Review: The Vampire Diaries Season 1 Episode 2 ‘Night Of The Comet’

*SPOILERS AHEAD* Ok, it looks like each episode will start off with a bang! Somebody getting attacked by a vampire?

As Mystic Falls gets ready for it’s Fall Festival for a comet passing by. Poor pretty girl Vicky is still recovering in the hospital and is visited by Stefan who tries to use his powers to see if she remembers anything about her attack. One wild pretty cool scene is when Stefan is looking around the hospital and walks in a room of blood donors, his eyes turn black and he has to get the freak out of there!

Aunt Jenna is made to feel like she’s failing being a guardian to Elena and Jeremy by a trouble making Mr. Tanner.

Jeremy also pays Vicky a visit and keeps reminding her he likes her and she politely tells him she older, but she does it with a smile so maybe she’s slowly giving in. I think this is how it’ll play out.

As Elena visits the Salvatore home she finds Stefan is not there at first but she gets to meet Damon who fills her in on Stefan’s last girlfriend. As Stefan walks in on the two talking he unhappily insists Elena leave and then he and DamonĀ  have a talk and Damon gives him a harsh reality check that the closest he’ll ever be to being human is biting the flesh of a neck.

As everyone talks and preps for comet night. Elena bumps into a polite Stefan who talks about the comet and apologizes for his rude behavior.

Poor Vicky keeps having crazy dreams. Like really crazy (vampires are after her) dreams. IĀ  wonder why! As she wonders around she runs into Damon and says “I know you” to his answer of”well that’s unfortunate”. Then the scene jumps to her in the bathroom as he’s rushing her with fangs in full force! Stefan hears Vicky crying at a far distance and finds her along with Damon teasing dropping her from a building top.Damon’s influence proves to be much stronger than Stefan’s. Damon tried to talk Stefan into feeding on Vicky to get stronger but Stefan refuses to feed on her. Damon plays to Stefan’s weakness and then releases Vicky.

Stefan’s secret might have been compromised bu Bonnie.Aunt Jenna and Elena have a cooling off sit down. Jeremy see’s the girl he loves (Vicky) kissing another guy. Caroline runs into a hungry Damon. Elena finds Stefan to watch the comet with her and she talks a little about her “diary” and they have their first kiss.

This weeks verdict: You know what! This show is growing on me. Now I know it’s for the teenie audience but it has great writing, a little darker than Twilight (which I applaud) and it’s building it’s character’s in a slow smart way, not just shoving them in your face and leaving you to figure things out for yourself.

I'm trying very hard to like this show. I think it has some very strong points (The main one being Ian Somerhalder's Damon) but a couple of the smaller things are starting to bug me. One of the things i hate about Twilight that has kept me from reading or watching anything that has anything to do with it (other than the sparkling) is my failure to understand why a vampire who is hundreds of years old would A) go back to high school and B) be able to survive in the light. I think all good vampire stories are rooted in the same mythology and that includes adversion to the light.

oted in the same mythology and that includes adversion to the light. I really enjoy that there's a valid reason for Stefan and Damon to be able to walk in the sun (The ring) which makes it a little easier to swallow. Also, the reason for Stefan to be attending high school – the weak milk and water excuse of blending in really doesn't bother me that much.. What really gets me is that the brothers Vampire seem to materialistic carbon copies of each other.

One wearing a blue V neck Tee and black jeans and the other wearing the exact same shirt in black. And later, shirts, jeans and leather jackets (one black, ther other brown) and while this might not be unusual for twins, these boys are hundreds of years old, have had more than enought time to forge their own identies and yet here they are, dressing the same, with similar hair styles to boot. Such a small thing, but distracting as hell. The writing doesn't suck and the story seems to be boiling slowly – which i really enjoy – but otherwise, so all in all, not a bad 44 minutes of TV

While I believe the 2nd episode was way better than the pilot, I'm still going to reserve my judgement on the show. Paul Wesley's a cute kid, but the way he plays this character like the stereotypical brooding vampire is starting to bore me. We've seen him unwind a bit this week with his confrontation against Damon but even then I didn't really get where this character is coming from.

Damon is the bad guy, Stefan is supposed to be the good guy right? But Stefan never seemed that concerned with Vicky's fate to begin with, given that she's an innocent. He busts in her room to brain wash her, throws her to the ground after Damon has dangled her from a roof top and then proceeds to refuse to drink her blood not because it's wrong, but rather because he doesn't want to give Damon the satisfcation.

At least that's the vibe I've been getting. Damon on the other hand is not much better. He's no better in my eyes than a rapist, going around abusing and terrorizing teeange girls. Yeah, some badass you are. And no, it's not the same story as it is with all vampires. When a vampire drinks from a human and kills him, I can get that, it's a predatory thing. Damon attacks this girl, leaves her alive with the sole intent to hurt Stefan, kidnaps her, brainwashes her, offers her up as a snack and then re-brainwashes her. He basically mind-f**ks the poor girl.

And at the end he finds another one. Not cool in my book,

ok – first things first – its a tv show. ok – i get that. BUT arent these kids in high school? the cops and ems arrive at the party in the woods because of the attack and everyone is hanging out and drinking AND no one gets questioned about the booze and their drinking? im no prude – but what kind of message does that send? at least show some cops busting kids or getting really pissed off that they are drinking – and on a school night (not that that really matters at this point) very confusing. this has a decent premise, but hanging out in high school when you are over 100 yrs old – move on. the same goes for twilight – stupid. and as for the light – this really is stupid as well. although i do find the chemistry between elena and stephen as opposed to stewart (horrible actress) and the other idiot patterson. ok im done.
