WORLD WAR Z Author Impressed with the Movie Script

worldwarzconceptart

As you probably know by now, Max Brook’s incredibly awesome novel, World War Z, is being adapted into a film. James Bond: Quantum of Solace director, Marc Foster, is attached to direct, and Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski was brought in to write the script, then the screenwriter of The Kingdom, Michael Carnahan was brought in to do a little re-write. The first draft of the script that was written by Straczynski apparently was really good, so good in fact that it impressed Brooks a lot.

I read Straczynski’s first draft, and it was f—ing brilliant. As the book writer I know that’s sacrilege to say, but it really was good. I turned to my wife and said ‘Honey, this is as good as the book. This is gonna be an amazing movie.

If the author approves then I think we can all get really excited for this movie to get made! So why are they doing rewrites? That’s just how Hollywood work, there are going to be more than on draft written, things are cleaned up and trimmed.

You know… the studio comes in and gives their notes and Forster came in and gave his notes. Carnahan was brought in for reasons unbeknownst to me. Maybe he’s doing a polish, maybe he’s doing a top-down rewrite. I know that his draft is supposed to come in in the next few weeks.

So in the next few weeks we will see what is really going down with the script and if it’s just as awesome as Max Brooks say’s the first draft was. I’m just happy to hear that the movie is progressing, and that the author of the book loves what he has read so far. I’m excited to see World War Z brought to life and it sounds like it is going to get done right. Share your thoughts in the rant back section below.

Pfff, Marc Foster ruined Quantum. So I don't care how good the script is if Foster delivers a movie as crap as QOS.

I read the Straczynski draft a couple years ago and "as good as the book" didn't necessarily come to mind. It did a great job of inhabiting the world that Brooks created in the Survival Guide and WWZ, and the investigator as protagonist was a great (and likely necessary) plot device. my recollection is that the movie would suffer from too few wartime flashbacks to be as entertaining as the book was.

Glad to see this project still has some life in it. I was seething with rage after seeing Zombieland. Just a single zombie in the second act? Ripping off the Survival Guide's "rules" conceit only to disregard common sense at every turn? Twinkies?

The government should subsidize the production of WWZ in order to save the millions of American lives put at risk by Zombieland's frivolity in the face of the zombie menace.
