Remake Alert: 'Childs Play'
Venkman here - Yes its true, I'm not even joking. Honestly though I was never really into the 'Childs Play' movies in the first place. The first one was the best out of all of them, but I don't understand why anyone would want to remake it? Especially the guys that created it! What the draw? Don't they have any new ideas? I can understand why someone would want to remake 'Poltergeist', because it was a damn good film. But I don't see it with Childs Play. AICN recently interviewed 'Childs Play' creator Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner. Here is the crap that came out of their mouths:
"I think what we are mainly responding to, David and I, is the will of the fans, which is really telling us that they want to see a scary Chucky movie again. They want to go back to the straight forward horror rather than the horror comedy," Mancini said.
Really? The fans are asking for this? If you are a fan I need to know if you are asking for this or if they are wishing the fans were asking for it. Mancini also says that they are going to use the orignal voice of Chucky, done by Brad Dourif.
"It's not like we would ever... who would you get that's better? I mean with Chucky so much of it... and David and I talk about this a lot, that because he's a puppet, there's an aspect of him that feels like he's an animated character, so his voice is such an immense part of it as well as what he looks like. It's almost like recasting Homer Simpson or something. If you could recast it, you would want the actor to sound kind of like it, but it would feel weird to just be completely different I think."
Oh! I'm sure there are tons of voice over artists in the world that could pull off the voice of Chucky, but thats just my opinion. And lets face it Chucky is no Homer Simpson. Kirschner also had to reiterate one of Mancini's remarks about the film being a reboot that is, "telling the origin story again."
"Yeah. I'm not even sure if I would say reinvention," Mancini said. "I think Don has really created some really clever twists and expectations that a fan of the first "Child's Play" film, you will be surprised and shocked by, but it will follow I think very closely a lot of the first film against twists and turns that Don has put into it that an audience thinks it is going to go one way and we will go another even though the story is pretty similar.
Wow. They are going to put some twists in the film! The fans are going to be so surprised! So they are going to go back and do a whole new origin story, but with new twists and turns so that people will think it is going to go one way when all of a sudden uh, oh! They tricked you! You see what they did there? They took your intelligence level and flushed it down the toilet.
They are still finishing up their deals with Universal for the movie, and that if it all goes through it will be in theaters by 2010.
Oh, lets hope not.
