Sam Raimi Going Back to the Basics for SPIDER-MAN 4

spiderman3_11

If you’ve seen Spider-Man 3 then you know what kind of a train wreck it was. It was so bad that when Spider-Man 4 was announced no one seemed interested in seeing it. Even Sam Raimi admits that Spider-Man 3 was a let down. He has said this several times and most recently states:

I think having so many villains detracted from the experience. I would agree with the criticism.

Spider-Man 4 is going to start shooting soon, and many fans are worried that it is going to be another let down. I don’t think that will happen. Raimi recognizes that Spider-Man 3 wasn’t that good, and they have learned from their mistakes. I don’t think they will screw this one up. Raimi said he had learned some new lessons and storytelling tricks from his recent horror flick Drag Me to Hell which was a smaller and more intimate production. Here is what he says:

I think I’ve learned about the importance of getting to the point and the importance of having limitations, and I’m hoping to take that into a production where I’m actually allowed to explore with more of the tools to pull it off with a little more splendour.  I hope I don’t lose that edge that I’ve just found. That would be my approach to Spider-Man 4: to get back to the basics.

As of right now, no story details have been revealed for the new Spider-Man 4 film. All we know is that Raimi loves telling stories about Peter Parker and his alter ego Spider-Man. The character intrigues him. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t be making a fourth film. As for any other comic book films he would like to make a movie out of he says:

I’ve always loved the Shadow. I tried to get the chance to direct the movie years ago but they wouldn’t hire me. I read a few of the pulp novels that they had and the character was very mysterious. I liked the intensity with which he dealt with his foes. It was uncompromising.

I am getting more excited for Spider-Man 4. Now that everyone is back on the project, and it’s gone through a couple of great screenwriters, and they aren’t going to make the same mistakes they made in part three, I can’t help but think Spider-Man 4 is going to blow us away. Only time will tell. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Ever since the second Michael Keaton Batman, they've tried to squeeze more and more villians into super-hero films. Not only does it screw character development in the villians, it doesn't do a lot of favours for the hero! This came to a head in Spiderman 3. Will it really change in Spiderman 4? I hope so. But I doubt it.

I think if this is good, it might make the third one SEEM better, and may make it alot more watchable knowing the next ones better. :-)

YES! THANK YOU GEEK GODS! What an interesting thing to say "back to basics" – he does not say "back to the actual story" which worries me. Does this mean we are killing off Gwen right away? Telling Kirsten to act more like MJ or I would even settle for acting like she wants to be in the films…

I really like Raimi; he's a passionate director – he loves the subject as stated above, or he wouldn't do it – he doesn't sign on just for the sake of money. But its not his fault 3 crashed and burned. I hope the producers have learned to keep their hands off the project as much as possible because too many 'great ideas' ruin the end product.

Here's hoping. I love this franchise regardless, which is sad I know but hey this red head has a crush on spidey and I am not afraid to admit it. I just wish the politics would stay out of the film and someone would listen to Ryan Reynolds about doing a comic film that is actually 100% faithful (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9r3wm7brtE) there are other times he talks about the b.s. around making films like this but if Raimi knows and has been listening to us fans rant – dear god I hope he follows through with a solid product.

I know I know – I babble, sorry, I guess I just don't care to format my repsonses because I always figure no one reads them! – but I wear a seat belt and yes there should be a genetic reproduction program for red heads (your statistic is optimistic; here in Canada it's 2% of the overall population)
