Tommy Lee Jones in talks to Helm and co-star in THE LINCOLN LAWYER

Some more Southern-drawl may be joining Matthew McConaughey in Lakeshore’s feature adaptation of The Lincoln LawyerTommy Lee Jones is in negotiations to helm and co-star in the adaptation of Michael Connelly’s 2005  best-seller, with John Romano penning the screenplay.

The Lincoln Lawyer centers on Mickey Haller(McConaughey), a wheeler-dealer Los Angeles lawyer who operates out of the back of his Lincoln. Haller is content with a career defending garden-variety criminals until he lands the case of a lifetime: defending a Beverly Hills playboy accused of murder.

No word as of yet on who Jones will play. The playboy character is described in the book as somewhat younger than Jones, but adjustments could be made tailored to Jones.

Jones’ only other stint in the directing chair was with his 2005 Mexico-set crime drama The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. Jones also starred in the film, winning the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival that year.

The only problem I see glaring out at me, is Romano’s writing on the finger in the throat pic Nights In Rodanthe and the lackluster comedy Intolerable Cruelty. I liked McConaughey in a Time To Kill, so as long as he doesn’t have to take off his shirt or have ghosts visit him… I’m fine.

What do you think of Tommy Lee Jones possibly directing and starring in The Lincoln Lawyer?

I think you're exactly right on McConaughey but I worry that Romano will adapt the script to him as opposed to the opposite. Tommy Lee Jones' age puts him out of the "playboy" role imo. Still, I'm a big Connelly fan so I'll watch the movie regardless.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada was an excellent movie, so I'd have faith in Tommy Lee to do something good. Maybe something Rain Maker-esque.

I am actually currently reading the book right now, i think McConaughey should be the playboy and Tommy Lee Jones be Mickey haller – a much better match to the actual characters in the book. I hate it when they adapt things to suit the screenplay and actors!
