VENOM will be a Defender of the Innocent? Are you Kidding Me!?

venom

Venom… a good guy? I guess us comic book Spider-Man fans just can’t get a break can we! It sounds like they are going to totally reinvent the character as a good guy! They might as well just not make the movie. Spider-Man is the good guy! Venom is not the good guy, Spider-Man and Venom fight each other! That good guy against bad guy. Are they going to team up in Spider-Man 5 to save humanity? What the hell is this. The news comes from Variety which states:

The Venom, an arch enemy of the web-slinger in the Marvel Comics series, will be transformed into an anti-hero who becomes a defender of the innocent.

Bullshit! Defender of the innocent? Are you kidding me? Spider-Man is the defender of the innocent, Venom kills the innocent! I’ve been getting pumped up for this Venom spin-off movie! Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote a script which I thought was great because Zombieland was awesome.  Then Gary Ross has come on board to do a rewrite of the script and possibly direct the movie, which I was really excited for because he is really talented.  Now the bomb is dropped that Venom will be a good guy? That just kills the whole movie for me. I don’t care to see Venom as a good guy. Do you?

Another one of our favorite comicbook characters is going to get ruined by the Hollywood system. VENOM IS A VILLAIN! Not a guy who goes around saving people! Come on people! Just so you know S.H.I.E.L.D. considers the Venom symbiote one of the greatest threats to humanity right along side Magneto, Doctor Doom, and Red Skull. And Sony wants to make him a good guy.

I should probably point out that Venom did have a comic book in the 90’s called Lethal Protector which I did not mention above because I was in heated ranting mode. In that comic Venom was an anti-hero, but I didn’t really get into it, because even in the comics I never wanted to see Venom as a good guy. It was after this storyline that Venom’s popularity began to fade. Ultimately Venom is a Villain. So there ya go.

Who in the hell came up with this idea!!
While they are at it make a new "Passion of the Christ II", whereJesus Christ rises from the dead and is a Super Zombie eating peoples Brains and souls.

    Utter ridiculousness

  2. Rkelly on October 8th, 09

    I'm still mad…

  3. guest one on October 8th, 09

ugh….read the spider man marvel handbook dipshits..venom (Eddie brock) didnt stay a bad guy, he dosnt consider himself one( he was wants depicted in the comics saving a baby) he just hates spider man. the eddie brock venom was an anti hero…besides they can always make carnage the bad guy which is accurate

  4. cclifton45 on October 8th, 09

best story would be venom vs carnage, but i dont see how you can really do a venom movie without spiderman

  5. guest two on October 8th, 09

his solo title was called Venom: Lethal Protector. Think Punisher without the guns and with a symbiote.

  6. Tired Canadian on October 8th, 09

Total agreement with guest one. The fact that Venkman didn't know this basic Venom information leads me to one conclusion, Venkman is a geek fraud !! I say its time for a new true geek Tyrant !! Let the regime change begin !!
Thanks and have a swell day.

  7. Kuroi_Inu on October 8th, 09

meh that was very short lived and dosen't seem to be enough to make an entire movie out of the few times he did good things. plus they already had him wanting to kill people in 3 so now hes ready to turn over a new leaf? also were is spiderman in the mix, is he in this movie are him and venom gonna hold hands while they save that baby?

  8. DrVenkman on October 8th, 09

I'm sorry I didn't give a full Venom history lesson. He is known as being a villain more than he is known for his kindness.Venom and Spider-Man were enemy's. He would do anything to get revenge, that included killing people. I know there was a time Venom finally had a truce with Spider-Man… after several YEARS of killing and that was only after he was knocked out unconscious. Then he ended working with the government for a short time, then he went back to hating Spider-Man, but that was a brief storyline. The average people in the world know him as a villain, and I wanted to see a villainous Venom movie, which is what my rant was all about. OK bye.

  9. Daveym on October 8th, 09

    Makes sense to me =)

  10. edgar on October 9th, 09

    god dammit!

  11. aboynamedart on October 9th, 09

Talk about a missed opportunity by Marvel – they could've adapted the Mac Gargan Venom story and made some inroads into the horror genre. THAT sumbitch is sick.

  12. Tony on October 9th, 09

Get over it, I have always seen him as an anti-hero to be honest. Carnage was always the bad guy symbiote to me. This might be because Maximum Carnage on the SNES was my favorite game as a kid.

  13. Jon on October 9th, 09

Eddie Brock is a pussy. He became Anti-Venom, which I wouldn't be surprised if that is what this is about.

  14. FAIL FAIL FAIL on October 9th, 09

GeekTyrant, you guys need to actually be geeks and read some comic books. This isn't a change or reinvention of Venom's character. Venom was known for viewing himself as a protector of the innocent, and his quest to destroy Spider-Man was always, to his mind, a quest for revenge for having been wronged (Brock having his career destroyed, the symbiote for being rejected).
Not to mention, as the above have stated, the Maximum Carnage storyline, where Venom helps Spider-man, AS BEFORE, to chase down Carnage. Or all the times in the stories where Venom made a point of "protecting innocents" from collateral damage in fights with Spider-Man. Or the Venom miniseries. Seriously, guys, do your homework before you blog something stupid like this– it really hurts your credibility.
    FAIL GeekTyrant. HARD FAIL.

