Review: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY Genuinely Scared the Hell out of Me

So I finally got to see the new horror film, Paranormal Activity for myself, and yes, it’s as scary as everyone says it is! It’s been a really long time since a movie gave me the goosebumps of fear, as well as that overwhelming feeling of being genuinely scared. This movie got me, it scared the hell out of me, and that’s not easy to do. I’m so happy it did though! Movies like this don’t come around very often, so it’s a great surprise and treat when a filmmaker comes along that can scare the shit out of people.
After the movie was over, that fearful feeling stayed with me as a drove home on the dark empty street, and into my home. I actually turned the lights on to my house before I walked through the door. I’m not kidding! I find it absolutely hilarious that I was so damn scared! Laying in bed last night I couldn’t sleep! My imagination was running wild, every creak, crack, thud and sound made me pull the covers over my head just that much more. It really didn’t help when I woke up at one point to see my for year old daughter standing next to my bed just staring at me! What the hell!? She never did that before! Turns out she just wanted a glass of water. But still! If you’ve seen the movie then you know why that would freak me out. Needless to say, I’m pretty tired today, but not as scared.
I had such a great time watching this movie! Not only was it scary but it was funny as well. You get a sense of who these characters are and what their personalities are like. They did a great job portraying real life and how people would really act in this kind of situation. The movie stared Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat and their acting was as natural as can be, they weren’t trying to act, they were being themselves, but thrust into the terrifying place they found themselves in.
There were no crazy in your face special effects in the movie. The horror is very subtle at the beginning but it and the suspense builds and builds until the climax of the film hit you in the face. It’s like Willy Wonka said, “The suspense is terrible… I hope it’ll last.” The whole movie took place in a house; most of it was filmed in one room. It was a very simple but effective. The film was made on a $11,000 budget and it just shows what you can do with very little money and a big imagination. Director Oren Peli did a fantastic job scaring me!
The film is about a couple who move into together in San Diego. Katie believes that a spirit or demon has been following her since she was a little girl. Her boyfriend Micah isn’t fully convinced, so he buys a camera to start documenting the weird things and noises that are going on in the house, hoping to catch something on film. After a few nights of recording and waking up to crazy noises in the middle of the night he starts to believe, and he is hell bent on taking care of the problem himself.
I was very skeptical going into this movie, and I had very high hopes that it would be as scary as I heard it was. I wasn’t disappointed; Paranormal Activity is an instant horror movie classic. It’s the Halloween season, and I highly recommend you go see it if you haven’t already! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed in it either.
THIS MOVIE WILL SCARE YOU!
If you have seen it, tell us what you thought!

Now I gotta download this!
its a movie you need to at least experience in the theater JUST ONCE. its awesome with a audience. To see it at home i dont think would be the same. When i saw it at the theater u can just FEEL the tension from everyone else. Its great…..
i can't wait to see this. i'm glad it's officially playing in theaters around town.
This movie was awesomes, I felt the exact same way when I got home from seeing it and on the drive home.
No. See it in a packed theater. It adds to the experience!
Hey Doc. Similar thing happened to me when I got home. My girlfriend sleepwalks and sometimes just stands in the bedroom at night! After seeing this in the theater when we were n our way home, I could not stop thinking about her doing that crap!
I'm glad you liked it!
Saw it last night, really good movie. To me it wasn't as scary as everyone said it was, but still very suspenseful and good at making you nervous. There were some really great moments, and it all felt very real.
This is absolutely meant to be seen in a theater, packed with a hundred or so other screaming people. At the very VERY least, buy it on DVD, and invite a bunch of people over to watch it with you for the first time.
I agree, actually. The first half of the movie was almost boring. Loud bangs and lights going on and off are startling, sure, but not the scariest movie ever made. Then, by the last 20 minutes, I was holding my ears, and nearly closing my eyes. It sneaks up on you.
I'll agree this film is a theater must see, at least ONCE! I went to a midnight showing with my brother and a few friends. Trust me when i say my brother and i aren't easily scared, but the minute we got home we couldn't go into our rooms (we slept in the freaking living room, for pete's sake)! So yeah, if you want to go see a movie that'll will freak you out, be my guest! i promise you won't be disappointed!
I guess this next part of my comment could ruin some of the film for you so, i'll put the warning sign up:
****SPOILER****
I also couldn't sleep without my feet uncovered…I SWEAR TO GOD!!! ever since i was a little girl my mom has told me "make sure to cover yourself well at night or the ghost will tickle your feet" (horrible thing to say to a kid, i know), so imagine me in a theater where the sh** you're mom has been telling you since you were a little girl suddenly is on the big screen in what feels like a VERY realistic situation!!!! F. M. L!!!!
Just got back from seeing it tonight. Definitely meant to be seen in a packed theater. Driving home was freaky all on its own, but coming home to a dark house was worse. i don't think i'm sleeping much at all tonight, probably burning through a season of the office.
**SPOILER**
I think the smile is what freaked me out the most. "Everything is going to be fine now, we're going to be okay." Chills.
I think i am way too scared to go see it. But I am very tempted to see it. That curiosity…But I know I will not be able to sleep at night, just thinking about it, gets me scared, lol. Nice review!

Dude, I couldn't agree more. I saw it with my nephew and as we left I had chills for at least the entire ride home. I got home around 11:30 and proceeded to turn every light on in the house. I then stayed awake for a good 2 hours COMPLETELY unable to even get tired. This movie scared me. There are only a couple movies that did that: Jaws, The Exorcist, Blair Witch, The Talky Tina Episode from the Twilight Zone, and Magic.
Once I actually went to bed, I stayed under the covers awake for another 45 minutes.
BTW @Arie you owe it to yourself to see it. It;s scary, yes, but it's really f'n good.
Here's my early morning post: http://iconogeek.com/2009/10/19/im-afraid-to-go-t...
