GHOST IN THE SHELL Live-Action Movie Gets a Screenwriter
Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to the Japanese manga property, Ghost in the Shell last year, but there hasn't been much movement on the project since we heard it was going to be adapted into a live-action film. Oh yeah! By the way, it will be in 3D.
DreamWorks has recently brought in a new writer to get started on the script, so the project is moving forward. Laeta Kalogridis will take on the challenge of adapting the insanely popular manga property for the film. Kalogridis recently wrote and executive produced Martin Scorsese's upcoming film Shutter Island, so it looks like it got itself a a great screenwriter.
Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment are attached to produce and originally brought the project to DreamWorks. The fact that Avi Arad is attached to this project, scares me. He has some crazy ideas about things, and his movies have been hit and miss.
Created by Masamune Shirow, Ghost in the Shell was first published in 1989. It went on to generate two more manga editions, three anime film adaptations and an anime TV series. The second anime film, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, was released in the U.S. by DreamWorks in 2004.
I'm excited to see how this translates into live action, at the same time I'm scared it's not going to live up to the manga. I just hope they bring in a great director! What do you all think?
