J.J. Abrams Not Directing MISSION IMPOSSIBLE IV

So it looks like J.J. Abrams is not going to jump in the director's chair for Mission: Impossible IV. Are you still interested in seeing the movie? My interest level has dropped. His name is a big selling point for lots of movie geeks. I really enjoyed M:I III. It wasn't as good as the first one, but it was way better than M:I II. Abrams still plans on being a producer, but most producers aren't that hands on. Here is what he recently told MTV,

I'm producing with Tom. My guess is, given other things, that I will not be directing the movie.

I'm sure he's got a few other things on his plate that he wants to eat up, like Star Trek 2, and hopefully he will finally get to work on Steven King's Dark Tower series! As for Tom Cruise, he is only attached as a producer as of right now. There are rumors floating around that he might be replaced by a new younger actor. To this rumor Abrams says,

I don't want to give anything away yet, but I will say that it's a story that will feel consistent with the world that has been created. It's not a reboot kind of thing.

I just can't see Cruise not wanting to do it. Ethan Hunt is his thing. As far as where the production is at, there is a solid idea that everybody loves, and the script is being written by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec. Abrams and Cruise have been looking to work together again, and now here they are prepping up for M:I IV.

Tom asked if I'd be interested in working with him again. I didn't have a sense of what the story would be, but very quickly this idea came to mind, and Tom reacted to it in a way that got me excited, and then we got André and Josh to come on board, and they began developing the idea with us. The story was just so damn cool, and we got so excited about it.

But not cool enough for Abrams to want to direct it though. I hope it's good! Mission: Impossible has been a pretty solid franchise, but does the audience want to see another one? I guess we'll find out when the movie comes out and the box office numbers come rolling in. Chances are, it's going to be a hit, just like the first three. But who knows, maybe they will get a great director to take his place. Neill Blomkamp anyone? Everyone seems to want him to direct their movies these days.