  15. Sage on October 9th, 09

Venom does become a defender of the innocent if you read his solo comic.
He even teams up with the Punisher to fight a gang.

  16. FAIL on October 9th, 09

That's a very incomplete definition of Venom, and misses out completely on the important aspects of his character. Venom's just another villain and nothing special (or movie-worthy) without the elements of what makes him such a memorable character. He's a dark shadow of Spider-man. He only kills those who he deems deserving of death, while pursuing Spider-Man– even to the point of saving children from the damage caused by his own fights. He didn't view himself as a villain– he viewed himself as a wronged party, seeking vengeance.
You really must not read comics much, or you missed the point entirely. You should be embarassed at this post. fail, dude.

  17. FAIL FAIL on October 9th, 09

You didn't read the books, if you actually believe what you just said. He ALWAYS considered himself a protector of the innocent, at least while in pursuit of his goals. FAIL.

  18. @wereviking on October 9th, 09

That Jesus reboot could be just what the church needs right now! I like it!

  19. @flatlandcometh on October 9th, 09

  21. @Decepticonz on October 9th, 09

Wow, never thought I'd see the day when Geektyrrant didn't know what they were talking about

  22. Sean Hunter on October 9th, 09

Well all that shit aside they need to toss Topher Grace and pick a new actor to play venom.

  23. taylor on October 9th, 09

i'm really glad they decide to tell us these plot details so early on.
this way, i can just decide waaaay in advance that i don't want to see this crap movie.

  24. iamvenom on October 8th, 09

who gives a fucken shit you nerds about the special and sentimental things about venom, who cares if he does charity work in story lines, he is a bad guy at heart, he kills, even though sometimes he doesnt want to kill he does because he loses his control to the symbiote, im sure there's some point where he learns to control the symbiote but that alien is evil it feeds off hate and anger. venom is bad i dont want him to be some robin hood motherfucker in a movie if i want that i'll read that shitty comic. thats right i said it!! ha

  25. mary_jane on October 8th, 09

the words I am looking for are:
    LAME

    EPIC FAIL

  26. iamvenom on October 8th, 09

that comment was directed at the people saying well if you didnt know theres a story where he is good blah blah i dont want to see that in a movie for a pretty evil character he may not be the evilest but he is.

  27. @eskimo_pye on October 9th, 09

Venom is a ‘Good Guy’. He’s always thought of himself as a defender of the innocent. However he doesn’t consider Spiderman to be good. Don’t forget that Spiderman and Venom called a truce after they teamed up to fight Carnage.

One of my favorite Venom comics was a Christmas edition where he dressed up as Santa to try find out who was mugging all the neighborhood Santas. It was oddly funny (and what makes the character of Venom cool)

  28. Mac on October 9th, 09

Just for the record, I love this picture.

  29. Rkelly on October 9th, 09

I'm with the writer off the article on this one…Venon should be bad, and if all the naysayers who responded and spoke bad about the writer of the article are so insistent about comic book accuracy …then why all the hoopl about Topher Grace? He was a good guy – hated Peter Parker and nuff said. topher Grace didnt make Venon a Punk in that movie…Venom was a Punk then .

  30. cclifton45 on October 9th, 09

10 bucks says Eddie Brock wins a Nobel Peace Prize

  31. DrVenkman on October 9th, 09

Well Hello Mr FAIL FAIL FAIL, Wont give a real name huh? Thats cool. Were you on the debate team in high school and want to live out your glory days? The here's my rebuttal… You say, "Venom was known for viewing himself as a protector of the innocent." Did you know that most Villains in comic books and real life view themselves in the same light? Two perfect examples of this are MAGNETO and HITLER, they saw themselves as people wanting to do some good in the world. They had their reasons for their villainous actions as well, when in reality what they were doing was pretty evil and wrong. They are Villains just like Venom is a villain. So go do some research on the psychology of villains before you come on my blog and try to show me up. Epic Fail, FAIL FAIL FAIL. I guess you were just setting yourself up with the name you chose.

  32. Vulcan2422 on October 9th, 09

I gotta say….to the people defending Venom as a Defender of the Innocent…..GOOD FOR YOU! You guys are right on the money. I'm really wondering what the hell Venkman is at this point, I think he is a jock and not a geek!

  33. DrVenkman on October 9th, 09

Is there something wrong with wanting to see a Venom movie where Venom is a bad guy? That's the movie I was looking forward too. If you want to see Venom saving lives that's cool, I have no problem with that. It's just not the road I wanted to see the movie go down. As a blogger I understand I can't please everyone. Thanks for sharing your thoughts though!

  34. mudd86 on October 9th, 09

No, but he was not a happy lets do good deeds type guy.

  35. hib34 on October 10th, 09

Hey, canuck! Its ok to be a geek and not know everything, the fact is is that Mr Venkman brings us good info, no one is perfect!

  36. guy5 on October 10th, 09

oh really, well guess what it depends on what church your talking about, if its the catholic church then that makes sense.
