting for. I hope I’m wrong. What do you think of the new project and the people involved?

Someone shoot this idea down before it get's on screen then cancelled straight away and then we get people saying that sci-fi western style doesn't work.

so are they just trying to jump in before the dark tower series gets started? if this causes abrams to rush the series to get it off the ground, i will never forgive him

Shoot the idea, yeah that's the ticket! Seriously, what are they smoking out there. They saw it necessary to kill Firefly (wonderful show by the way) and now they want to do another with whom, some idiotic actors with a script that parallels that of Firefly? Please.

Not bringing back Firefly is just stupid. Nothing before or since has taken the risks and delivered like it did. I might have a look at this, but I have a feeling it won't hold a candle.

Heath, you're forgetting Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. western scifi like ten years before firefly. also cancelled by fox, also a fantastic show.

You know, if they want to introduce iconic Western themes, etc., to a new generation, then just make a goram WESTERN! Or bring back Firefly.

This sounds stupid, esp. with McG's fingers in it.

Will Fox put this on Friday nights — to kill it?

I second that thought – just bring back Firefly – it's what I instantly thought of when I read this headline… inevitably Fox will just kill what they have concocted in a matter of episodes thus rendering new fans of said show inexplicably mad ONCE AGAIN. *shakes head* I hate Fox.

Sounds to me like a rehash of Wild Wild West (the original with Robert Conrad). Perrsonally, I'd rather see a new show in the Firefly universe — complete with Joss at the helm. And somewhere other than FOX.

Why not just bring back Firefly? It's already got a built-in fanbase and with the press it got for Serenity, it's bound to be more popular than before. Why does FOX suck so very hard?

I agree, bring back Firefly, duh. I would like to give props to Brisco County, which was a really good show, imho.

Bring back Firefly. Kind of a no-brainer – oops, thats right, FOX has no brains to work with….
A new show IN the Firefly universe would be fantastic – especially w/Joss at the helm
