'Oldboy' to get the remake treatment by Spielberg and Smith

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are starting to talk about remaking the Chan Wookpark's Korean film 'Oldboy'. Dreamworks is currently in the process of securing the remake rights, the film will be distributed by Universal.

I don't know if you have seen the original version buy it was jacked up man. You would think these two power house guys could come up with something other than a remake, but whatever. If you have not seen the original then rent it and watch it, it's pretty freaking awesome.

Variety reports:

In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.

Spielberg had been looking for an opportunity to make a film with Smith, who would play the kidnapped man if all the pieces fall into place. Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process.

I think Smith would do a good job as the lead in this movie if he looses himself in the role like he has never lost himself before. If Spielberg is on to Direct it then I am in. This is a pretty twisted and dark story, it will be interesting to see what these guys do with it. At the same time I hate when Hollywood remakes these amazing foreign films, but Spielberg is doing it! I'm so torn. Why are they doing this! I hope to hell they do not tone this down for an American audience. The audience has to leave the theater trembling. If they do not then Spielberg has failed.

Below is the trailer for the Original Film.
